    Committee system

The Constitutional convention made great use of committees.

Committee Assignments Chart and Commentary | Teaching American History

A — Rules Committee (created May 25, delivered report on May 28) – 3 members
B — First Committee of Representation (created July 2, also known as “the Gerry Committee”) – 11 members
C — Second Committee of Representation (created July 6, also known as “the Committee of Five”) – 5 members
    D — Third Committee of Representation (created July 9) – 11 members
E — Committee of Detail (created July 24, report delivered on August 6 and discussed throughout August) – 5 members
F — Committee of Assumption of State Debts (created August 18) – 11 members
G — Committee of Slave Trade (created Aug. 22, also known as “the Livingston Committee,” delivered report on Aug. 24) – 11 members
    H — Committee of Trade (created August 25) – 11 members
    I — Committee of State Commitments (created August 29) – 11 members
J — Committee of Leftovers (created August 31, also known as “the Brearly Committee”) – 11 members
K — Committee of Style (created Sept. 10, report delivered on Sept. 12 and discussed during the remainder of the Convention) 5 members
L — Committee of Economy, Frugality and Manufactures (created September 13) – 5 members

Other members have mentioned this fact, but I have only heard it mentioned a few times. Perhaps we havent got that far yet?

I believe that as some point, it will be best if we do set up some committees but I don't think we're at the point yet. However, that is just my initial impression, and I could be convinced otherwise.

who wants committee of the slave trade?

no takers? c'mon there's per diem!

    LOL

for our purposes I think 4 would work

    1) legislative committee
    2) Judicial
    3) executive
    4)civil rights

    maybe 5

powers of federal v state jurisdiction

    would do.

I was thinking something along those lines too, but #1-3 would be more like "one committee for each branch of govt" because we are not required to have three branches as we do now. In fact, I have an idea for a 4th branch. Others may have ideas for additional branches also.

What would a 4th branch be?

    what would their function be?

how would these functions not overlap with the traditional three branch model?

I'm going to hold off presenting my proposal until we start writing up an outline for the constitution

Any suggestions for how many people should be on each committee?

    Those interested enough to participate?

The "Setting Priorities" poll is an extremely good place to find the candidates for the committees. You should match up interests of the members with the committee objectives.

I'll try my best to convince you. Committees are obnoxious and often mocked. If you form committees people will make fun of you and make fun of the committee members. This is not sufficient reason to avoid it.

Currently we have no rules in place for how to bring a vote to the floor. That power currently lies with the President. I think a committee with an unanimous vote should have the authority to bring a vote to the floor. Forming committees is a really good idea. I'm very comfortable advising the president on committee appointments. I am comfortable searching for talent and interest.
