Thoughts on Structuring (IT) Similar to (PT)?

*(IT) = Intellectual Training
(PT) = Physical Training

The Main Idea:

Physical training (PT) is structured is separated into different parts--that is, (a) Strength (b) Speed/Jumping (c) Flexibility/Mobility (d) Endurance/Cardiovascular (e) Specific Skillsets. Overwhelmingly, training is organized into exercises, sets, and reps. Also, different method of structuring the session are employed, such as direct, circuit training, etc. This has overwhelmingly been shown to be extremely effective in building the body up rather than not having a plan, that is sensible and rooted in principles.

Now, what if a similar approach were utilized with Intellectual training? That is, (a) "Strength" [Complexity of argument followed and raw processing power given no time limit] (b) "Speed" [How quickly the mind accurately computes information] (c) "Endurance" [Increase your mental "fuel tank"] (d) "Mobility" [Ability to quickly jump from one mental task to another differing task] (e) Creativity (f) Specific Skillsets.

In practice, these are potential sample exercises for each could include (though, of course, not limited to): (a) Difficult Math, Physics, or Chemistry problems (b) Solving mild to easy Math-type problems quickly, getting through as many as possible in a given time constraint (c) (i) Read a long book like "Lord of the Rings" or "War and Peace", see how much you can get through in a sitting (ii) Do an exercise where the word and color mismatch in a column of words, and say the color or words in the list mentally/out-loud for as possible before getting exhausted, and keep pushing back that limit (d) Jump from one exercise to another (e) Artistic endeavor (f) Specific skillsets

Then, one could have (IT) "strength" training sessions, or "speed", "endurance", etc. or train all in one session with Circuit training techniques--which would most definitely trigger rapid neuroplastic adaptations.

Educators used to do this....back in the GOOD OLD DAYS when America had an education system rather than the indoctrination/career punch system we have now.

I agree with you. Actually, Phys. Ed has gotten pathetically poor today as well--when there used to be some real quasi-military standards if you wanted to pass gym class.

PT is good for the body, mind and soul. Meditation to walks in nature stimulate and relax the mind all of which are positive. Diet and throw in ways that trigger the Vagus nerve in a positive way.

Now if I could do all of that, it would be great. But we have Grandchildren and try to impart that information for them and their parents.

Do you have a local park that you like walking, etc. at. I am a regular at mine, when I get some free time. I train, read, walk, relax, etc. I definitely think it is good for the mind to get closer to "nature" on a regular/semi-regular basis.

Ya, instead of ruining their lunches with bad flavor and downsizing we should have instead re-instituted decent gym classes and quality recess time.

Almost no one ever talks about how we ruined PE.

I am mid-twenties--so I have plenty of time & energy for this stuff right now still.

Do you have a local park that you like walking, etc. at. I am a regular at mine, when I get some free time. I train, read, walk, relax, etc. I definitely think it is good for the mind to get closer to "nature" on a regular/semi-regular basis.

We live on the East Coast, Canada, Nova Scotia. We beach walk, look for sea glass, scenic drives, as we are about to tour areas, look for glass, relax and enjoy life. Myself I have back issues and when that acts up when looking for glass, I always have a book to read.
My wife is surprised that I can find sea glass while wearing sunglasses. I bring a small / extendable rake. An enjoyable pastime

They have changed Phys Ed to the point that 16 year olds who are morbidly obese will get an A--effortlessly. That is the antithesis to a true PT standard. The same "quality" control has infected the academic standards as well. You can now get through k-12 without ever reading a book or anything close to that standard.

Well when we live at peak Victim Culture and thus pointing out that someone is fat is considered abusive 'Fat Shaming" that is what you get....

On the other hand fat is such an evil that the politicians are on the project of criminalizing food that they dont like.

PS...2 of my 3 kids skipped HS classes very regularly...I used to get the schools computer calling me constantly....I ignored the calls.....HS is such a joke now that going to class is not required for anyone who is reasonably intelligent. College classes get skipped regularly now too....it is all an expensive joke.

OH God, young men are such a mess now....

But young women even though they have been prioritized over the males all of their lives are not great either, increasingly they are not happy and are harming themselves...this society is melting down.

This is a subject that I talk about often...me being a heretic and all.

Solid young ladies are now few and far between as well--a "Blue Moon" rarity, of sorts. This is the direct product of "outlawing" the title 'man' and 'women' as honorable. It is dark times, as far as I'm concerned--the state of real men, women, parents, community, country, etc. is all in grave peril at the moment.

Precisely the same pedagogy -- teach students how to gather information, analyze it and form sound/cogent conclusions and inferences (i.e., increasingly strong arguments if one wants to put it in that context) based on it; aka, critical thinking -- is used for "intellectual training."
  • Humanities --> That is why students are given content to read and required to write argumentative analyses about it.
  • Math --> Developing strong reasoning skill is the whole point of having students develop proofs. (The point damn sure isn't for them to prove something new, at least not prior to one's writing a dissertation.)
  • Sciences (natural and social) --> Something of a bridge of sorts between the highly structured thinking of math and the abstract thinking of humanities.

The focus with "intellectual training" is quality of "intellectualism" not the quantity of content one can in a given period consume. Quickly reading the printed word is a useful skill in much the same way touch typing is a useful skill, but neither are the point. The points of reading, at all, is observation, comprehension and retention.
