The problem with the school system is not the teacher nor the system... it is letting the kids get away with stuff while the administration does little to nothing about it.

Isn’t it “not or” not “not nor?”

Should have been, "nor is it the system"... but I was typing fast. I apologize.

Damn, that's some heavy stuff. My heart goes out to these teachers that have to put up with this Bullsh*t. This crosses all political boundaries. I don't know specifically what the answer might be but something has to be done. This can-not-continue or one day soon we'll hear about a teacher that goes completely berserk and does the unthinkable.
I know one damn thing. There's more than just this poster (on this board) that would turn down a job offer to teach. Not because of the work but afraid of what we might do. Even calm, easy-going people can be pushed far enough to finally think "F*ck this Sh*t..it's payback time." I certainly don't want to go to that place...

More like either/or and neither/nor. The school's problem is not treating criminal acts as crimes to be referred to and handled by the criminal justice system, but rather as "violent behavior problems" to be accepted as normal and handled within the "special needs" public school environment.

The teacher made no mention as to the percentage of violent offenders within the total "student" population. I would be willing to bet that removal (to juvenile detention facilities) of that violent minority under a truly zero tolerance policy would show immediate improvements. That, of course, is more expensive and would likely result in cries of racism (disparate impact?) - best to just let all continue to suffer to save money and prevent race riots.

Sad. Maybe New Zealand should ban that like they do other things. You know, for the children.

Chill, I was just referencing English 101. I never was quite sure....neither/or...neither/nor....either/or.....aside what’s with the “i before e except after c rule here?

That's weird rule, with some exceptions. ;)

Teachers that get fed up just leave before that point...

That would have made no more sense. The problem with the (school) system is not the system - still makes no sense.

I was saying that the sentence should have read:

"The problem with the school system is not the teacher nor is it the system"

...and yes, that does make sense.

Nope, you simply can't have the problem with the system not being the system. That is like saying that the system is fine but the system has problems.

Ban what?

Your complaint about "letting the kids get away with stuff while the administration does little to nothing". New Zealand is a little country with the population of Alabama (under 5M), but twice the size of Alabama and without all of the limits of government as the US Constitution. Certainly they can do more to impose their will upon their own schools.

The biggest problem is the parents or lack of parents at home. But we can't blame them or the kids, we have to throw off responsibility to the teachers.

Isn’t it “not or” not “not nor?”

In the case above, not or. Not nor only works as separate statements.

It is not the bad apples or the oranges.

Engineer's English lesson for the day :)

Maybe New Zealand should pass a law requiring the licensing of parents and limit that license to one kid per family unless they can prove financially and educationally to be able to handle a second.

My point was that there is no problem with the system... but that also brings up another point, the "System" is referred to as the over all Education System but it can and does also refer to the method of teaching in a district, a school and a classroom. The term has many meanings depending on context and in all of the meanings my usage was and remains correct.

I was referring to education in Western Countries... not just here or the USA, in which I have taught in both.

Bingo!

In American public schools that want federal aid (and what district does not want it?), it is illegal to suspend students for defiance. This decision was made by the former administration because activists said that two certain groups were being singled out for punishment.

Public school teachers nowadays are powerless, and the students know it. They may not know grammar or math or history, but they DO know their "rights."

*****

I was horrified to read today that some middle school and high school students in Baltimore booed the First Lady of our country when she walked on the stage to speak about opioids. No doubt they acted in such a disgusting manner partly because at school they are already out of control. They see "adults" saying the most vulgar things about the First Lady, so they feel it's fine to join in. Many Dems should be ashamed of the "example" that they have set -- but they are not.

P.S. Please, if one of your loved ones is thinking of becoming a public school teacher, advise him/her against such a decision.

The teachers and the students are two components of the greater system, so if the students are the problem than so is the system. Education is going down-hill in America because it is in the interests of powerful nexes of capital and influence to keep most peoples' children limited in their capacity and thus dependent of a much wider system - the political-economy. Truly well-educated children will grow up to be informed and proactive adult citizens who will be more likely to not allow their democracy to be hijacked by oligarchy and Tweedism unless the children are already part of the oligarchy. Therefore limiting the effective education of most students is in the interests of the business and political oligarchs who are enclosing democracy and managing it into ineffective passivity.

Thus the role of the lawyers, the politicians, the special interests and many of the educational administrators in keeping the system broken. Revolution begins in the classroom or around the family table - anywhere where learning and thinking occur. An under-educated populace is generally easier to,manage if there are more broken homes and more broken schools. So poison the schools and proactively destroy the Socrates who may one day rock the ship of state.

Cynical but regrettably true.

Cheers?

As someone who has been in education this is by no means indicative of all schools or even most schools (and believe me there is plenty wrong with public education). Also keep in mind this as far as I could tell was a school for "at risk" student population. Those are kids with many serious problems.
