Ford Throws in the towel on the America car market

Canada and Mexico too.

The only car it will do is the Mustang.

This is sad I hope we all agree, that they could not manage.

"The changes will also allow the company to devote more resources to SUVs and trucks, vehicles that have surged in popularity as consumers continue to lose interest in passenger cars, which no longer have a monopoly on good gas mileage. Ford also plans to bring 16 battery-electric vehicles to market by 2022."

If buyers don't want cars/sedans but prefer SUV's and pickups, why keep making them. Seems Ford is making a good decision.

Maybe try some tariffs?

I see a lot of cars on the road and cheap gas will not last forever.....did you notice too that Fiat(nee)Chrysler is shrinking on purpose too?

No more Focus or Fiesta St....

Those cars were a performance bargain.

A) The availability of small SUVs that get good mileage has risen.
B) The automakers realize that in 15-20 years most vehicles will be electric.
C) The automakers don't make much money on small cars.

AKA "We cant compete on cars, so we are giving up".

Silly thread. The fact is, consumers are not buying their cars. They ARE buying their SUVs and trucks.

You arent stupid enough to believe tariffs have anything to do with this are you?

It was a joke.

That's how capitalism works. You do understand that, right? ;)

Were you also sad when IBM stopped making typewriters?

I know that Ford fired their last boss and that the new boss made his bones selling office furniture so why should I doubt this turnaround plan?...

This sounds too much like Rumsfeld's "Leap Ahead" plan that was a disaster for my blood this idea of selling as many big trucks as they can now and putting all of their eggs in the new tech basket...."forget gas cars, they are so yesterday".

Maybe, but I suspect the furniture hawker may know a thing or two, and is less bogged down by an emotional attachment to company history.

One thing he might know is that it probably wouldn't be all that difficult to reintroduce 2 or 3 cars to the US market if demand surges. They're still making cars for the international market, and can knock out a bunch while US factories retool for cars.

Another is that quite a few of the dreaded SUVs these days get decent mileage (~30mph), which helps protect them if gas prices spike.

I don't see any reason to worry about it, unless you were planning to buy a Fiesta in 2020.

Good.

If only everyone knew when to quit.

F-Series, Mustang, Explorer (and I'm not even sure about the Mustang really, but it's iconic, so...)

Should be the only model's in production.

They will drop their current car lineup to 2, 1 economy car and the Mustang. The economy car most likely will come in several design layouts like hatchback, wagon etc.

And this doesn't mean that Ford can't or won't retool with a new car model at some point in the future.

I am not worried about Ford but this is sad that things have gotten this dicey for Ford, I think a big part of this is that Chrysler and GMC got enormous assistance from the US Government in order to avoid liquidation, which is where they were because of bad management....Ford which had done a better job and did not get or need a bailout and a wipe of their debts now finds themselves sinking. I do worry that the lesson here is that those who try to do things right and dont rely on corrupt Washington to keep them alive in spite of their bad performance are chumps, which is different from being worried about ford.

For the record I was very clear at the time that GMC and Chrysler should follow bankruptcy law, that they should not get such favors as they got from Corrupt Washington.

Making fun of Trump for prescribing tariffs to stop a global economy is sad and funny.

Give me a Toyota any time, I've had 2 Corollas, a Scion, and now a Prius. Well built cars that last.
