Why does American industry find it necessary to hire people from overseas in technical and scientific jobs?

Does not this country graduate enough engineers and doctors to fill the void?

I think our whole education system from high school on up needs an overhaul.

Its cheaper to pay foreign engineers and scientists, just like foreign labor. Your American engineers and scientist will always try to find higher paying jobs, so the companies/organizations that offer less have to turn to foreigners.

To what end?

I don't want to high jack Glowpun's thread but a couple of things here. I think we need to get some trade education back into high school. My kids go/went to a pretty good high school but there isn't any shop classes anymore. I would like to see post high school go directly to junior college/community college/trade school and be covered by public education.

I'm sure we've had this topic covered at DP manay times but maybe we can do it again.

Too many American students are pursuing easier degrees like Women's Studies OF Ethnicities.

I remember back in the day when people were mocking Art History majors. At least with Art history you get an appreciation for art and learn a foreign language.

Because all we need to do for our kids is get their standardized test scores as high as possible, and they'll be prepared for any job they want.

That was a joke, by the way. But it's basically the policy that school systems have drifted towards nowadays. It's just made the disconnect between what employers need and what skills students learn bigger and bigger.

Two words, cheaper labor.
