Biloxi Bans "To Kill a Mockingbird"

That was the one where Scout wanted a BB gun and all the adults kept telling her she'd shoot her eye out, right?

Oh yeah. And remember when Darth Vader came in at the end and saved the day? That was a great moment.

Yes, I read it. I had to read it. Hence the term, required reading.

I don't know. Obviously, there were some people that cheated off of other people on the chapter reports, as well as on the test. I didn't.

Okay.

Required in school does not mean that people actually do/did it we all know so who are you trying to fool.....

It's too bad you did not know your classmates better.

Okay.

I read it in AP English, or before, and twice as an adult. And someone wants to claim no one reads it? The audacity of ignorance.

I decided different, and I will decide for myself if you dont mind.

BE CIVIL

No one is stopping any one from reading the book, no one is limiting access to the book. There is no free speech issue, period. You don't get to make **** up.

No one reads it? Students brag about not reading? Not reading it is to be 'admired'.

This thread explains a lot.

Must be why American posters here often miss literary references. How's your math, or history? Same same?

No ****.

This was years ago. How the hell am I supposed to remember how many people cheated in that class?

You are not making much sense today, "required" has a definition that you cant make up your mind about so I think we are going to have to take a pass...

Because they did not have a book as part of a lesson plan in junior high school?

No, because they didn't read the ones that were there.

Did you read it in remedial summer English? Everyone in my class read it. I've met many people who've read it as adults.

Sucks for them. That was one of the books we were required to read at my HS.

I actually liked it.

Isn't it strange that things we once likes are now taboo? Why not use TKAM to start a discussion about rape and racial inequality?

Our schools really suck and yes you are correct especially with the young today. With anyone below 25 you should start from the assumption that they are completely ignorant of all lit references. Proceed at your own risk.

It will remain required reading in 99% of the country and Biloxi young uns will look like backwards hicks for not having done so.

All besides the point I point out.

Why do I get your attention?

I did not seek it.

I get it now. So little Ralphie killed the poor mockingbird with the BB gun?

You totally misunderstand what social justice means. It's about damage to society through irresponsible or malevolent actions. Read the wiki or something.

Good point. I was thinking of starting a thread about the term (SJW) and why it is considered a negative. Weren't people like John Brown, Susan B Anthony, MLK, Chavez, etc., social justice warriors? Anti-abortion or Tea Party activists can lay claim to the term as well. My so-called career involved me in the social justice field and I believe (or delude myself into believing) that I helped hundreds. What's the beef?

Not only was that some of the best authentic frontier gibberish, it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age.

Bill O'Reily wrote a book defining SJWs as marxist terrorists with a completely nutbag platform. That's all the education about social justice some people have. The term SJW is practically a bigot dog whistle.

Good idea. One could also read and discuss the Merchant of Venice or Othello for the same reasons.

Speak for your own school district. My kids both read way above their grade level and are both doing great in other subjects in school.
