I think what the Swedish would argue, right or wrong, is that they are only getting their deaths out of the way early and that their peer countries will have as many case fatalities per-capita that they have, but they will just stretch them out over a year and hurt their economies much more so in the process.

Sweden is still far off from herd immunity and if a treatment / vaccine is developed soon gaining herd immunity through infections would not be needed
If somebody comes up with a vaccine or much better treatment then Sweden is going to look horrible.

How successful in history have humans been at developing vaccines for any coronavirus? In fact name just ONE!

But that is illogical, the Swedish economy is dependent on the rest of Europe and their neighbors. It will not help them that their economy is not shut down, but who is going to buy their products. Who is going to worry about buying a volvo or buying from Ikea if most Ikea's are closed in Europe. Or people just do not have the money to buy Swedish products.
The only thing that is still functioning is their bars/restaurants/clubs, but is that worth the high death rate? They were doing it to get herd immunity but the last reports I read that is not happening.
They are still getting slammed while other EU countries are slowly opening up their economies because the spread is very minimal. Today in the Netherlands we had 8 deaths compared to 234 deaths at it's peak. We are opening up slowly, movie theaters are opening up, restaurants, bars, vacation parks, holiday parks, amusement parks, zoo's, schools, museums, etc. etc. etc. etc.
Sweden's neighbors will also be opening up slowly and reaching the same state that Sweden is now, but with far far far fewer deaths than Sweden has.
But most likely, no one will have a vaccine for a year or more. I am glad we aren't doing the experiment that Sweden is, but I am also glad that someone is.
I am not saying it's working, I am saying that's their argument. Economically, they are in the same shape as everyone else.
