Will tenure save prof who bashed Barbara Bush?

Saying a prayer for her is fine but there are consequences for actions you take.
Because you had a rough life does not give you a pass for acting like a decent person.

She will have to face the ultimate judge. No doubt about it. Until then, she will have to look into the mirror. It is all good. Something else I don't doubt is the Bush family praying for her soul.

I don't like people who brag about tenure like that.

Today 1 million maga armed up and nation wide pedro abdul tyrone had a bad day. the purge comes this summer . Kids its going to be wild.

I don't like people who brag about tenure like that.

OTOH, she might just start something she can't stop...like legislation to remove tenure at universities. Who knows? If others feel threatened by what she is tempting...

Somebody always has to be an ass. An hour after the announcement was made of Barbara Bush's passing, a Fresno State prof just had to bash her on Twitter, calling her a racist who reared a war criminal and expressing delight at her death and the hope that the rest of her family would soon follow her. When folks protested, she gloated that she would never be fired because she has tenure. Fresno State may disagree. Here is its president's statement:

On behalf of Fresno State, I extend my deepest condolences tothe Bush family on the loss of our former First Lady, Barbara Bush. We sharethe deep concerns expressed by others over the personal comments made today byProfessor Randa Jarrar, a professor in the English Department at Fresno State. Her statements were made as a private citizen, not as a representative ofFresno State. Professor Jarrar's expressed personal views and commentary areobviously contrary to the core values of our University, which include respectand empathy for individuals with divergent points of view, and a sincerecommitment to mutual understanding and progress. Fresno State Responds After Professor Calls Barbara Bush 'Amazing Racist,' Says 'I Will Never Be Fired'

I heard that today, and as bad as it is, she did it on her own time and in no way used the university media. It was said that she can be fired, but if she has a union contract that protects for "free speech", she'll be okay. If not, they may fire her; which is bad for tenured positions.

A union for profs? Are you talking about the AAUP maybe?

Probably, but I think this Professor is doing a big disservice to tenure by making it look merely like a mechanism for a Professor to say “nana nana boo boo! :p

At least BB died reassured by the certain knowledge that Jeb will never be President.

And that none of her children will be pathetic kneeling subjects.

Could be; it depends on the school.

While it's true that adjunct faculty are trying to organize into unions, I'm not aware of any academic "union" except the AAUP, which will defend your academic freedom and etc.

Not a fan of firing her because of the things she said on Twitter. In general, I'm just not a big fan of comments outside of the workplace leading to firings in the work place, and I definitely don't get on board with attempts to boycott or pressure workplaces to fire people for that kind of stuff.

The one thing I do have a larger issue with, and would consider if I was her employer, is the fact she tweeted out a crisis-hotline for Arizona State University while fraudulently presenting it as her own number and inviting people to lodge their complaints at that number. A professor at on university helping to flood something like a crisis hotline at another university due to some kind of twitter beef is far beyond simply saying something offensive on twitter. It's a professional fraudulently presenting the number of a vital student resource at a peer university as her own in a fashion that could potentially flood it's system and put the students at that other school at risk. To me that is the greater offense and one, as her boss, I'd seriously consider all options to deal with.

Tenure will save her. like it saves all of these loony professors that is why they do the crap they do because they know that there is little that can be done about it.
aside from some gross violation of school policy or the law there is little that can be done besides students avoid her classes.

It's just incredibly immature, unprofessional behavior.

Yeah, I'm not up to date on university unions although I know they exist. As I say, it depends on whether or not the school is organized.

I live near Fresno ( about 20 miles north). I listened to the local radio talk show yesterday, Most callers ( if not all) were very upset about her comments. While she may not get fired due to tenure, The school may suffer financially as it depends on support from the local community. Sports attendance and donations may drop as this area ( the central valley ) is mainly a conservative community.

If that picture of her ( posted earlier in this thread ) is real, she better be ready to reap the results of her posting, nobody can be more cruel than someone setting behind a keyboard. She will be called names, ( I can think of a few ). Probably receive death threats, and all the comments that go along with saying something stupid ( or free speech as we like to call it).

She is free to post whatever she wants, but those that may not agree are also free to respond.
I doubt the school has the guts to try and fire her.

I'm not convinced we are dealing with the cream of the academic crop here.

What a hateful person. Even if she doesn't get fired, at least her reputation will be ruined.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there are enough people out there who think like she does to keep her classes full. Her reputation among decent people is in the crapper, but for a small, disturbed minority, she just made herself a hero.

Actually, she did not teach this semester from what I read,, They put her curriculum online ( per contractual requirements) Sounds to me like she is just collecting a paycheck.. ( and using it for a lot of food )

She may be on sabbatical. Nothing wrong with this so long as it's productive.

But Jarrar has been given a wee hint that her absence could be permanent. From "Fresno State Professor Who Bragged She Couldn't Be Fired Gets Reality Check":

During a press conference that was held to address professor Randa Jarrar's offensive tweets, CAO [Chief Academic Officer] Dr. Lynnette Zelezny said that tenured employees are not exempt from firing.

"The technical question you are asking me is: 'Does tenure mean that you technically cannot be fired?'" Zelezny said. "The answer to that is no." https://www.dailywire.com/news/2961...gn=dailywire.com&utm_term=68980&utm_content=1

And although she was scheduled to headline an event this Saturday, LitHop 2018, Jarrar has cancelled her appearance. Controversial Fresno State professor Jarrar to skip LitHop | The Fresno Bee

everyone is entitled to their views

everyone is entitled to voice their opinions

what everyone is NOT entitled to do is shed a bad light on their employer while doing so

i am a director in a large company...and i signed documents saying as much as i onboarded

i met with the owner/ceo/board...and we discussed what was and not allowable

things that i already knew were common sense...but it was gone over anyway

some employees have a "bigger" influence in social media, and if something were to hit, it would be a devastating to the company

she may have the ability to freely express her ideals....i hope the university also understands it has not only the ability but the responsibility to show the world how they see things also

If she pisses of the wrong people in her university, tenure will not help her.
There are clauses in a tenure contract, and university administrators have and will continue to use them
when necessary. Usually they do not fire an offending professor, but strip them of position, lab space, teaching assistance, ect.
They end up with the classes no one wants to teach, at hours no one wants.

Generally speaking, tenure doesn't mean one cannot be fired, that is true. To some extent, I think that's all that Zelezny was alluding too (not that the school was looking to fire Jarrar). A tenured professor can be fired for very specific reasons, but being tenured does make it harder to be fired.

For this case, I do not think she will end up being fired for her comments.

When said aloud, her name sounds like "Jar Jar". How appropriate for her to have a name similar-sounding to an obnoxious cultural icon.
