What does the above infographic tell us? This*:

*The bottom 40% of all Income Earners obtain only 14% of all Pre-tax Income
*Next 20% of all Income Earners obtain only 15% of all Pre-tax Income
*Next 20% of all Income Earners obtain only 19% of all Pre-tax Income
*The richest 20% of all Income Earners obtain 54% of all Pre-tax Income

Cogitate that rip-off of American workers.

My Point: There is one AND ONLY ONE solution to the enormous Income Disparity of the American economy, and it is a mandatory confiscation tax on Income above a given level.

What "given level"? Well that's debatable, so I'll start the debate at $10 megabucks.

Do I hear 20 ...?

*Each percentage is inexact because the vertical scale is not in units of 10.

You want to confiscate income above a certain level?
If you do actually get any of that money, what will you do with it?

Two objectives:
*Establish a National Health Care system that will be measured on (1) its ability to close the gap between the life-expectancy of Americans (79 years) and that of European (82 years); and (2) reduce the ridiculous cost-per-head of $8000 in the US to a level of an average $3000 in Europe.
*Subsidize post-secondary education (vocational, associate, bachelor, doctorate) for all comers to bring us in line once-again with European tertiary-level education ...

Income inequality is not the problem. It doesn't matter whether "you" and "I" earn vastly differing incomes. It matters whether one or both of us earn enough to support ourselves.

  • Bill --> $80K/year
  • Mark --> 180K/year
  • Mary --> $800K/year
  • Peter --> $8M/year
So long as the cost of living where each of the above four individuals lives is such that they can sustain themselves, that any of them makes more or less than the other merely indicates the extent of disposable income each of them has.

From a policy standpoint, the thing to do is to facilitate individuals' obtaining and bringing to bear the skills that the economy in which they find themselves demands. To the extent that those skills are "delivered" to the populace and any given individual(s) fail to avail themselves of them, well, that is what it is. I'm not going to force someone to "drink," and I will allow them to "die of thirst" if they refuse to "drink."

It tells us the distribution of household income from 1980 to a lustrum ago.

SHAME ON YOU

Income inequality is not the problem.

This one is really Over The Top. It demonstrates pure ignorance of the economic situation, likely provoked by a denial of the facts.

What can I say? Income Disparity is a major economic variable considered carefully by millions of economists around the world.

You are denying a fact that is obvious to economists but uncomfortable for the immensely rich - which America has in abundance and a group to which you likely belong:

Shame on you ...

Oh really? It's a "myth"?

What planet do you live on? Because on THIS ONE it is an awesome measurable reality that we call Income Disparity. Which has obviously piqued you.

Too bad. Get a degree in economics, and then come back to the forum ...

If you have a degree on the issue then should should ask for your money back.

People are not stagnant...………something you know little about.

Pathetic.

Moving right along ...

i don't support a "confiscation tax." i tentatively support taxing all income as income above a cap at slightly increased marginal rates (possibly 1990s marginal rates.) at what level to place the cap could be a point for debate.

Seriously? Do you truly not know the difference between an indicator of a problem and actual problem? Go back and read what I wrote.

What you wrote is not worth the effort, and I responded in that manner.

Yes, do because being intransigent, you really don't need to engage with me.
