Rob Parmentier has weathered some rough times in the boat building business, but the trade wars with China, Europe, Canada and Mexico have shaken him to the core.

“It’s been catastrophic,” said Parmentier, president and CEO of Marquis-Larson Boat Group, which builds Carver yachts in Pulaski, Wisconsin.

The first “hand grenade,” as Parmentier described it, was a 25 percent tariff the European Union placed this year on boats built in the U.S., along with scores of other products including Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Then there was a 10 percent tariff slapped on boats shipped to Canada, along with price increases up to 40 percent on boat building materials.

It’s sent a shock wave through U.S. boat manufacturers.

“We’ve had a lot of order cancellations. Canada and Europe have essentially stopped buying boats,” Parmentier said.

Don't forget that many of these tariffs were specifically designed to target Red parts of the country. And until President Trade Wars stops picking these unwinnable fights, this problem is only going to get worse for us.

The trade war with China is needed... We will have to take a hit...

They have had completely unethical trade practices with us for 20 years.

We need to find our business elsewhere. If you have a better idea than tariffs... please state them, but we DEFINITELY did not need to the status quo.

This is the first time in awhile i've seen leftists be shills for the international corporations.

This has nothing to do with China, this is lost business with Canada and the EU.

No... the OP did mention CHina...

Didn't they just complete a deal with Canada?

And the EU tariffs the crap out of us too... I think all trade deals need to be reworked.

Canada agrees to join U.S. and Mexico in new trade deal to replace NAFTA, say US and Canadian officials

WASHINGTON – Canada has agreed to join the United States and Mexico in a trade deal that will replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, U.S. and Canadian officials said Sunday night.

“Today, Canada and the United States reached an agreement, alongside Mexico, on a new, modernized trade agreement for the 21st century: the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)," U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said in a joint statement. "USMCA will give our workers, farmers, ranchers and businesses a high-standard trade agreement that will result in freer markets, fairer trade and robust economic growth in our region."

Nothing Trump could "win" with his ego-driven trade wars could make up for how much we're losing along the way.

But, thank you, Trump. Scott Walker has been hard to beat up here in Wisconsin. We have a chance this year because of the hand grenades you're throwing at us.

No

Canada and China have not completed a trade deal. There are low level talks about the potential of them but some issues like the scope of the deal have so far prevented much progress. Canada wants the deal to include clauses that include human rights, China wants the focus to remain on purely trade

We could and should just cut all trade with Canada. If we could be able to replace the lost oil from them from our own reserves, that would make me very happy.

In like one sentence, the actual main points are related to the EU and Canadian tariffs. How do you justify these other trade wars?

I think it has to do with the fact its a republican and not a democrat that's trying to trying to straighten out this trade mess.

Umm, those "trade deals" have not been sign or ratified by any of the governments involved. Just so ya know.

I guess Carver won't be hiring more people. Oh, well, catalyzing that to happen wasn't among the goals of Trump's tariff regimen, was it? Or was it?

I guess we (or more specifically, Carver) must hope more Americans will commence to buy boats, from Carver and others in the boat building industry, instead of houses and live on them. After all, there's a mortgage interest deduction for certain boats just as their is for houses.....

The OPer and many others don't understand what Trade WAR means.

You mean like Canada imposing a 10% tarrif on wood products to us in 2016?

Those who dreamed of some day being able to buy a Harley peaked about 5 years ago. More and more are too old now to ride with the result being the market is flooded with beautiful Harley's including late model.

Making it worse, Indian motorcycles - made in California (though largely from imported parts) - is kicking Harley in the ass. While Harley's have a bit more status, Indians are a superior bike. Harley's problem isn't tariffs, that's just an excuse. If it was legit, then Indian motorcycles would be crying too and they're not.

The question of a Trade War is do we gain more jobs than we lost (the answer is YES, there are more American jobs now) and long term protection of our industries.

You mean like Canada imposing a 10% tarrif on wood products to us in 2016?

Can you clarify what you mean here?

I do not think Canada put a 10% tariff on wood exported to the US,

Ajot.com........tariffs, a knotty problem

The U.S. accounts for roughly two-thirds of Canada’s softwood lumber exports. And Canadian lumber imports are the largest supplier to the U.S. softwood lumber market.

In the latest measure, the Commerce Department last January pared back duties for some Canadian producers to under 10% while maintaining them in the 20% range for others.

Note the US put the tariffs on Canadian lumber, not Canada
