Free education

It was about 1800 bucks for an entire year.
But okayfinewhatever, twenty large is big chunk of change for a lot of people in families making 25 large a year.
What I was getting at is, if your family's income or YOUR own individual income is less than 60-75 thousand a year*, in state tuition shouldn't be an issue at all for state residents who have the grades and the demonstrated ability to benefit.

(*Depending on what state you're in)
20 large is easy if you start when the child is born and let it ride for 18 years. $3k lump sum in a Gift Trust account did it for us. Now, not so sure. Wall Street isn't such a good deal nowadays.

Sure, provided nothing happens that forces you to commit that nest egg to something more urgent.
Ever had a kid born with five major heart defects that forces you to drop everything for a year so that you can save the kid's life?
Ever lose the ability to walk WHILE you're trying to save that kid's life?
Ever have your husband freak out and walk away from his family and the marriage because the prospect of a disabled wife AND disabled son was too much for him to handle?
Guess what happens to that nest egg.

I am glad that lots of folks like yourself have had calm and tranquil lives free of unexpected crises, and may the Good Lord bless and keep your life that way forever. Not everyone is that lucky, however.
Not all working families are that lucky.
All I am asking is for people to open their eyes to the fact that a crisis like that doesn't have to sink the chances for children who just want a fighting chance, and who demonstrate the ability to do the work.

Sorry if this has happened to you, but you must admit that this type of setback is not common. What IS common is what most of my siblings did, they found that there was work involved. Saw the same thing at work later on.
And you would likely enjoy our granddaughter....despite her own inoperable brain tumor, she is a cheerful soul.....even though so many of her little friends at Phoenix Children's Hospital have passed on. Her meds are more than her parents can earn, luckily she has insurance that covered 100% after the $15K annual deductible. Got a nephew that did not make it, lived 3 years with a sentence over his head. He never developed much, but he could roll across the floor and swipe his siblings cookies, and then smile....
