Obama needs to shut this down

TVA: First new US nuclear reactor in 20 years goes live - CNN.com

Leave it to a red state to go in the complete wrong direction when it comes to energy. I hope that Obama can shut this thing down. They will get everything coming to them if a tsunami hits Tennessee.

If a tsunami hits Tennessee? The landlocked state of Tennessee?

I'd be much more worried about a massive tsunami big enough to engulf landlocked states, rather than a nuclear reactor meltdown.

If we are hit by a tsunami large enough to reach Tennessee, a landlocked state, we have bigger problems than a nuclear reactor breach.

We'd have The Day After Tommorow-esque problems.

It's in the middle of Tennessee. People need to stop freaking out about nuclear power plants thinking it is going to be Chernobyl. And before you even ask, yes, I would support having one near my home.

If a tsunami hits Tennessee, a reactor melt down will be the least of everyone's worries.

That is a lot of cross-posting. :)

I know you're only trolling here but I think it worth pointing out the irony of worrying about the potential disaster of nuclear radiation from the reactor when the only force strong enough to cause a tsunami large enough to make it all the way to Tennessee would be a giant asteroid impact which would end life on earth, anyway.

What you haven't seen the "documentaries" of "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon"? ;)

What make you think Fission Nuclear power is the wrong direction?

Fukushima anyone?

And it may not have to be a tsunami. Could be an earthquake or a terrorist attack or a flood. Why do people have to latch on to minutiae and miss the main point?

Nuclear is the only energy source that's reliable enough to follow the power demand curve and doesn't emit carbon dioxide. If you don't support nuclear you're not serious about global warming.

I've stood on the roof of my house in winter time. I can see the steam rising from the Salem Nuclear power plant that sits right on the Delaware River.

So I kinda do have one in my back yard.

No worries here.

There are risks with everything we do, we do the best we can to mitigate those risks.
Without fossil fuels, Nuclear is the only functional technology that is capable of meeting our energy requirements.
What is your main point that Nuclear power is bad, without any qualifications?
If you would like to have a real technical discussion about the risks vs the benefits of nuclear power, we can,
but starting from, you know all nuclear power is EVIL, because that is what you feel, is not a viable argument.

Nuclear power is cheap and sustainable.

If I had my way I'd build thousands of nuclear power plants.

Read up on the construction and operation of Nuclear Power plants and then get back with us. Most nuclear power plants are more sturdy and secure than most military facilities.

Tiny ones in every backyard. Like the outhouses of old.
I have always thought of the mid size, something that would fit on a rail car.
with the primary and secondary heat loops and control system.
Special cradles could be designed at coal plants (which all have rail access already) to make steam for existing plants.
