Louie Gohmert and casualities of the cult of Donald Trump - Los Angeles Times

To the editor: Virginia Heffernan is too kind to Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) and other Republicans who refuse to wear masks, for their stupidity is just another manifestation of their cultish belief in President Trump.

If Trump calls the virus the “China Virus,” so must his followers. If he says mail-in voting leads to fraud and that there is no Russian interference in our elections, or that he is the greatest of all presidents, then so say the faithful.

On the other hand, there is a certain logic in this for Republican political candidates. After all, if they don’t slavishly follow their master, they might not get elected, thus confirming founding father James Madison’s fears: “I go on this great republican principle, that the people will have virtue and intelligence to select men of virtue and wisdom. Is there no virtue among us? If there be not, we are in a wretched situation.

Up until the last few weeks of World War II, millions of Germans still believed their Fuhrer would rescue them from defeat and ruin. But of course we are more virtuous and wise than they were, right?

The GOP needs a gold old fashioned purge - like a bad case of diarrhea- to cure the party of Trumpkins. It will take several election cycles if it happens at all.

It comes down to this: Conservatives need someone to tell them what to think... That's why Fox news does so well, and why Limbaugh's been around for decades.

Cons can't think for themselves, they're lazy so they don't want to do their own homework on any issue.. So they need to be told what to think..

Obamaphone, Pizzagate, Birther lies.. These plus dozens of other things that were easily debunked, but lazy Cons couldn't be bothered to see that these, and many other issues were lies and propaganda.. So they were, and still are easily lead around by their noses. Like sheep, lazy sheep..

Is that particular to Republicans?

You lost me. Are you suggesting Hilary Clinton and Bill Clinton are clean and innocent people? Are you suggesting there was no corruption and sheep behaviour during any regime other then Conservative ones?

When you make a sweeping statement that could apply to almost anyone in the world, then reduce it to a partisan statement only designed to single out Conservatives to justify a negative stereotype of them all, you engage in the very sheepish behaviour you challenge Trump and his followers of engaging in do you not?

Partisan comments without objective basis to establish them are just hot air and divisive name calling the very thing you jump on Trump for.

This name calling has become so entrenched in daily dialogue. Why? Is it the cellphone and internet that has dumbed everyone down and reduced us to short, mindless, rhetorical staements? Lol just like the one I made? I think it has a lot to do with it. Cellphone-internet has brought up a new generation of non-critical black and white extreme view communicators who can't even handle a political forum response of more than one verb.

Are you saying Pizzagate was true? That Obama put the Obamaphone program in place to buy votes(hint, he had NOTHING to do with that program).. That Trump's 'team' is going to find Obama's Kenyan birth certificate? That the Clinton's had Seth Rich killed? And as a matter of fact that they are responsible for 30+ killings?

I'm not talking about corruption. I'm talking about over the top, vicious lies that are so far fetched anyone with a brain could see they are lies. But most Cons don't want to be bothered with looking into these lies, they want to turn on Fox and be told Pizzagate is true. and that Obama was giving away cells phones to buy votes..

Google is their friend.. They could find out in 10 seconds the truth about the Obamaphone, but they won't.. To this day many still believe the 100% lie they were told on Fox news.

The Internet shouldn't dumb down anyone, if someone wants to take the time to see if these issues are true or not, it's right at their fingertips. Many Cons don't, because they are lazy and want to be told what to think.

The first purge will be in November. The GOP is in for one hell of a pasting, they are like a deer caught in the glow of the 2016 election. They have not a clue how badly this next election will be to there ranks.

Is that particular to Republicans?

For the last decade or so...YES.
I'll take the hit if you say that the Dems used to be that way.
YES WE WERE, which is WHY we lost so badly in Congress in 1994.

I can only resort to anecdotal stuff but since this is a measure of human laziness and the death of intellectual and political curiosity, anecdotal accounts aren't so terrible.
By my measure, most of the people I know personally who USED to walk around muttering about how they "don't want anything to do with politics"...have LARGELY STOPPED saying that and a good many of those same people are now asking a lot of questions.

