Looks like this virus will be with us forever.

The Coronavirus Is Never Going Away - The Atlantic

just like the flu

The coronavirus that causes COVID-19 has sickened more than 16.5 million people across six continents. It is raging in countries that never contained the virus. It is resurging in many of the ones that did. If there was ever a time when this coronavirus could be contained, it has probably passed. One outcome is now looking almost certain: This virus is never going away.
The coronavirus is simply too widespread and too transmissible. The most likely scenario, experts say, is that the pandemic ends at some point—because enough people have been either infected or vaccinated—but the virus continues to circulate in lower levels around the globe. Cases will wax and wane over time.

I wonder what it must have been like when human beings were first struck by the common cold. I wonder if it was something akin to a sudden plague, and how many people died from it before most of swathes humanity developed an immunity to the virus and it later became a relatively trifling seasonal malady.

what do the experts agree on, and have consistently agreed on for the last six months?

Pretty much everything that trump continues to campaign against: Mask-wearing, social distancing, not taking hydroxychloroquin, and that trump's claims and rhetoric is harmful.

Oh: also that testing is the problem. that testing creates more cases, as if the cases wouldn't exist without testing for the virus.

You all really don't love Biden or even support him-you just hate Trump. Well I can understand that because I mainly support Trump because he is going to upset the people whose politics I find disgusting

You heard it here folks! Tweedle dee admitting he wanted the responses he is getting, thousands of dead americans, and more just to spite the libs.

That we dont really have much immunity to other than surviving from it. I dont think a virus that attacks and destroys so much of the body and inflicts sars on a victim will lessen that much.

- They agree that CV19 is infectious. This virus was new and much still needs to be learned about it.

Medical experts have changed some of their recommendations as they learned more about CV19.

For example, doctors did take a look at HCQ possible treatment for CV19. Enough studies were done to determine it is not all that effective compared to other treatments.
At first they didn't recommend masks. As more was learned how the virus spreads they recommended mask and social distancing.

My take is President Trump takes the changes in recommendation as a doctor was wrong at beginning so they changed. Instead of realizing doctors are learning and adapting their recommendations.

So you've joined the accelerationist bandwagon.

Fortunately most Americans are not willing to give up on fighting this disease. We've conquered massive challenges before, and we can conquer this one too.

Yeah, conservatives seem to just want to lie down and die, these days.

No gumption.

See the difference between trumpists and me is if Biden actively sabotaged our pandemic response like trump has, i wouldnt defend him to own conservatives. That requires a special kind of petty bastard.

You misunderstand us. We want to lay down and die in the comfort of our jobs, damn it!

has his "Specialist" been consistent with his advice? Does his "specialist" have to deal with the economic crisis that a shutdown caused?

- It is clear for example Dr. Fauci and President Trump do not agree on medical advice for CV19.-
- Dr. Fauci has stated he deals with the medical issues and recommendations . Not economic , not social

Of course the President has to consider other things when dealing with the virus. What we don't know is what if the US did not shut down? How many more people would have gotten sick? Can you tell me what that impact would have had on the economy? As you cannot tell what the impact would have been to the health system if no shutdown was put in place.

From what I have read there is enough studies to indicate HCQ is not that effective in treatment of CV19. Yet President Trump still promotes it either directly or indirectly. That is not helpful.

yet the experts have not consistently agreed on anything.

What about hand washing ?

I have not heard of an expert that disagreed with that.

I've joined nothing. One of my good college friends-later a senior legal advisor at the Heritage Foundation, posted this article on FB. Three doctor friends of mine said the same thing-that this virus is similar to the cold in the sense that it most likely cannot be eradicated.

That may very well be, but the problem has been when large groups of people get infected you end up with more cases than hospitals can handle. Even in the scenario where it is around indefinitely, slower exposure makes it more manageable. Thus far every country that's experienced large amounts of cases has either mandated restrictions on activities or people have done so voluntarily. With lower exposure you'll still get people getting the disease over time rather than in one fell swoop. Once there's a vaccine we can increase the amount of people with antibodies and reduce the amount of unexposed people even further.

It took about two years for the 1918 influenza to go away. Two thirds of the worlds population was infected, 50 million deaths worldwide with about 675,000 deaths occurring in the United States. Currently in the US, there about 1.5 million infected with Covid-19, with about 155, 000 deaths and it's only been seven months.

We'll get through this...dead or alive.

Following the 3 Ws Is helping to save lives.

1. Wash hands
2. Watch distance
3. Wear a mask

Is helping.

