I live in a small town in the South. Everyone I saw today (except two) wore masks in public.

As I was driving to pickup something for my wife at a strip mall (Dicks, TJ Maxx, etc) I was shocked. Everyone (maybe 70-90 people), as I drove by all the stores, wore masks. Everybody.

Picked up our purchase, started home and right before I turned out of the strip mall I saw what looked like a grandmother and her grand kid and they didn't have masks. I thought it was gonna be 100% until the very last second.

That's huge for us. Just a few weeks ago I was seeing maybe 30% of people wearing masks in public. So, it appears that a bunch of people in our small town are now playing team ball.

Good for your hometown neighbours. It's part of being a member of a community, getting behind an effort like this. There will always be a few who will cross their arms and refuse to be inconvenienced and it won't be forgotten who can be counted on and who can't.

yeah, one of my best friends is at the beach purposely partying because he believes it's all a hoax. the crappy part is it takes much fewer selfish people to ruin it for all of us.

True that. All you can do is keep a fathom betwixt you and anyone not covering their nose and mouth. At least. By the end of summer we should be getting back to normal.
If it could be done, I think anyone refusing to follow safety protocols should have to wait until everyone else has been vaccinated once a vaccine is found. Who needs to be vaccinated against a hoax anyway?

Interesting. Do you think it's caused by reality coming home, via the pandemic growing on their doorsteps? Or, by the GOP & Trump coming around?

We won't be back to normal by the end of the summer if people refuse to wear a mask in public and social distance. And if some governors refuse to make masks mandatory.

Strange phenomenon in my area with the people going in and coming out of retail stores: The people at the highest risk seem to be the least likely to wear the masks. Morbidly obese, elderly, and obvious health issues. I sat in my car and observed while the wife ran in, and was aghast. Also for some reason the Amish in my area refuse to wear them, even though in the next county over --that has the second largest Amish community in the country -- cases are spiking. The local physician that treats many of them is in the hospital fighting for his life due to Covid-19.

What's with that?

Obvious answer is wearing a mask demonstrates rejection of Trump and those are Trump people.
I remember seeing TV coverage of a Trump rally with protesters carrying signs across the street. The TV crew was interviewing Trump supporters on the lawn outside the venue including one woman spilling over the sides of a heroically-struggling lawn chair who said of the protesters, "Those aren't Americans. They're liberals!"

Maybe it took something like the Chief Medical Director in S. Carolina saying "put the damned mask on!" to get some people to wake the hell up already and put on a damn mask. We haven't had to resort to other methods yet.

Fox News has turned on a dime and started changing their tune also.

......wait for it. Next they claim they've been saying it all along - 'wear a mask'.

I can definitely see the effect of Canada's relationship with the Crown, there.

The only thing missing was,

"and tarry a fortnight"

i'm not sure.

There are subtle differences in language. We get Thomas Hardy and Joseph Conrad in high school when an American is reading Herman Melville and Mark Twain. And one of my favourites, Jack London.
And to be honest, just between us, sometimes we Canucks accent the difference just slightly to maintain a sense of identity.

I live in a fairly republican area and mask wearing was nearly universal a couple months ago. Its has tailed off a bit, but the simple minded argument that mask wearing is a left/right issue is just more simple minded leftist idiocy. What I have noticed is that the various levels of mask wearing--from full mask to nose not being covered to mask on chin to no mask at all--is consistent across racial lines. In other words, blacks who are more likely to vote democrat are just as likely as evil white right wingers to not wear a mask or wear them improperly.

People on the right dont hang on Trumps every word the way the kooks on the left do. Mask wearing is dictated by the perceived threat level in a given area not what the president says. The risk of contracting the virus in Mentor Ohio is not the same as it is in New York City and mask wearing disparities in those two areas reflect the risk

It's not simple-minded leftist lunacy. It's simple-minded Trumpist lunacy. He said himself that some people wear masks to show opposition to him.
It might not be true that all Trumpsts don't wear masks but it might very well be true that all who refuse to wear masks are Trumpists. And you know this.

Thats not true at all. But as a leftist Canadian, when it comes to discussing Americans, you dont know wtf you are talking about.

Either fortunately, or unfortunately, I haven't decided which - early in life I was the recipient of a European style Grammar School system replete with (often newly imported) European nuns!

The OED was our Bible. It was the prize of our library, sitting atop an elaborate podium for all to marvel. We spent two years daily memorizing an abridged version, from Aardvark to Zygote. Every day! I still often spell using "our" rather than "or" (colour, behaviour, etc.). Old habits die hard.

(FYI - "Call of the Wild" was required reading, though Hemingway was well represented as well)

Thanks for giving me your take on it. Yeah, I suspect you are right here in the majority of cases.

While my city and much of the immediate metro area is strongly Democratic, some of the suburbs and outlying areas are Republican. I'm seeing a very high level of mask compliance over-all, regardless of political affiliation. I chalk it up to living in one of the most infected counties in the country. We saw a lot of carnage, and it scared the hell out of us. Thankfully, we got a handle on it and reduced our numbers substantially.

Same here, small town rural area. More masks the past couple weeks than before, not due to new orders. It's nowhere close to 99% like you've got, but more people are wearing them. You know, part of it is probably just people seeing other people wearing them figure they better, too.

Hell, I'd say that this leftist Canadian knows more what he's talking about than a rightist American. I'm not blindered by toxic hyper-partisanship like you and so many other American rightists are. You guys have made every****ingthing a partisan issue. And you just drift on the Trump river- by this time next week wearing a mask will be a proud, patriotic gesture.

At the end of the day, we're all looking at the same infection rate graphs and the same polling numbers.

I'm thinking this recent spike in cases has people nervous.
