Biloxi Bans "To Kill a Mockingbird"

Good point. I was thinking of starting a thread about the term (SJW) and why it is considered a negative. Weren't people like John Brown, Susan B Anthony, MLK, Chavez, etc., social justice warriors? Anti-abortion or Tea Party activists can lay claim to the term as well. My so-called career involved me in the social justice field and I believe (or delude myself into believing) that I helped hundreds. What's the beef?

The beef is you're fighting white guilt.

Speak for your own school district. My kids both read way above their grade level and are both doing great in other subjects in school.

Actually I was speaking from my kids experience which is in this school district, I was very clear about that but somehow that MACK TRUCK got past you.

Come....you actually read it?

What percent of the class do you figure read most or all of it?

Around here not so many my kids tell me, people brag about never reading the books but passing the class, it is a thing that is admired.

Well, thanks for setting me straight on that. You realize the only designation you used was, "our". "Our" can mean anything, including the entire state, nation, or the world, but somehow that MACK TRUCK got past you.

I think I see now that you did not read the entire thread.

OK, I am ready to move on.

You totally misunderstand what social justice means. It's about damage to society through irresponsible or malevolent actions. Read the wiki or something.

It's about favoring one group over another due to perceived past, present, or future injustice. Irresponsible or malevolent has nothing to do with it.

Completely wrong. Educate yourself. No favoritism, just considering all the factors.

Got anymore manufactured outrage?

Truit literally wrote a single line just mentioning that people looking for films for strong minority characters wouldn't find them, while still praising the film in the same sentence.

You'd think from all the rage that comment introduced that the original article was "Nolan's Dunkirk is racist, sexist, and a cis white male production".

But it wasn't, the actual title was "Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk' examines WWII heroism up close".

Lower SAT's and grades for certain groups over other groups?

Contract set asides for certain groups?

Favoring one group over another when hiring? That is not favoritism?

Spare us the racist and false talking points. You have no idea how AA works, you're regurgitating racist blogs, Jimbo.

If you believe blacks are disproportionately poor and commit crimes because of race, that's on you. But if you think there might be other reasons, learn what social justice means.

Required in school does not mean that people actually do/did it we all know so who are you trying to fool.....

It's too bad you did not know your classmates better.

What a bizarre thing to take issue with. Sure, I'll admit that there were a number of assigned books that I got away with not reading, though To Kill a Mockingbird was one I actually did read. At the same time, plenty of classmates did the reading. Why would you assume you know her classmates better than her?

I said nothing of the sort.

I have every idea how AA works. One group gets into a college with 1400 SAT's The other group needs 1550.

Wrong. Got a citation?

"SJW" is a pejorative. Since someone brought up Wiki:

Social justice warrior" (commonly abbreviated SJW) is a pejorative term for an individual promoting socially progressive views,[1] including feminism,[1][2] civil rights,[1] multiculturalism,[1] and identity politics.[3] The accusation of being an SJW carries implications of pursuing personal validation rather than any deep-seated conviction,[4] and being engaged in disingenuous social justice arguments or activism to raise personal reputation, also known as virtue signalling.[5]

Pretty much any time "warrior" is attached to something it's almost always mockery along the same lines as calling someone a "keyboard commando". It's about talking (or typing) a lot while risking nothing. Actual activists, like MLK,who took real risks are not SJWs. If you use the term, it will pretty much never be assumed that you're talking about anyone on the right. We have Social Conservative Warriors and some of the best entertainment you can get is when SJWs and SCWs get into it and argue over whose more moral.

Okay, I lol'd.

I never made a claim on her classmates, I simply said that it is a shame that she did not know them well enough to know if they tended to do the reading assigned.

All of my kids knew what was happening around them, I would have been disturbed if they did not.

THEY WERE RAISED BETTER

Oh my God.

Just because I can't remember how many people in my class actually read that ****ing book, doesn't mean I'm somehow "oblivious" to what's going on around me. There were those who read the book, and there were those who didn't read the book. What else do you want from me?

Did people get by with not reading some of the assigned books? Of course people did. I didn't read some of the assigned books that were required, and I still passed. And plenty of other people did the same thing.

STOP BEING RIDICULOUS

Why didn't your parents do a better job of teaching you to know whether your classmates actually did the reading or not?

Bummer you missed out on having Hawkeye as your dad.

Yes, what a missed opportunity.

As I sit here in my dorm room, waiting for my clothes to get out of the washer, I can't help but think to myself, "Why couldn't I have had Hawkeye as a dad? Woe is me!"
