(CNN)Only two US states are reporting a decline in new coronavirus cases compared to last week: Connecticut and Rhode Island.

A rise was reported in a staggering 36 states, including Florida, which some experts have cautioned could be the next epicenter for infections.

With this current tally today, I think it's fair to say we've lost the battle with the coronavirus. Our state-by-state win/loss/tie record is 2-36-12. Our infection rate is setting new record highs as the pandemic continues to grow larger than ever before.

I don't see it getting better anytime soon. We are not doing what we need to do to safely reopen the economy, and that economic cost will have it's own hellacious effects in addition to the virus' intrinsic illness & death. I think it's going to be a long time until the rest of the 1st world allows us to physically interact with them, again.

My immediate biggest fear now, is will we get blowback in the states that did all the hard work to bring our rates down? But let's get real - even CA is having their problems - and it seems they did a lot right.

My more distant fear, is what will occur if we get the anticipated 'second wave' over what appears to be a never-ending 'first wave'? That wasn't the way it was supposed to work. We were supposed to mitigate the first wave, to prepare for a possible second.

Sadly, we just don't seem to have the political will to take-on this virus.

Constant marching and clamoring together is the proven answer.

Why won't we listen ?

The right and left will continue to make political hay from a pandemic thrust on the world by China. Although I don't believe the virus was not intentionally weaponized at first, China definitely weaponized it by: 1) keeping it secret until it was spread to the rest of the world by allowing flights from Wuhan to points in Europe, U.S, etc. while:2) limiting the spread within China by disallowing travel out of Wuhan to the rest of China. They also cornered the market in PPE, even turning freighters back to China, causing shortages in the rest of the world. As an added benefit, the virus has not only killed over 100,000 citizen here in the U.S., but divided the nation even further, as each political wing uses it as a bludgeon on the other. Well done China.

Actually this is how they predicted it would work. They claimed in the begining that the numbers were inevitable and that the only thing we could do is manage the impact by prolonging the timeline that it occurs over. Nobody should be acting surprised, nor should anyone be panicking over it.
What we need to watch is for hospitalizations and fatalaties. These numbers so far have been mostly static. The other thing to keep an eye on is if a herd immunity starts to develop.

Yeah, and that's an average. Some of my friends who are nurses say their hospitals are already at 100% capacity. I feel like we were left without a paddle.

Sadly, by other countries examples, this tragedy could have been avoided. I hope people aren't waiting for a miracle vaccine. Even if we get one, it won't be 100% effective and will require everyone to get it, maybe yearly. Looking at how well Americans took to social distancing and wearing masks I highly doubt we'll get nearly what we need to get heard immunity.

Maybe after November if Trump loses. Maybe a tiny light at the end of the tunnel?

We can do this TOGETHER people !

Fox's decades of poison so united the vast majority of the right in hatred of its caricature of the left that they elected and cheered on the most corrupt president in history, as he spent months lying and denying about COVID, accusing people who said it needed to be taken seriously immediately of hoaxing. And they repeated those claims here. Many still do.

Think about that.

Of course, it's not fair to blame Fox. They sell a product. It's the people who wanted the product we need to worry about.

But after the ball was passed on to us, why did we then drop it? Kick it under the table and then lose it?
Are you really going to put the sole responsibility of Americans' lack of knowledge and willingness to slow the spread of this virus on China?

Other countries did a lot better than us, why? We had all the same knowledge, virologist advice, and support from the world as they did. Why do you think we have had so much death? China? Do you really think this theory is believable or are you just protecting Trump's reputation?

That's a part of the problem, but so's this:

Yeah and how many have to die before then, because people are politicizing a pandemic? :(

I've never, in all my years, thought I'd live to see something like this politicized.

I know right! It's the twilight zone. I thought we all might come together but I was really, really, really wrong.

My work is getting ready to open back up, so we won't be a skeleton staff anymore. I'm concerned, but I'll just have to keep doing what I'm doing. Assuming that I live through it, I will remember the shutdown as the hardest that I have ever worked. I'll also appreciate weekends more from now on.

I have my recall date in July. New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, and California are our most common destinations! Yay!

Unless there is something you can prove inaccurate about my post, yes. BTW, you do know the last sentence of your post, validated the last 2 sentences of my post, right?:doh

I remember when the disease was ravaging Italy, and I was so afraid for them.

Look where we are now, compared to Italy. Through today, they've had 240,000 cases, with 35,000 dead. We are 2,600,000 cases, 134,000 dead.

Yes, but it’s really much worse for us if you actually look at where we are NOW. Yesterday we had more than 43,000 new cases, Italy had 175. Most of Europe came out of lockdown with things pretty much under control. In much of the US we came out of lockdown with things getting much worse.

Oh I couldn't agree more. And we are still climbing. Still.

The United States. Still climbing.

What specifically do you want the government to do?

Better testing, tougher mask rules, stricter lockdowns, better support for Americans hurt by the pandemic. (and not a ridiculous proposal like a tax credit for going on vacation during a ****ing pandemic). I'd also like Donald Trump to tell people like YOU to take this ****ing seriously and wear masks. I'd like him to wear a mask himself to show you that it's not some terrible assault on your manhood.

Equally large an issue to the government, is the people. There's two sides to Trump's terrible messaging through all this, and the other side is people stupid enough to listen to him over medical experts. People who hear him say he knows more than (insert experts on current subject) and then they believe him, even when it is comically obvious it isn't true. These people think wearing a mask is an assault on liberty but kneeling on someone's neck is fine if the suspect is a bad person. How the **** do you get through to people that stupid AND that monstrous?

Covid is patient.

It'll hang out and wait as long as it takes while we get ready.

Our parents and grandparents are entertaining covid in the parlor meanwhile.

Yes, and there’s this ... 66% of Republicans trust Trump to give us accurate information on the virus while only 51% of Republican’s trust Dr. Fauci. How ****ed up is that? Do they really believe 15 cases will go to zero? Or that it is “dying out” now? How can people be so stupid?

It’s no wonder we can’t tame the virus like most other countries have done now when close to a third of the country think Trump is a more reliable source of virus information than Fauci.
