US unemployment rises by 2.4m despite easing of coronavirus lockdowns | Business | The Guardian

Nearly 39m Americans have lost jobs in nine weeks

Rate of increase slows but joblessness still at 1930s levels

Another 2.4 million Americans filed for unemployment insurance last week even as states across the US began opening up for business again, betting that the coronavirus pandemic is now under control.

The latest figures from the Department of Labor mean close to 39 million Americans have lost their jobs in just nine weeks. The rate of weekly losses has slowed sharply from its peak of 6.6m at the start of April but remains at levels unseen since the 1930s Great Depression.

Wasn't Trump's big things jobs & the economy?

Wasn't Trump's big things jobs & the economy?

Yep. And Trump inherited both from Obama.

Thanks to the pandemic or we might have believed it.

Sure, putt a Trillion dollars on the credit card for the rich.

It'll produce stimulus, investing etc, but it won't keep up with the deficit and soon it will crash.

It is a rickety thing that will fall apart and break at any slight imbalance or bubble.

Already we have another lending bubble starting.

Sure, put it on the credit card, the wife'll be happy, the kids will have shoes and toys and I can take the boss out for dinner.

There's nothing wrong with letting people keep more of their money, but there is a problem with running up the debt, drying up the lending pool and extracting all the revenue from the economy.

When they say that a capitalist gives jobs, creates jobs, or something like that, I think of our male "I became a father." The degree of participation in the process is about the same...

What kind of question is that? The loss of jobs is due to the fact that across the nation, people deemed nonessential were forbidden from working. But since you are now suddenly concerned, you must be in the open-up-the-country-immediately camp, right?

Yep. And Trump inherited both from Obama.

And improved both. And once you liberals get out of the way and allow people to go back to work, he will improve both again.

Wasn't Trump's big things jobs & the economy?

Liberals once again exposing the fact that they're glad about the damage COVID has done/is doing because it reflects badly on Trump. If that wasn't the case you wouldn't have such a wildly dishonest take on the economy in this thread. No president would have a good economy right now.

The sinister dishonesty in the OP's comment is actually appalling.

Thanks Trump.

By the way, you can think what you like about soviet socialism, but one thing is certain - after such a pandemic, labor employment in the USSR would remain the same one hundred percent. The soviets had no such worries at all. Cut down, thrown out on the street at someone's whim? Are you crazy?

One of the reasons why it is very difficult to find a job after 40 is the understanding of the employer, that he can not squeeze all the juice out of such a person with a simple story about prospects and a beautiful future. People over 40 want to work and live with dignity now, not later.

Trump allowed the virus to spiral out-of-control, leading to a prolonged shutdown that simultaneously killed economic confidence.

I have a question: Do you support economic stimulus in the form of government transfer payments and expanded unemployment benefits?

Trump allowed the virus to spiral out-of-control,
Total hackish bull****.

I have a question: Do you support economic stimulus in the form of government transfer payments and expanded unemployment benefits?
Normally, no. But in this case since the economic hardship is a direct result of government action, the government should be on the hook for the problems it has caused.

Spoken like a commie who has never been an employer but instead spent his formative years reading Marx and Engels.

Not to anyone who operates on the basis of objectivity.

The Federal government, according to many, doesn't have the authority to shut down the economy.

But just so I get this straight... you are saying the federal government should run a $3 trillion + deficit (Keynesian style) to rescue the economy due to the decisions made by the states?

Do I have this correct?

Should the states be allowed to go bankrupt? If so, it will create even more economic despair if they are derived to go down this path.

All states are susceptible... It won't just be Illinois, New York, and California.

I dont support the shutdowns and I dont support the bailouts. But someone who has lost his job or lost his business due to insane, authoritarian government action should be compensated for their loss.

Outside of the GOP echo-chamber, it's largely accepted that Trump chose to make divisive comments, push quack remedies, absolved himself of leadership on a global stage (WHO fiasco), etc.... It got so bad they had to stop doing daily briefings. Furthermore, governors are polling far better when it comes to dealing with the virus.

But by all means... it's your lie, so tell it however you want.

You're contradicting yourself. In one sentence you don't support the fiscal policy response and in the very next one, you support the fiscal policy response. Cognitive dissonance has gotten the best of you.

None of that is evidence of your claim. The virus spread across the globe because that is what viruses do. There is no stopping it. What there is is lying about it which is what you are doing for political reasons.

NOt at all. I oppose the shutdowns and I oppose bailouts. But if the state forces you to close your business, and you suffer damages because of it, the state should compensate you for the damages their actions caused. Is that so tough for you to understand?