Our Motto should be :

Save a business wear a mask

Wear a mask and rescue your favorite small business from coronavirus

You don’t believe wearing masks will help end this pandemic? Consider the consequences:

• If the experts are wrong, and yet we all wear masks, what’s the downside? We’ll be a bit uncomfortable.

If the experts are right, and yet we do not wear masks, what’s the downside? Hundreds of thousands of more small businesses will die; their owners and employees will lose their livelihoods; their communities will lose their vitality and much of their tax base; and, inevitably and tragically, tens of thousands more Americans will die.

Wearing a mask is a small price to pay, a small bet to make to save small businesses, save lives, save our economy. Do your part to help save small businesses: Wear a mask.

Yep, slowly the herd immunity grows.

The epidemic will run its course and the human species will add one more virus to the list of those it has lived with forever.

This political event will subside after Trump loses.

Science has improved in the last 100 years. I'm optimistic there will be a vaccine within 6 months.

If a vaccine is fastracked just because we need to something - anything, it's likely the cure will be useless or actually cause damage.

We helped win two world wars, we put a man on the Moon, we won the Cold War, we got civil rights, we became the envy of the world, we survived 9/11, but somehow a viral disease is going to be the thing that beats us??

If you've given up, Turtle, that's your decision. I haven't, and I won't. I will not let the defeatists drag me down to their level.

Yeah, conservatives seem to just want to lie down and die, these days.

Their defeatism is unpatriotic. It makes one wonder where it came from.

If like the flu, we can develop a vaccine that will offer some protection vs most strains. It will limit the potential infections each and every year, and even if the vaccine is not an exact match for the strain/s going around it can help make the resulting illness less severe

The opportunity to shut the virus down was lost by late March early April. That would have required coordination between all countries in the world, working together with the same goal of trying to eradicate the virus. Just one country that did not try it could cause all the work to fail. Ebola being far less virulent would not require such a coordinated effort

The scenario presented in this post is one of several. Much depends upon factors which are as yet poorly known or, for that matter, unknown. About all we can do at this point is assign probabilities to them, often with extremely broad +/- limits.

Regards, stay safe 'n well. Remember the Big 3: masks, hand washing and physical distancing.

Here are some scary numbers with the flu.

Spanish Influenza, 1918-19
No other epidemic has claimed as many lives as the Spanish Influenza epidemic in 1918-1919. Worldwide, as many as 40 million people died as this virulent illness swept through city after city (some estimates put total deaths closer to 70 million). Stories abounded of people dying within hours of first feeling ill. The mortality rate was highest among adults under age 50, who were, for unknown reasons, particularly vulnerable to serious disease resulting from this strain of influenza.

and here in the U.S.

The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States

The population of the U.S. when the flu came out was 103 million, which is one third of what it is now, meaning that if the same amount of population had been around in 1918, about 2 million Americans would have died.

The truth about how long it will take for a vaccine to be found

A vaccine would be the ultimate weapon against the coronavirus and the best route back to normal life. Officials like Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the top infectious disease expert on the Trump administration’s coronavirus task force, estimate a vaccine could arrive in at least 12 to 18 months.

The grim truth behind this rosy forecast is that a vaccine probably won’t arrive any time soon. Clinical trials almost never succeed. We’ve never released a coronavirus vaccine for humans before. Our record for developing an entirely new vaccine is at least four years — more time than the public or the economy can tolerate social-distancing orders.

If we do not get our act straight regarding the CDC guidelines to dealing with the virus (social distancing, wearing of masks, rapid testing and contact tracing), we will have hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of deaths here in the U.S.

This is why we need a new president, given than Trump is not doing what is necessary to slow down the growth of the virus.

So? What do we do next, get the vaccine and vaccinate everyone or simply ignore it and watch Millions die before their time? Solutions?

The majority of those who die from the virus come from demographics who have other medical conditions. It is not the same boogeyman for everyone, even if the media and Democrats spins it this way. Most people who get the virus either don't know, or they get something closer to common cold or flu like symptoms.

If you look at the demographics, who are worse impacted and who account for the majority of deaths, one gets the impression this was a designer virus, designed to lower long term medical costs. About 10% of the population, uses about 90% of the medical resources. These people are the main target of the virus. Is this a coincidence?

I can see socialist China doing R&D, looking for cost cutting measures to deal with hundreds of millions of their people who use and will use lots of future medical resources. The Democrat also want socialism and they appear to cheer this on. They even double down on socialism wanting to use the corona virus as an excuse to fund other socialist measures.

Once a vaccine is widely available (like the flue vaccine), life will go back to normal.

Last I heard, it will be less than a year at this point.

you were howling for a new president since the day you joined this board. So pardon me if I find your calls to be of dubious honesty.
