Trump’s instinct that America needs to rebalance its trade relationship with Beijing — before China gets too big to compromise — is correct. And it took a human wrecking ball like Trump to get China’s attention. But now that we have it, both countries need to recognize just how pivotal this moment is.

As a result, all China’s subsidies, protectionism, cheating on trade rules, forced technology transfers and stealing of intellectual property since the 1970s became a much greater threat. If the U.S. and Europe allowed China to continue operating by the same formula that it had used to grow from poverty to compete for all the industries of the future, we’d be crazy. Trump is right about that.

Opinion | China Deserves Donald Trump - The New York Times

Thomas Friedman is 100% correct. The Chinese do not know how to handle Trump. The gravy train is over. His policies and tariffs are directly hurting China which is a good thing for the United States and the global world. This is like a game of Chess and Trump has always been 5 moves ahead of Xi. We must continue on this course of action to get a better trade deal!

This is an opinion piece, and Thomas Friedman is not an economist (unsure why you dragged this into the economics area of these forums.)

What so few are willing to admit, including Friedman, is Trump's policies are hurting China and the US. The decision Trump made with his "wrecking ball" approach to this was pick a different set of winners and losers in this fight with China. Tariffs are always inflationary and that puts pressure on consumers.

Ultimately the only way to a better trade deal with China is to appeal to the WTO to change China's status.

Obviously they would do nothing. If only it was that easy. Liberals are 100% naive. Trump is sticking to to them in hopes of getting them to agree to free trade. Do you understand now?
