(CNN)President Donald Trump remains intent on holding an Independence Day celebration in Washington, DC, this year. The city's leaders and Democratic lawmakers aren't so sure.
But Washington's mayor reiterated Wednesday that a parade in the nation's capital had been scrapped.

"The Independence Day parade has already been canceled," Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, told reporters. "I don't know another way to say it, the parade has been canceled. Our big concern would be around how to manage fireworks and we will continue to work with Interior on that."

The White House on Wednesday said Trump was still planning on holding some type of celebration but did not specify any details.

"As President Trump has said, there will be an Independence Day celebration this year and it will have a different look than 2019 to ensure the health and safety of those attending," said White House spokesman Judd Deere. "The American people have shown tremendous courage and spirit in the fight against this global pandemic just as our forefathers did in the fight to secure our independence, and both deserve celebration on America's birthday this year."

I thought this was an interesting article describing the conflict between attempting to regain some semblance of "normal" life, while still responsibly dealing with the ongoing pandemic that will be with us for a long time.

So, where do I personally stand on this issue? I think we should make every reasonable effort to try to regain "normalcy", and let the President attempt to safely lead us in celebrating America's most patriotic holiday. But I would deffer the final decisions concerning the safety details of the implementation up to local government.

I would love nothing more than to see the Democratic Mayor of D.C. and the Republican President - work together united in presenting an event that represents our nation. We need that symbolism.

The DC mayor, M. Bowser was on the shows this morning tamping down the notion due to the CDC opening guidelines not having been met yet and not sure if they would be met in the five weeks remaining......

Edit: sorry for the run-on sentence.........:3oops:

No grand celebration will be permitted in DC for Trump this year.

Hah! I just edited my run-on too (the last sentence).

Thing is, unless Trump can't resist the urge to put on a big show, there's no reason something symbolic & appropriate can't be done in D.C. It may look quite different than we're used to, but that's besides the point. Could you imagine the two of them standing side-by-side at the event together, basking in the patriotic unity of pulling it off? Can you imagine the effect on the country? Even if only briefly?

Yeah, I'm sure I'm dreamin'. But Trump's not going to get his Republican convention in the way he likes, and neither is he going to get his Fourth of July celebration in the way he likes. So who knows? Maybe, he'll learn to compromise? I'm sure he'll do something to mark the occasion. He has to. And Washington is the place to go it.

Trump changed NASA to MAGA during his remarks after the launch. Everyone calls Biden demented, but Trump can’t read from a teleprompter w/o butchering the words.

There is nothing like spending July 4th in Washington, DC on the mall. Can't get anymore American than that.
A giant celebration for the nations birthday. From the US capitol to the Lincoln memorial there are wall to wall people.
People from across the country and cross the world. Frisbee's being thrown, Soccer games being played, Maybe a little touch football.
Blankets spread on the mall for a picnic lunch. The view of the US Capitol is great, also the Lincoln memorial.
Late afternoon the 4th of July concert at the capitol will start. To end with Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture to include cannon fire.
Then what everyone waits for the grand firework show. It's spectacular!! Yes I hope there will be a 4th of July celebration in Washington.

I very much agree with your sentiments. But the event described in your post is obviously not going to happen in our current active virus environment.

Yes, some event should go on. The symbolism is too great. We can't let this virus beat us. It's up to the President & Mayor to find a way.

BTW - I regret never having attended. It's on my bucket list.

Try your best to go! It's an experience of a life time!
The mall is a giant area, just spread out, wear a mask if need and enjoy!

I have lived in the area a large part of my life. I’ve been more than once. This was years before 9/11 and the accompanying security measures in place. There are pros and cons. Washington’s humidity in July is fierce and the next day the trash left behind is a sorry sight. We have boated up the Potomac river as well, but also before security got so stringent.

Thanks! I indeed will go - eventually. But I think I'll sit this one out ... no planes or large crowds for me for now ...

Before the earlier economic collapse, my city put on a world class show that drew nationally and even internationally. It used to draw in excess of 1M. And having been in the local boating scene at the time, I'm aware the best seats in the house are on the water! It really was the best way to see the show. Accept you've got to be careful to not get hit, and you get tied-up going in-and-out of the locks a (really) long time. The locks were the only negative, in what was a very positive experience!

Some of my non-boating friends - today - think I'm joking when I tell them the city had boat groupies. But it's true! And the Fourth, along with Venetian Night (flotilla), were the highest in demand nights back then. The docks & marinas were filled with the unaffiliated, hoping to catch a ride. They'd even bring stocked coolers to further bribe their way onboard. With most of us single at the time, the social aspects were not lost on my buddies. Our boat was booked months - if not a year - in advance!
