Re: Liberal Intolerance on the Rise on Campus

Your anecdotal point was that only liberals shout people down. I offered a non-liberal person shouting me down (also anecdotally). That's all. And yeah, he is a psychotic racist.

My point made no such assertion at all... read it again for comprehension maybe?

Here's another one to add to the Liberal Loon file:

Students filed two separate bias reports at Framingham State as a result of another student in some way displaying the Confederate flag in the past month, the school’s chief diversity and inclusion officer Sean Huddleston said. Now, Huddleston said he’s considering a campus-wide forum about what the flag means to different people, to turn discord into education.

This month alone, the school saw two bias reports - complaints to the administration about something a student witnessed or experienced that made them feel discriminated against or otherwise uncomfortable - about students displaying the Confederate flag. The most recent came on Nov. 19, after a student reported seeing a Confederate flag sticker on another student’s laptop.

Oh my God! I'm traumatized! He had a CONFEDERATE BATTLE FLAG ON HIS LAPTOP! I need to file a bias report! :lamo

Re: Liberal Intolerance on the Rise on Campus

And you are in denial. We made the Vietnamese our enemy when we got involved in their civil war on the side of the French Imperialists. They did nothing to us or to any other sovereign nation that warranted enemy status. Their "crime" was that they wanted to unite their nation.

Ummmm..... Ho Chi Minh wasn't about unification at all. He was about total dominance of the people, and he had his minions kill many thousands of innocents before his party got real traction through fear and intimidation. The south wanted no part of him.

But regardless, it was a war that the USA should have avoided at all costs.

By the "South" you mean the French speaking Catholics that sided with French colonials that Ho was trying to vanquish. It was very much the same as our Revolution, we had our "Torys" who also wanted "no part" of our rebellion. But at least you got the important part right. We had o business getting involved in war for independence from colonial influence given our history.

It was a war against colonialism, the reason Ho Chi Minh was so widely supported was that he fought for the independence of Vietnam from foreign influence. Why the US got involved is is rather complex but I have no idea why it participated in Vietnam when the Belgians asked for their help in a similar conflict in the Congo and declined.

The situations in Vietnam and Congo were not at all alike.

The confederate battle flag is a sign of racism, hate, bigotry, and traitorous people. It's offensive on its face.

I find a lot of things offensive on their face, like the idea as a taxpayer of footing the bill for safe spaces, mentoring programs, counselors for kids with egos made of glass, and administrators with no balls. Time to forget about the microaggressions, grow up, and face life, kiddos.

Re: Liberal Intolerance on the Rise on Campus

Yep. Yawn, put on blinkers, avert one's gaze, pretend it's not happening. Or maybe put one's fingers into one's ears, chant la-la-la and run in circles. I think that student hatred of free speech - not only evident in the US - is an important development.
America is in a really bad place. This is the future of this country. Not only will the next generation not make as much as the previous but the next generation won't have as many rights as the previous.

Too many of the next generation are spoiled, poorly educated brats in thrall to Political Correctness and ill-conceived notions of 'socialism'.

Now there's hard evidence of liberal intolerance on campus. UCLA provides the evidence.

Liberal intolerance is on the rise on college campuses

Okay, maybe conservatives are right to freak out about illiberal lefty militancy on college campuses.
Today’s students are indeed both more left wing and more openly hostile to free speech than earlier generations of collegians.
Don’t believe me? There are hard data to prove it.
For 50 years, researchers have surveyed incoming college freshmen about everything from their majors to their worldviews. On Thursday, the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles released the latest iteration of this survey, which included 141,189 full-time, first-year students attending about 200 public and private baccalaureate institutions around the country.
According to the findings, the current crop of freshmen can lay claim to multiple superlatives. Among them: most willing to shut down speech they find offensive. . . .

I am a college student that just left home to attend college. I never had to support myself. I never paid a bill. I never voted. I never served in the military. I never served in government. I never had a budget to live by. Add these up and you will have reason to listen to my opinion. :(

Re: Liberal Intolerance on the Rise on Campus

In my own extensive experience and observation, lefties on campus are the most intolerant of all. They don't want dissident opinion; they want to silence it.

From your cited article:

And if I may step back one more level, having followed many of the incidents that Levy discusses, I really don’t think that the campus left is simply interested in creating neutral zones where students can recharge before going out to once again do battle in the classical liberal marketplace of ideas. There are at least elements of it that want to make the world a safe space for their ideas, one where opposing ideas are shunned and silenced.

...The classical liberal order is being attacked from both sides more vehemently than it has been in generations. And if you think, as I do, that the classical liberal ideals of free speech and agreeing to disagree are the only order that can possibly work in a society as pluralistic as ours, then while we need to have compassion for its discontents, we also need to be prepared to mount a strenuous defense. But you know how to use the spellchecker and write a coherent sentence, so I'm interested.

A Confession of Liberal Intolerance
Nicholas Kristof, New York Times

"WE progressives believe in diversity, and we want women, blacks, Latinos, gays and Muslims at the table — er, so long as they aren’t conservatives.

Universities are the bedrock of progressive values, but the one kind of diversity that universities disregard is ideological and religious. We’re fine with people who don’t look like us, as long as they think like us. . . . "
