I have seen a few openings for ese in my field. I am wondering if anyone has any experience and can let me know more on the issue of teaching students with disabilities? The particular district I'm looking at is poorer and is desperate. I have some experience with kids with developmental issues in a camp setting, but never an entire group.

Sure. What are you wondering?

Difficulty of the task primarily. I have a friend who went in and felt utterly defeated. I'm looking for work experience and I'm not scared of the difficulty. My main concern is what it will take to be successful. I understand that my support may be limited by parents and the administration. That's education. Is there anything I would not expect to deal with that I will be dealing with?

My first question is are you working within an inclusion setting, or separate classroom or both? Next question is are you working with moderate, severe, gifted or all the above? Last question is how much help do you think you will have with staff (Will you have aides). Do you know caseload yet?

Not a bit. I've been told to "apply for the job" by the resigning teacher basically. They are desperate.

I've worked in very good conditions where the job has been great, and one extremely poor where the job was impossible and very stressful. It basically depends on your caseload, staffing conditions, and expectations.

Make a list of questions you want to know the answer to. Ask for a tour of the school and maybe a day to observe.

Absolutely ask for a day to observe...

Desperation is not a good sign... if it is a good desirable job many people would be applying.
