How would you answer this survey?

How do American not know a lot of things? Sometimes, I stand amazed at the things the public does not know.

Remember Jay Leno's "Jaywalking" segment? :3oops:

Dumbing down of our public school system. I know from helping my daughter and grand kids who have gone to college, that during their first two years of college they are learning things I did back in High School during the day. Subjects like Math, Science, English, History, even social studies. Today, instead of teaching up to the brightest student, our public schools are teaching down to the lowest.

When the states had full control of the school systems the United States were number one in the world in Math and the sciences. Nowadays, we're like 28th and 32nd. It has become more important to have a high number, percentage who graduate whether than teaching the kids or have them learn.

All my life and to this day, the people I've known who are older than I, even those and who completed no more than 8th grade, have been more competent readers and writers and more able to do basic math. You wouldn't even believe how poorly too many young Ph.D.s and other professionals write these days. But here is a sobering fact: Over $3 billion is spent by employers annually on remedial writing: Study: Poor Writing Skills Are Costing Businesses Billions | Inc.com

Why do you care?

Are you asking me? And care about what?

Nope. 1st post. There was a discussion earlier about the benefits of having a common language available in general for communications sake. They then of course took it to an extremist perspective to illustrate some as of yet unknown point. It can be difficult to talk to talk some down from the ledge sometimes.

You have a good point about the self educated. I have at times worked among some highly educated professionals without a lick of sense between them.

Carry on.

I do! He once put up a picture of Joe Biden when Joe was the vice president, and people could not identify him. He asked one genius who we fought in the revolutionary war, and he answered, "China."

Downright scary the level of ignorance among the general population.

Exactly and as I state, even colleges are now teach high school English, Math, science etc. in their first two years. One used to expect a kid going to college to have already mastered those skills. Not so today.

The lack of preparedness academically is shocking. Too many students aren't able to do the work expected in college--they just don't have the foundation. This makes them very unhappy because what they have learned is that you "deserve" credit for "trying" and that if you fail, it's something or somebody else's fault.

Exactly, then when they leave college they are totally unprepared for the real world. Reality hits them in their face.

This is hilarious!

But making 'zero' a number was absolute freaking genius! Gotta' give it that!

You mean zero isn’t a number? What’s next? Pluto isn’t a planet?

Clearly, a majority of people want American numerals taught. Is it time to speak up about this encroachment of Arabic culture into our society? Do the Muslims already have too much influence? What's your opinion?

I have no problem with teaching other languages and cultures. I encourage it.

I think a single language comprised of the different languages and cultures is the best option for a country that is made up of hundreds of different cultures and languages. We already speak English containing lots of words from different languages. A single language has many advantages over multiple languages. Being able to direct or communicate with the people with a single language is much more efficient than having hundreds of different languages and utter chaos in an emergency.
