New coronavirus losing potency

The average age of the dead is 80 years old too. Over 40% of them were in nursing homes. Let that sink in too.

I cannot speak to the current CV but becoming less lethal/less virulent when a host population dwindles is a common *'strategy' for microbial reproduction. It leaves more hosts alive/alive longer to spread more of the microbe, while in a population where hosts are plentiful and in close contact (fast, easy transmission), the microbe can 'afford' to kill quickly.

*no, there is no 'thought' or 'direction', it's a product of mutations that are more successful when their hosts live long enough to infect a specific number (to that microbe) of other hosts to maintain the survival of the microbe species.

Well, I wasn't being sarcastic so maybe I didn't understand what you wrote. I read it as since America has a lot of hosts it will be stronger. I am genuinely afraid of it, and I don't plan on catching the thing.

I'm mentally not surviving this very well actually. I was germaphobic, to begin with. This is my worst nightmare.

It means that when something runs out of food, it dies. In this case, in order to survive, the virus mutates and adapts so that instead of being more lethal, it becomes milder so that its hosts (people) feel better and walk around more and die less...giving it more chances to continue infecting.

Here in the US, we've sheltered in place & social distanced and removed so many 'hosts' (people) that in order to survive, perhaps this virus did this...adapted to become milder.

This is the barely coherent and grammatically inept speech of a man who desperately wants to be able to claim that he "cured coronavirus."

That's it, in a nutshell. When we do get a handle on this crisis, he wants to be able to pull out footage and declare "I called it! I said use this! I said try this! I told them to do this, it was my idea!" He's just doing it with lots of stupid stuff because he doesnt want to miss an opportunity. He's afraid 'the big one' will be mentioned and he wont get credit for it.

It's all about declaring himself the savior of the cv crisis and we'll hear all about it, esp in his campaign. (Which is basically each of his press briefings these days) --- Lursa

Sometimes when you try to oversimplify things that arent simple, it's not worth it.

OTOH, if you try the original version (also in that post) it might make more sense to you.

Or...it might be too complex for you even in the overly simplified version

Here my friend, since December our world has had a total of 23 deaths per One Million population. Now, if you had one million dollars in the bank and you lost a $20 bill, would you cancel Christmas and hide your family in your home? No, you would not, you’re not a complete moron. However, men will reject truth when their acts prove that they’ve been duped. You’ve been fooled my friends. 23 per One Million people that’s it. 23 per 100,000,000. Wake up

Africa a population of 58 million, CV19 mortality - 1 per 2 Million
Australia 26 million population, 1 per 400,000 deaths

You really need to stop. You’re embarrassing yourselves.

OK, so you are in the 2nd category, "it's too complex for you, even the overly simplified version."

Got it.

Your analogy had nothing to do with the subject of the OP or my explanation.

I sympathise; many people here in the UK are suffering genuine mental health problems as a result of two months of enforced lockdown. As a medically vulnerable 67 year-old this thing terrifies me too. I have barely left my house for two months. If those people who scoff and pretend there's nothing to be concerned about want to call me weak or scared they're welcome. I'll be the one left alive while their stupidity and irresponsibility may well be their undoing.

Do you understand the meaning of 'so far' as it pertains to your numbers? You ain't seen nothing yet mate.

The problem is we did shelter for a bit then people couldn't take it, they felt abused. Now we are not, at all, and I see maybe 1% of people in my city wearing masks and social distancing.

Therefore, yes, I misunderstood your logic because, in my state, your logic works against it. The virus has plenty of hosts here who are almost begging for COVID, people are partying together, playing together, working together, and everything is opened back up. Jury duty, full of unmasked people within arms reach. And the kicker is the virus numbers are rising rapidly in my state, and we lack PPE.
You wouldn't even know a pandemic was going on.

So from your posts, everyone in my state are getting a pretty bad case of COVID then, we have plenty of hosts licking the lamp posts. I will not venture out into this mess, no way.

If this is true, it's wonderful news and sounds like the virus has mutated into a much weaker, less lethal strain. If this trend continues, there shouldn't be a devastating second wave.

There are nine identified distinct strains of Covid 19. Some are less predatory than others. Some are more predatory than others. Which should we bet on?

The Killer Hornets are coming. And hungry rats are getting more aggressive since the lockdown started. They want your pizza!

Nope

This is an aggressive virus, very good at adapting to its host. Wishful thinking

Another online, expert epidemiologist heard from.

Actually, I've read there are 12 different strains. I neither wrote the story or have any idea how many strains were affecting Italy with extreme impact. So, bet on what you want.

They are certainly providing a prime transmission environment for it.

I'm sorry this has been so stressful for you. Please take care of yourself because if there is a 2nd wave, it could be worse.

More make for more interesting wagers. I make my bets through the equities and commodity markets. Less risk than bookies.

I hope this is true. I was already waiting to see if there will be a Memorial Day Weekend spike, and now I will be curious whether all the people protesting unmasked have created a problem for themselves and others.

I find it highly likely for there to be some spikes in about 2 weeks.

I only know what's going on in my area of the country and the numbers in NY are inching lower every day. In my own state adjacent to New York, the only deaths from Covid-19 over the past few days have been in nursing homes. That's great news.

There were two elderly people living in nursing homes in Connecticut, a man 104 and a woman 105, both were infected with Covid-19 and both survived. The woman had survived being infected with the Spanish flu in 1918 so this is her second pandemic survival story, first time when she was very young and this one when she's very old. There have been others in Kentucky and New Jersey that were well over 100 years old and survived Covid-19.

I just heard yesterday that my nephew who is a pharmacist, and his girlfriend who is also a pharmacist, have both been diagnosed with Covid-19. They do not work at the same pharmacy. They are both 28 years old. I don't know how ill they are, I've only just learned they have it. But they're young and should be fine.

The riots in NYC is sure to cause a spike. It's been down to just above 50 a day, but I would not be surprised if in NYC especially if it double or more in two weeks.

I so hope you're wrong.

I so hope you're wrong.

I hope so too. However, the virus does not care. It is a purely mechanical/chemical reaction, and crowds of people shouting is one way to spread. The virus does not care about poltics, social injustice, 'freedom'. It will just spread where it has the opportunity to spread.

That's exactly right. All those people coughing in the teargas....

And, if they are infected, out the virus. Oh, shouting chants expels a lot of virus too.

I dont think folks understood the OP.