If there's one thing the Age of Trump has done, it has awakened a lot of formerly "sleepy" people in the center and center left, the ones who used to be complacent, the ones who seldom if ever bothered to vote.

One of the things Republicans have ALWAYS been VERY good at is organizing the vote so I cannot accuse them of being too lazy and complacent to not bother voting, but when it comes to informing themselves, they have largely drunk the Kool-Aid while the ones who do not have become Never-Trumpers.
It's almost like the divine culling of the wheat from the chaff and it's how I am able to distinguish honest conservatives with some measure of integrity.

And although those honest cons irritate the Hell out of me sometimes, I am first to say that libs need cons as much as cons need libs. Country over party.
Trumpers specifically reject Country Over Party.
They have proven that beyond the shadow of a doubt.
That is why even the Federalist Society is now calling for Trump's immediate impeachment!

They refused to learn the lesson off their drubbing 2018 - they now deserve everything that is coming to them in the way of voter wrath.

I remember when the left counted their chickens before they hatched in August of 2016.
How'd that all work out?

:wink2:

With 150K+ dead Americans and -33% GDP growth.

So, poorly.

And you're loving it … all the while you condemn, blame, and misplace it onto Trump.
I guess you haven't noticed that the virus is widespread now almost equally in rural places as it is in urban areas of the country.
I suppose you're gonna' blame that on the POTUS? People who live in glass houses.

Like I said, don't count your chickens before they hatch. Biden who remains silent on speaking to the American public on the issues without a handler by his side, a media clown tossing him softballs, just might not make it to the WH.

And you're loving it …

No, I hate it. I hate that severe damage to this country under an incompetent, ill-equipped president was eminently foreseeable and I hate that making a dimwitted gameshow host president has been every bit as catastrophic as many of us feared.

Get real and stop blaming one man for the spread of the virus throughout the world...It's ignorance.

So you're broke, hungry, unemployed, homeless, cramped into a covid-ridden shelter. Are you going to vote for another 4 years of Trump? Look what 4 years of his authoritarianism has done for us all.

It is the same with Brexiteers in the UK. Their capacity for swallowing lies is truly astounding.

It might not be complete but I see it almost complete this fall. It's going to be massive.

Yes and they all favor the simplest of solutions to the most complex problems. This is where Trump comes in. "Only I can fix it" is the simplest of solutions and the simpletons just ate it up.

Trump is to blame for the USA having the worst results in the western world from Covid 19. You need to wake up and smell the roses. His "leadership" has killed 10's of 1000's of us needlessly.

The river of blood on Trumps hands will help to purge to begin the process of removing the GOP of the tea party stench.

What you assume is that there is symmetry between the two parties, each equal in virtue and vice. It’s not true.

The reality of 21st-century U.S. politics is one of asymmetric polarization in many dimensions. One of these dimensions is intellectual: While there are some serious, honest conservative thinkers, they have no influence on the modern Republican Party. What’s a centrist to do? The answer, all too often, has involved what we might call motivated gullibility. Centrists who couldn’t find real examples of serious, honest conservatives lavished praise on politicians who played that role on TV. Paul Ryan wasn’t actually very good at faking it; true fiscal experts ridiculed his “mystery meat” budgets. But never mind: The narrative required that the character Ryan played exist, so everyone pretended that he was the genuine article.

How did the most corrupt presidential candidate in American history eke out an Electoral College victory? There were many factors, any one of which could have turned the tide in a close election. But it wouldn’t have been close if much of the news media hadn’t engaged in an orgy of false equivalence.

Some commentators were surprised at the way men who talked nonstop about fiscal probity under Barack Obama cheerfully supported tax cuts that exploded the deficit under Trump. The answer, of course, is that the principles they claimed to have never had anything to do with their actual goals. In particular, Republicans haven’t abandoned their concerns about budget deficits, because they never cared about deficits; they only faked concern as an excuse to cut social programs.

This isn’t limited to fiscal matters. We also see it with corruption and nepotism.
