Lowest ice cover ever at both poles[W:284]

Fake News. The Earth is flat: it doesn't have any poles!

Thats good. It should make it much easier to get at the oil underneath now

I specifically remember reading a few years ago that some shipping companies are excited about the possibility of easier navigation of the Arctic, which suggests that they may have financial incentives to increase global warming. Don't tell the owner of Mar-A-Lago that...

Wow ! The things you guys come up with

There should be a protest.

A day without cows farting.

Wow. Even the Daily Mail is talking about this.

That's gotta be one of the signs of the apocalypse in itself  They even mentioned that we've had three consecutive record hot years. Must've been slipped through on the editor's sick day or something.

Remember when the deniers around here posted endless threads about the record ice in the Antarctic a few years ago?

Well as the article notes, two years of decline however large haven't made a new trend in the Antarctic, yet. But I certainly remember all the headlines and posts in 2013 about the "growth" of Arctic ice... because the previous year had been the record low.

Maybe not fake news but fake fear mongering at the very least

The earths climate is not static and never has been

It's actually a pretty impressive record-breaker for the Antarctic, even considering the El Nino. We've had plenty of them before, after all. The two previous record lows were set in 1993 following a fairly strong El Nino year (2.281 million square kilometers on February 19th) and even lower in 1997 weirdly following a year with slightly negative ENSO conditions (February 27th, 2.264). The big El Ninos which made 1998 and 2010 so hot did not correspond to unusually low Antarctic summer ice extents (~2.77 and 2.84 respectively), so it may be that ENSO itself doesn't affect it all that much. But in any case, in both years and in all years before this one, there were only those two days in which the recorded extent was lower than 2.29.

In 2017 however there was a solid stretch of 25 days (Feb. 12th to March 8th) where the extent was 2.27 m sq km or lower (beating the previous second-lowest record) and 18 straight days in which the extent was more than 40,000 square kilometers lower than the previous record (Feb. 18th to March 7th, all less than 2.223). The absolute lowest day in that period (March 1st, 2.075) was about 189,000 square kilometers beneath the 1997 record, or 8.3% lower.

I suspect about this time next year we will be treated to JH spamming lots of blog posts about the dramatic increase in worldwide sea ice.

Its all pretty academic one way or the other given we have only been able to observe such fluctuations since 1979

A friend and former colleague is doing work in Russia right now about the permafrost, which has begun to melt more drastically in the past three years. The greenland and polar ice sheet diminishment are well known, but not enough attention is being brought to the permafrost. If the permafrost melts even by 25% we are totally screwed because of the levels of methane that will be released.

The Arctic has had many warmer phases than today over just the last 4000 years and we are still here so I'm pretty sure we will be just fine

I'm sure it will be a great benefit to them but where does it say shipping companies are actively pursuing financial policies that will melt ice then ?

My, you read fast!

How could I possibly do that ?

That's a question that is usually answered by about the 8th grade. So try hard, try very hard.
