So...
What is your take on my insistence that words have meaning, and need be properly applied in science related topics?
I can only speak from my experience. I've found it helpful when talking with people in my own field, as we understand each other implicitly. I find it counterproductive when communicating with those outside my field who don't share my field's vocabulary. Instead of using more commonly understood language to make our arguments, many I've dealt with always talk as if to experts and rely too much on the knowledge that other people do not have. I do the same on occasion. It's a problem of different audiences.
Also, I do not believe that language is a fixed entity. The only time a language has completely set definitions is when it is dead. To hold such a belief one must overlook the diverse ways in which we abuse literal language. We have so many idioms and colloquialisms in English it makes literal definitions of meaning nearly impossible to assume. Precise definition of terms is used to aid in clear communication of thought, but it is never a substitute for effort in communicating with and understanding another person.
