Of course I understand. If school children weren't taught Arabic numerals they would never learn how to write numbers because we've been using the Arabic numeral system since -- EVER. It's a complete lie to say "even the business community has had to adopt to them". IT'S ALL WE HAVE EVER HAD! There's no such thing as 'American numerals'. That's just a made up thing. Our numerical system has always been based on the Arabic numerical system. The thread is just silly and makes no sense at all.

It does contain a fact, but not what you're thinking. Why did so many people want schools not to teach Arabic numbers? Think about it.

Are we really that dumb? Well........I guess so. This certainly shows the failure of our public school system where feel good has replaced learning.
 
Look at the offerings in “prime time” in your TV Guide. Demographics at work! Cruise your nearest Walmart.....

More than once I've given instructions to paginate front-matter in lowercase Roman and text and back-matter in Arabic numerals only to be met with disbelief that knowledge of Arabic was expected--and have then, dumfounded, had to explain that these are the "1, 2, 3's" we use every day. Not kidding.

(And how is it that people know Roman numerals but not Arabic ones?!)

How would you like to learn these? Thai numbers 1-10. ๐, ๑, ๒, ๓, ๔, ๕, ๖, ๗เ, ๘, ๙, ๑๐. Hindu, Lao and Khmer have roughly the same symbols for the numbers 1-10. You'll see both Thai and Arabic numbers on their baht bills.

I don't think most Americans know our number system was from Arabic. Sure is a lot easier than the Roman numbers.

Dumbing down of our public school system. I know from helping my daughter and grand kids who have gone to college, that during their first two years of college they are learning things I did back in High School during the day. Subjects like Math, Science, English, History, even social studies. Today, instead of teaching up to the brightest student, our public schools are teaching down to the lowest.

When the states had full control of the school systems the United States were number one in the world in Math and the sciences. Nowadays, we're like 28th and 32nd. It has become more important to have a high number, percentage who graduate whether than teaching the kids or have them learn.
