Florida shattered its daily record for new coronavirus cases Wednesday with more than 5,500 confirmed.

The 5,506 new COVID-19 cases pushed the state's total to 109,014, according to figures released by the Florida Department of Health.
Florida had previously set the daily record of 4,049 COVID-19 cases on Saturday.

Another 44 new deaths related to the virus were confirmed Wednesday, bringing the state's total to 3,281.
Source: (NBC 6 So Florida) Florida Shatters Daily Record With 5,500 New Coronavirus Cases, Passes 109,000 TotalBeen following Florida's growth for over a week and hearing all the fears it is becoming the U.S. epicenter for the pandemic. But after seeing today's number a moment ago, I'm taken back. Let's hope it's a one-day anomaly, because the trend over the past week is quite shocking - to say the least.

Besides 5500 new cases & new 48 deaths, several things jumped-out at me.

1] R0 = 1.4

Whoa! Not good at all. If DeSantis doesn't change the transmission variable to less than unity, and fast, Florida's troubles are going to continue to deepen - badly. And the inevitable rise in deaths will come.

2] Duval 3,419 62

3,500 cases in Duval County alone (62 deceased), where Trump will receive the GOP nomination during the recently moved GOP convention. I'd like to see recent daily data, to see if Jacksonville is suffering the same fate as the other hot areas of the state.

3] The rate of positivity among people tested for COVID-19 across Florida has been higher over the past week than previously, cresting at 15.91% positivity for tests administered Tuesday.

This last is especially troubling. It shows it is not just 'more testing' causing the numbers rise, as DeSantis claim, but rather a larger proportion of the tested population is getting sick - 16%!

If it becomes so, it's very sad. This pandemic epicenter-type growth down there is totally un-necessary. If we can deal with this in one of the largest & densest cities and metro areas of the country, I'm sure FL, AZ, TX could easily handle this if they so desired.

I live in flori-duh, it's up sixty percent in my county. Total winning if I've ever seen it.

With the Republican convention being held here in August, my idiot Governor DeSantis will no doubt fudge the numbers to make them look favorable per orders of his master Trump.

Just think! Trump is bringing the COVID Express to Jacksonville just as things are heating up. Now that's leadership!

With stuff like this happening, what's our government talking about doing?

Paying people to travel. Literally giving people tax credits to go on vacation. Now. In a pandemic. When that pandemic is getting worse than it ever has been.

We're the dumbest country.

Hmmm...how many are in the critical age groups/most at risk?

As always, total numbers don't tell the whole story.

We had a coworker who tested positive a month ago, leading to all of us testing.

After her 14 day quarantine she returned to work none-the-worse.

None of the rest of us tested positive either.

As I've pointed out, this illness is not going to go away...any more than the Flu has since it arrived back in 1918.

Not really. You wouldn't believe the number of young families flocking to Florida. Development - aka first home buyers - is off the charts. The virus is happily meeting its new victims in the bars and on the beaches through a bunch of youth who think it's no big deal. And actually, old people aren't nearly the number of those testing positive as those young social butterflies. The biggest problem that these young folks face is the long term consequences of harboring the virus. Even asymptomatic, it can do organ damage, and it could resurface, the way shingles does. Re: DeSantis: he's young and he's a disaster. Rick Scott - a lot brainier - would have had this problem in the single digits months ago. Thanks!!

Without attempting to panic anyone, I'd consider stocking-up on PPE, food, and provisions, in case this thing does explode and panic-buying breaks out. Hopefully it won't, but I know what we went through up here.

I was personally fine because I have healthcare workers in my family, so we were stocked to the gills with PPE as matter of recourse. They also convinced us to stock up on food & hunker down well before the panic occurred. But I saw what my friends & neighbors went through trying to get provisions once the panic started.

Panic need not be based upon reality. In fact, it often isn't. Psychology simply takes over, so it pays to be ahead of the crowd.

I was starting to branch out a little. Went to a beach that wasn't crowded, so social distancing was possible. I have been going to the gym to avoid further weight gain (lol), but people at my gym just don't care. Very few wear masks, and they just walk around closely together as if everything is normal.

It's sad, really. Even worse when you have leaders in power who either just don't care, or ignore or fudge the data for political purposes.

The question is,

"How many of those tested are spreaders?"

I believe you're leading-up to a nonsense argument. Besides the suffering & death of young and middle aged people, as infection increases it will bleed over to the most at risk individuals.

FL is looking at 1.4 R0. There's no good way to spin that. When other states are not accepting your citizens freely, you've got a problem.

I'm no fan of either, but I think I agree with the bolded. DeSantis is nuts!

Scott is horrible. He's the reason why the FL unemployment system is a mess. Both him and DeSantis are god awful in every aspect.

Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist were both Republican Governors, and were miles ahead of the two idiots that followed them.

Well, I was just speaking to the psychology of panic-buying. Maybe you guys are just too laid-back for it to happen? Or, it will only happen in major metro areas? But IMHO it's far better to be prepared, than not. I may not become a hardcore prepper, but I sure take the idea of "adequate provisions" a helluva' lot more serious since the pandemic started!

Lots of people will die due to politics and utter disregard by these people disregarding common dog,and in failure by their leaders.

3 States are implementing a quartile schedule for States that meet a mathematical model on increases, I think Florida & Texas are 2

not surprising

I like Jeb, to be honest.

Mask are mandatory in Tallahasse now. Police have went around to all the businesses and told them to put up the signs.

So far it looks like to me way less than 50% of customers are complying. I haven't seen anyone turned away for not wearing a mask.

Panic buying definitely happens here, especially during hurricane season lol.

Travel where? The E.U. is threatening to keep us out if we don't get a handle on it, ditto for Australia/New Zealand.

Well, I suppose Brazil may take us!

I was somewhat enjoying seeing emptiness in my cupboards and freezer and I've still been pretty limited in my time out and about. I restocked chicken and beef last week just because it was on sale and can toss on the grill. I've been watching the numbers growing in various states and it makes me think I should restock tp and canned goods just in case. Otherwise I'm fine sitting at home for the rest of the summer and then some. My friends who have followed the magic words of Trump likely wouldn't because their heads would explode were there another stay at home order announced.

You believe wrong.

My argument is that this virus is here to stay.

We need to deal with that reality.
