Anthony Fauci warns of 'anti-science bias' being a problem in US

The White House coronavirus task force has been out of public view as President Donald Trump has shown an urgency to move past the pandemic, downplay recent surges in Covid cases in some states, and get Americans back to work. But the nation's top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has been warning Americans about the risk of further spread of the virus. On Wednesday, Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, joined the US Department of Health and Human Services' podcast "Learning Curve" and gave his expertise on the pandemic and the vaccine development process. He also defended the stay-at-home orders as having saved "millions of lives," and drew attention to anti-science bias and the disproportionate impact the virus is having on the black community. Fauci said "anti-science bias" in the country can be problematic. "One of the problems we face in the United States is that unfortunately, there is a combination of an anti-science bias that people are -- for reasons that sometimes are, you know, inconceivable and not understandable -- they just don't believe science and they don't believe authority," Fauci said.

"So when they see someone up in the White House, which has an air of authority to it, who's talking about science, that there are some people who just don't believe that -- and that's unfortunate because, you know, science is truth," Fauci said. "It's amazing sometimes the denial there is. It's the same thing that gets people who are anti-vaxxers, who don't want people to get vaccinated, even though the data clearly indicate the safety of vaccines," Fauci added. "That's really a problem." Trump has frequently disregarded expert advice -- and often the guidance of his own administration -- during the pandemic. if you look at the data, now that papers have come out literally two days ago, the fact that we shut down when we did and the rest of the world did, has saved hundreds of millions of infections and millions of lives," Fauci said. "And yet, there are those who say, 'You shut down, you did destructive things by disrupting the economy.' And others say, 'Well, if you save so many infections by shutting down, why didn't you shut down two weeks earlier? You could have saved many more lives.'"

Dr. Fauci here is obliquely referring to the anti-science Trump/GOP.

Since Trump won't wear a mask, his supporters have the notion that wearing a mask shows disloyalty to Trump.

The right has moved to be anti-science for quite some time now. This is not new.

Fauci's science has been generally a failure, and not on the mark. Nevertheless, Trump carried out every suggested action that Fauci made to him, immediately. And since modest leftwingers think Trump failed, thus Fauci failed. The models that Fauci and the rest of the SCIENTISTS used were woefully wrong.

Warns?

Hell, we all know that a large contingent of the US, especially in the South, considers science a liberal thang: just another way to take god out of schools and convince everyone to listen to pointy heads in ivory towers.

Is that what Fox is saying?

Confirmation anti-science bias is a real issue in America: anti-vax, creationism, young earth, ID, AGW, flat earth, Obama was a martian, etc.

Wait, Obama was a Martian? I thought he was a Kenyan Muslim Nazi Commie Christian but not the right kind of Christian who did not pick a home church.

The home churched in Mars, Illinois.

Fauci tooting his own horn again ;)

He is one individual, and he is not science

He is a politically slanted scientist with strong ties to the Cuomos, which is evidence from his statement about people resenting "those in authority" - it's like Andrew Cuomo 2.0

No, but you are like a recycled Trump, which is not good for the country.

You, Toby, have not a clue about what you are writing. You are a discredited poster making outrageous statements you can't support. You are literally the poster poster for the OP.

Fauci needs to look more to the ****ty science that shutdowns are based on. A discredited scientist who made outrageously incorrect formulations of past viruses. Focus on that ****, doc.

Science is not self sufficient when it comes to the resources needed to do science. Science is mostly supported by outsiders and is therefore beholden to Government, Industry and to private donations. As such, science is mostly mercenary in terms of being paid to do what is needed to satisfy their benefactors. If you go the wrong way you risk losing support. For example, if you were a biologist working for a company that is big on Erectile dysfunction; ED medicine, but you would prefer research cancer, you better get in line since the direction requested by the benefactors has been set. The mercenary may frown, but he will carry his weight since the pay is good.

