Absolutely. Roughly half of masks in our area are the blue/white disposable variety.

Nobody making them? It is pretty simple.

You can even make a decent one without sewing.

I'm not sure DP's search function goes back that far, but I can try.

Go for it.

Valve is not optimal, but it is not nothing.

Early on I was using one with a valve. I just put a filter over it (there was a pocket).

The point is to protect you from me...so any layers to protect me spewing onto you is a good thing. That is the concept. I walked into Kaiser with one. They made me change into a hospital grade mask (they have no clue who has a covered exhale valve). When my ultrasound was complete and I left Kaiser, I placed on my original mask. I did not try to explain about the covered valve. They are just doing their jobs.

I have cute ones, but if I am going to be out awhile, I use my Tommy Copper. It is so dang comfortable. I can wear it for long periods....even during an asthma flare up.

This is almost 4 months in. Ask around. This will likely be a way of life for a few months to come. Why depend on cheap ass walmart crap?

There it is again. That's the kind of language I'm picking up on.

I said, "roughly half" of masks I see are the disposable masks. That means "roughly half" of the masks I see are cloth masks, but you think I said "nobody". I said half, not nobody.

I said cloth masks are not PPE, not that they don't provide any protection at all.

Because in a previous thread you told me not to use the N95 masks my employer-provided since they have a valve, and everything else has been sold out for months. Frankly I'm surprised we have TP in stock.

Where are you that you cannot get TP?

I said "I'm surprised TP is in stock"...meaning TP is, in fact, in stock, I'm just surprised about it...and you think I said TP is out.

They are not meant to protect you. They are meant to protect people from you. So if everybody wears one. You are protected.

I see the rare disposable mask (outside of work in hospital).

They are meant to protect people from you.
The cloth mask on your face does not protect other people from you. Only something that offers enough protection to be considered PPE could make that claim and cloth masks do not offer enough protection to be PPE.

That's why the CDC is very careful in its choice of words, saying "cloth masks may help slow the spread". The CDC was told to give you something to do so you didn't panic, but the CDC also doesn't want to get sued in the long run. They don't use verbiage like "may help slow" when it comes to PPE. They use firm "this is proven to prevent" verbiage.

When you say "So if everybody wears one. You are protected", that is the act of treating cloth masks like PPE. If everyone wears a cloth mask, you are still NOT protected.

Why are you surprised?

There was craziness early on. It reminded me of 9/11 stockpiling. Lots of crazy behavior in crazy times. Once confidence increased, the shortages seemed to diminish.

The only place I see a line for any more is Trader Joes. And that is because they are strictly controlling numbers of people allowed in stores. Once you get in, it is quicker than ever. And they are fully stocked.

Of course if a person wears a simple cloth mask it provides some protection for the people surrounding the person wearing the mask.
Again. I will trust the epidemiologists over a random internet guy pretending he knows something.

2% is about 6 million dead Americans. We already have over 130,000 dead Americans. Was your idiotic meme supposed to suggest we should do nothing and just let the virus ravage our people? Try to stay on topic and engage meaningfully instead of lazily showing us how ignorant you are.

He isn't lazy.
It was a lot of work for him to come up with "Boomer Remover" as a meme.

BTW Trump and Team Trump get tested every single day.
That means Trump understands everything, in reality.
He just doesn't give a damn if you can't stay safe.
He doesn't give a damn about you, or anyone in fact.
He's just an asshole, just like some other people.

Of course if a person wears a simple cloth mask it provides some protection...

That's not good enough to be treated like PPE.

Uh, no. The rated saftey glasses and Kevlar gloves I wear every day at work are not medical equipment yet *are* PPE.

oh, okay. in that case a cloth mask is a PPE. thanks for the clarification.

I have not.

I have very clearly stated that it is not.

Rules about the lay public wearing masks is specifically about protecting people around the wearer. Not the wearer.

I did say that if the person wearing the cloth mask wears a fresh mask everytime it is contaminated (hand touches any surface then mask, etc), and the person is perfect with hand hygiene and distancing...there might be some protection for the wearer. Not an easy thing to do. That does not make it PPE. Maybe in your mind?

...also NO!

PPE, according to OSHA, is an item that minimizes exposure to various hazards. Cloth masks do not minimize your exposure to covid. Lots of people on this forum frequently say "it helps", but that's not good enough. Providing some level of "help" is not good enough. It has to minimize exposure, not merely "help". N95 masks are PPE because they minimize exposure. Cloth masks do not minimize exposure and so cloth masks are not PPE. The CDC even says so.

The danger in treating cloth masks like PPE is that everyone reduces how often they wash their hands, social distance, etc; plus most people don't wear their cloth mask correctly or even wash them frequently (eew, btw). The net result is cloth masks do more harm than good.

I get it. So CDC guidance that cloth masks reduce risks to self and others is of course bull****. I get it. any excuse to be a selfish idiot. makes perfect sense.

Because of testing, and a younger meadian population age than America.

Not masks.

If you're a normal heathy adult, covid-19 won't even give you the sniffles.
Europe has an older median population age than the U.S. You are clueless.

I have several young healthy coworkers that will call you FOS on that one.

BTW, that is past test. They WERE healthy. Still young.
