I do not support arresting them, especially not during the protest. That would only cause the protests to get more out of control. What I would do is track them and use contact tracing, fine them, and impose quarantine the next day. News of that would get out, and we would probably see more protesters follow the guidelines in place.

I can't believe we aren't celebrating - the number of cases is rising in many states, but the overall strength of the virus is weakening, and I'm assuming a majority of the new cases, in general, are mild
That's because we have most people over 50 trapped in their houses so young people can go out and party. It will trickle down when they go home to see the parents, and grandparents helping them pay their bills.

On a good note, now that Trump has left AZ after his COVID party, governor Ducey is acting like he's concerned again. So hopefully the cases will go down. Trump requires a lot of butt licking when he visits these states.

I can't attest to the virus weakening, but in Colorado the great majority of people who contract the virus are surviving.

Yes...that certainly is a good thing.

How are you going to get all those governors to take those steps to protect their citizens when most of those governors won't take steps to protect their citizens during the riots...excuse me, the protests?

Suffice it to say...I'm not all that bothered.
There's roughly a 3 week lag between case and death. If this surge in cases causes a surge in deaths, we won't see it for a couple more weeks.

Hopefully a combination of younger people being affected, summer heat, and better treatment will prevent deaths climbing back yp to 2,000 a day, but we will see.

It's not clear that this is true. It is true however that doctors have learned quite a bit during the last few months and are using better treatments for those showing up in hospitals because of covid-19. It's a little early to begin jumping around and celebrating. We have a long way to go before this is over.

With this current tally today, I think it's fair to say we've lost the battle with the coronavirus. Our state-by-state win/loss/tie record is 2-36-12. Our infection rate is setting new record highs as the pandemic continues to grow larger than ever before.

I don't see it getting better anytime soon. We are not doing what we need to do to safely reopen the economy, and that economic cost will have it's own hellacious effects in addition to the virus' intrinsic illness & death. I think it's going to be a long time until the rest of the 1st world allows us to physically interact with them, again.

My immediate biggest fear now, is will we get blowback in the states that did all the hard work to bring our rates down? But let's get real - even CA is having their problems - and it seems they did a lot right.

My more distant fear, is what will occur if we get the anticipated 'second wave' over what appears to be a never-ending 'first wave'? That wasn't the way it was supposed to work. We were supposed to mitigate the first wave, to prepare for a possible second.

Sadly, we just don't seem to have the political will to take-on this virus.
The only way to safely reopen the economy is to obliterate the economy, after which there won't be any economy left to safely reopen.

The steps for contact tracing and quarantine would be easier if The President and his administration had guidelines in place for contact tracing. Let me know when that happens, and then I can answer your question.

Well, it's time for the government to step up, isn't it? We pay taxes for this ridiculous stuff: Outrageous Things Your Taxes Actually Paid For | Reader's Digest
We also spend a lot of it on the military, but this virus is our fight now. I think the government who spends our money should be spending it in the right place. Protecting businesses, hospitals, and schools during this pandemic so we don't fall apart. They can slowly make the money back from us after this is over. It's not rocket science, it's the willingness to step up.

Our government would rather take the casualties. The whole world thinks America is in a very sad place and we are.

Not to mention the leadership we've had seems to be drummed up from a high school experience Mr. Trump had. Obviously, BULLY states and their people into thinking it's stupid and weak to stop the spread of this virus. It worked, and here we are.

    The guidelines ARE in place.

    Core State Preparedness Responsibilities

    TESTING & CONTACT TRACING

Ability to quickly set up safe and efficient screening and testing sites for symptomatic individuals and trace contacts of COVID+ results
Ability to test Syndromic/ILI-indicated persons for COVID and trace contacts of COVID+ results
Ensure sentinel surveillance sites are screening for asymptomatic cases and contacts for COVID+ results are traced (sites operate at locations that serve older individuals, lower-income Americans, racial minorities, and Native Americans)

    HEALTHCARE SYSTEM CAPACITY

Ability to quickly and independently supply sufficient Personal Protective Equipment and critical medical equipment to handle dramatic surge in need
    Ability to surge ICU capacity

    PLANS

Protect the health and safety of workers in critical industries
Protect the health and safety of those living and working in high-risk facilities (e.g., senior care facilities)
Protect employees and users of mass transit
Advise citizens regarding protocols for social distancing and face coverings
Monitor conditions and immediately take steps to limit and mitigate any rebounds or outbreaks by restarting a phase or returning to an earlier phase, depending on severity

    Access Denied
The most the federal government can do is provide these guidelines and support the state leadership in implementing the guidelines. Trump has done all that.

Actually implementing the guidelines or coming up with their own guidelines is the decision and responsibility of the state leadership. Various states have made a variety of decisions and have a variety of results.