If were a scientist for a tobacco company your research will be designed to support the tobacco industry. You do not have the option to go renegade and still use their resources. If you did, you would be out of a job. If you were to dutifully preform the required experiments, but the results were very counter productive to the tobacco cause, this research will never be sent out for publication, even if it was done very well and is well deserving of publication. The deck can be rigged by the benefactors in many ways since they pay the mercenaries to fight the battle they wish to wage.

There are very few scientists who are not beholden, who can do only what they feel is right, apart from political pressure and games. Stark Industries of Iron Man fame is the exception, and not the rule.

It is not coincidence that the majority of funding going into Climate change come from the Globalists leaning Governments, and it goes to those who are with the pro climate change program. This is how you get the preponderance of the data, even if you POV is flawed. Therein also left wing peer pressure to minimize and marginalize any research that was not with the program. This is how data stacking is done. Most of science is mercenary, and is not based on the search for truth and self sacrifice. One can do good science, no matter that the benefactors want. I do not question the science, but I do question the motive; self serving for career advancement and minimal backlash.

As far as government workers and government scientists, career ladders are important, as are budget cycles. Career ladders need constant increases in funding for lateral advancements. It is not coincidence that Dr Fauci is projecting a long term plan for Corona, that just so happens to coincide with the budget cycle. This is not so much about the needs of science, but about the politics of budgeting to maximize funding in the longer term career ladder needs. If he said we can do this in one year, his budget will be less. Efficiency is never rewarded in government.

In terms of climate science, common sense would say that water is the most important feature of earth weather and climate. Water is the material of the oceans, which moderate the climate of the earth. If we did not have the oceans to store heat, the earth would be frozen even with the current CO2 levels. Water can phase separate out out for the gases of the atmosphere to form clouds. This can cool the surface and causes rain and other weather. CO2 is one trick pony and does none of these things. CO2 is what science benefactors have chosen as the center piece. That is mercenary science, since no free ranging scientist, would limit the discussion to one trick. Water is the swiss army knife and far more challenging.

I am a scientist and what is being performed throughout all of science is good science. But this is also mercenary science, since science is not self sufficient but is beholden. The man with the money has the final saying as to where the good science needs to go ,to make it worth his wile.

Thats exactly right. Fauci himself said Trump took his advice at every tur. You cannot argue that Trump failed on this virus without implicating Fauci, yet that is what the dishonest left is trying to do.

Lol. :2razz:

Except in reality Trump pushed Fauci out of the spotlight when he wasn't helping Trump with his reopen agenda or false cure.

That may or may not be true, but the fact remains that Trump picked him to lead his panel and took his advice at every turn. Fauci really has no advice for how to reopen things that have been closed so he isnt of as much value now.

And, as predicted, a scientist says something that a Trump supporter does not like, and is immediately attacked. And, gets blamed for Trump's failures. That statement demonstrates the TRUTH of Fauci's statement about anti-science bias too. and shows that the bias is political in nature (The whine about 'leftwingers' is a strong giveaway). The post shows a highly antiscience bias, and a lack of understanding of science in general. And , the 'Trump carried out every suggested action immediately' is a falsehood too, since despite Fauci's suggestions, Trump is still holding mass rally's.

Ah yes. immedately the people on the right attack Fauci, This is expected, since they can't attack his statements without being shown to be wrong.

Fauci fears Trump just like everybody else in his administration and the GOP. People refer to him as a "national treasure". I think he is a piece of ****! He should have been sounding the alarms for much longer and louder than he did. You can tell he walks on eggshells as he answers questions instead of being upfront and calling it as it is. We need a pitbull to get the message out regarding Corona not a little mouse.

I think it is time to remove Trump from office. I say this because I think he is a threat to our lives. I also say this because I'd prefer someone else go against Biden. I've always hated liberals and now I hate Conservatives. I'm alone in this world.

Ivanka can stay!

Ah yes. Immediately people on the left defend Fauci. This is expected, since they can't support his statements without being shown to be wrong ;)
