Instead of having college students go into debt, we should go beyond what the other developed countries do. Which is make a college education free for those who want to go. But actually pay them to do so. For example, I have heard that there is a shortage of nurses in this country. Pay them a little more to be educated in that. Also, what do people expect college students to do. Do their studies and go to bed? If a college student needs a junker car to get around in, he should have the money to do so. Or if he wants to buy some decent cloths or take a girl out on a date, he should have the money to do so.

Another thing is that something most people know is that if you want to get more work out of somebody, the best way to do it is to treat them well. Paying them to go to college would certainly do that.

There are programs in other countries that may or may not work here. I have long believed that the first thing we should try to make our own program, based upon the German model. Every student can go to college. Every student can go to a trade school. They can get internships and get paid while they go to school. It is without a doubt, working in Germany. We have small versions of this here and there around the country. Mostly, privately funded. And almost every, last, one of them, works.

It makes more sense to pay them to stay home.Once they get out of college they are just educated idiots.

Yes let us make college education free for all. That has been the cry of Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders and now recently Ocasio-Cortez.

That may play well in deep blue districts but it isn't playing well nationally.

On the contrary there has been a push to recognize that not everyone needs a college education to have a fulfilling life economically. And that not everyone is cut out for college. The focus has been on restoring trade education to fulfill the needed jobs in the 21st century.

As I understand it, that is not, exactly, how it works in Germany. You get split up in 5th Grade and basically spend what we would consider Middle-High school on a "track" determined for you. If you are on the Academic Track (~30% of students), then you can go to college.

IIRC a smaller percentage of German students go to college than American students, and the Germans don't get paid so much as they have free tuition.

As far as the OP, though, what if I told you......

you CAN get paid to go to college in America? ;)

Certainly if we are going to talk about spending $100,000+ per citizen who wants to go to a FAILED UNIVERSITY maybe to party and soak up the atmosphere then I need to talk about what I as a taxpayer get for my money, and what other uses for that money we have so that I can make sure that we are spending wisely.

Seriously...before we spend that kind of money on people I just might need to see some skin in the game...

So to speak....

How do you want to pay for this? Why limit it to ones wanting to go to school. How about you pay those back who have already finished college or trade school and are now in the workforce. Better yet, how about including those who went to college or trade school and are now retired. Bet they would like a bump in retirement income.

Many of my generation were able to get through college or trade schools debt free or manageable amount of debt. What do you expect, go to college and just party? Young people need to get off their collective butts and get to work. Quit expecting all these free handout. I suspect this is a troll thread.

Many are able to get through a University in good standing learning pretty close to nothing of value...that is more my problem with the idea....

We are going to reward Universities with yet more gobs of money to follow all of the other gobs of money when they provide so little value?

MAYBE NOT!

How about:

1. Get good grades, score well on the ACT, Do volunteer work during the summer and then apply for every scholarship possible. My parents didnt have the money to send me to college so I had to go this route, I had enough scholarships that I got back $2500 a semester.

2. Get a job. Most large businesses have college reimbursement programs, even Walmart (at least they did, unsure if they do now)

3. Join the military

There are plenty of ways to go to college at no monetary cost to the student, the problem is we have too many lazy people that simply want others to work for it rather than put any effort themselves.

The OP post seem to cover expenses not related to education.
"If a college student needs a junker car to get around in, he should have the money to do so. Or if he wants to buy some decent cloths or take a girl out on a date, he should have the money to do so."

Smells of the entitled mentality. I am with you that some go to college and get a degree that is worthless or next to impossible to get a job in that field.

Oh and you know how that resonates with our crap youth, I just had and former employee millennial over at the house for multiple hours, she talked about this at some length.

She also went on about how hard it is to find men who are worth a damn...Different subject I know....sort of....

100% agree that they should have the money to do so. Amazingly enough they can have that right now without needing any new laws. They can ask their parents for it, or they could...and forgive me for suggesting something so preposterous....they could get a job.

@icandoit

This is already the case in America. Apply for Pell Grants & State Grants, one can go to Community College for free and receive a check in the mail. Community College has 20+ programs that lead to jobs in the $40,000-$70,000 range.

I'm a Viet Nam era vet and I have benefited from some of those programs. They should be made stronger. That does not diminish the virtues of the german model. It works. And we are now trying it in Ga. A red state. Just because an idea comes from somewhere else doesn't make it bad.

I've heard of the lottery, and Hope Scholarships, etc., but not Georgia trying out the German model. Do you have a link?

Community college,aka trade school

If you are going to give me free college education and you are going to pay me to go to college too. I would have around twenty undergrads degrees.

Community college,aka trade school

@gulfman

Partially true. (A) Trades are very good (B) You can get training that most University graduates do not attain--for instance, Calc 1-3 + Diff. Eq., Classical Mechanics-Modern Physics, General Chemistry-Organic Chem 2, etc. etc.

To be honest--most people are not going to University to get "educated". They are in it to receive a participation trophy.

And the German system is not a very good construct for many who want liberty or those who are concerned about multi-generational poverty and minority status. This means there is a large cross-section between the Left and the Right that would more or less stand opposed to that system if it were to be proposed.

In America, if you want to get paid to go to university, that route for civilians is largely reserved for the small number who enter graduate school.

If that's the problem to be solved, seems a bit more direct to pay nurses more than to pay people to be nursing students.

Sorry for the slow reply.
I was listening to an interview with the Ga secretary of ed on GPB's political rewind. I'll see if I can find a link. Might be one on the state ed site. I was a bit surprised when I heard about it. But do remember that this benefits businesses and the trade school business, which is big here. It is not out of the goodness of anyone's heart.

If you gave me a free college education and you paid me to go to college, I would become a professional student and never would left.

Red:
The U.S. has already implemented that notion at the undergraduate level, and pretty much anyone who wants to receive the benefit can have it.
There also some private organizations that cover full tuition along with housing, meals and other costs.

At the graduate level, one may obtain fellowships, teaching assistantships, and other grants of assistance that include stipends. Some examples include:

And what exactly would the tax rate have to be on everyone else to fund this monstrosity?
