Stimulus impasse threatens both economy and Trump | TheHill

Bungled negotiations over the next stimulus package and a resurgence of coronavirus infections are threatening the U.S. economic recovery, creating problems for President Trump as he charts the path forward for his reelection campaign.

The White House and Congress remain far from a deal negotiations over the next stimulus package, even as expanded unemployment benefits and a federal moratorium on evictions expire, though the two sides touted progress following an unusual weekend meeting.

The White House has sought to blame Democrats for the failure to reach a short-term deal to extend the employment benefits and pause evictions, but Republicans waited weeks to begin formal negotiations and have yet to come together on a package themselves.

Now there is no progress as fears grow that unemployment, after falling for two months, will rise when the next jobs report is released on Friday. A number of states have introduced new restrictions as they saw COVID-19 cases surge.

People who are broke, jobless, crammed into covid-ridden shelters are not going to vote for Trump.

Trump haters may be unaware, but smart people who don't rely on the MSM to tell them what to think will know that it's not "The White House and Congress" that remain far from a deal. It's the Senate and the House. In other words, Congress.

And when Congress goes on vacation in a few days...without a deal...the smart people will understand that it was Congress who failed. Not Trump.

This is why I've been recently posting that Pelosi is in the catbird seat. The GOP need to govern, or Trump is a goner. She has passed a populace bill ($600/wk) a month ago, and Mitch has nothing but obstruction. If Trump gets hurt, the Senate goes with him. Pelosi will out-wait Mitch, and get what she wants.

They're too busy out protesting and rioting.

You're kidding yourself here. When the evictions, foreclosures, and vehicle repossessions begin during this mishandled Covid induced recession, you are dreaming if you think this will be a good thing for Trump. Do you not see the current Trump polling? Think it will get better when the economy gets worse? And people end-up on the street?

Exactly, Pelosi has Mitch by the short hairs, he needs to pass a Bill and being that those Republican Senators not up for reelection are willing to do nothing, he needs the Dems to do it. She set this up a month ago, meaning she is play chess while they play checkers. Awwww, shoe is on the other foot this time and she now controls this show.
That said I think they will pass one next week, an entire Bill not just bits and pieces, Mitch will get some of what he wants and Pelosi will get a better deal by far for the American People. Say what you will about her, love her or hate her, but Pelosi is one very smart cookie.

Govern you say, lol, R's don't govern, they rule by passing laws to hurt their political enemies, the dreaded libs. The gop is being exposed as the party of 'business' at the cost to everything and everyone not in the top ten percent. Somehow they convince their base this is the American dream.

The gop is in a deep hole and it/they just keep furiously digging.

The Dems and Trump haters certainly want all that to happen to citizens. It's the only thing they think can get them a win.

As I said...smart people know who is not getting the stimulus done...and it's not Trump.

Yep. The first rule of holes is, 'stop digging'!

Honestly, I can't imagine her position to be any stronger. Mitch knows it so badly, it's laughable.

Yeah, she beat Mitch when she passed the House bill in a matter of days - over a month ago. And she took the populace approach: Full unemployment compensation through next January, money to the states for citizen testing & medical supplies, hazard pay and childcare for essential workers, eviction and foreclosure assistance, and student loan relief for both public & private loans.

That said I think they will pass one next week, an entire Bill not just bits and pieces, Mitch will get some of what he wants and Pelosi will get a better deal by far for the American People. Say what you will about her, love her or hate her, but Pelosi is one very smart cookie.
Pelosi will get pretty much all of what she needs, and most of what she wants. I'm guessing at least 400 bucks a week unemployment for 4 months, a good chunk of change for the states, and student loan relief.

McConnel will get liability protection for his donors, and Trump will get the FBI building across the street from his hotel.

You heard it here, first!

You seem to have forgotten that the House passed a relief bill more than two months ago. The Senate could have started negotiations with the House way back then on May 16, but no the Senate Republicans have been negotiating with the White House wanting to get an agreement with them first instead. The reason the House and Senate are far apart is that the Senate just started negotiations at the very last minute. The House has been ready to negotiate for months.

Perhaps you’ve also forgotten that part of the problem with the White House/Senate Republican negotiations was the White House’s insistence that a new FBI building be included in the package to protect Trump’s hotel from competition. This was too blatant a misuse of presidential power for even Senate Republicans to stomach. Now that Trump sees there is a good chance he might lose the election he is trying to hurry up and take care of the things that he ACTUALLY cares about.

You are wrong.

Here's what Pelosi put in her bill:

Full unemployment compensation through next January, money to the states for citizen testing & medical supplies, hazard pay and childcare for essential workers, eviction and foreclosure assistance, and student loan relief for both public & private loans.

Here's what McConnel wants:

Liability protection for his donors

Here's what Trump wants:

New F.B.I. Building accross the street from his D.C. Hotel

As I said...smart people know who is not getting the stimulus done...and it's not Trump.
Not True at all. Pelosi has passed a very populace bill. McConnel has done nothing. Trump remains silent.

Pelosi is the only one coming to the aid of the people.

yeah Democrats want to steal some of that money to fund some of their nonsense instead of Justin letting the people use it.

The GOP support POTUS's vision of our country, i.e., American carnage.

These days tribalism is truth. Will you have the tribe that says orange man bad. therefore everything he does his bad from the way he drinks his water, do the way he Combs his hair.

it doesn't matter that Democrats are trying to steal stimulus money from the people who need it to fund stupid nonsense like the Kennedy center.

The tribal leaders say orange man bad therefore that's the truth to them. Further they can do no wrong so it's less like a tribal leader and more like a demigod.

Youve just explained quite well why democrats arent looking for a deal.

How is deciding to give people stimulus rather than stupid institutions stimulus Carnage?

The "stimulus" has lined the pockets of his donors over those who stimulate the economy by putting the funds directly to business and services.

Trump insisted that any stimulus deal had to involve defunding SSI.

Now he owns the wreckage.

They're not. At least, not much. And I believe they are in the right (for the most part).

My post #11 above, explains my rationale:

What? I find this hard to believe.

It is not exactly as it was written. Here is the trail to the SSI claims: Trump: No COVID Aid Unless Congress Defunds Social Security.

(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Nancy Altman, President of Social Security Works, in response to Donald Trump demanding that the next coronavirus relief package include a cut in the payroll tax, Social Security’s dedicated revenue:

“The coronavirus pandemic is raging across America. Essential workers are in desperate need of tests and personal protective equipment (PPE). Millions of Americans are at risk of eviction. Over 57,000 nursing home residents and workers are dead. Hospitals are in danger of becoming overwhelmed.

Donald Trump is doing nothing to address any of this. Instead, he’s stated his intentions to hold any Congressional relief package hostage for his top priority: Defunding Social Security by starving it of its dedicated revenue.

As economic stimulus, this approach makes no sense. Payroll tax cuts waste money, delivering the wealthy and powerful the largest cuts while providing nothing to those who need it most, such as the millions about to lose their COVID unemployment benefits.

But cutting Social Security contributions advances a longstanding right-wing ideological goal: Weakening our Social Security system.

Congress must not give into Trump’s hostage-taking. Every Senator and Representative needs to call Trump’s bluff and work together to quickly send a COVID relief bill to Trump’s desk — without including any cuts to Social Security’s dedicated revenue.”
