I'll post screens of CNN.com's depiction of people NOT WEARING masks. Obviously this will encourage their readers to not wear masks. So far it's not looking good. Is this what we are to look up to for guidance in these trying times?

I don't even wear a mask at Holloween

I don't need no stinking mask!

"Is this what we are to look up to for guidance in these trying times?"

Yeah. Like our mask-less leader by example, the sociopathic, megalomaniac, Public Health Threat-in-Chief, Donald J. Trump, out playing his fiddle on the golf course while Rome burns, a wartime leader ignoring the dead and dying of today and the war deaths of the past while the nation looks on and He watches His slice cut right.

while Rome burns,

While Rome Burns?

You mean the self infliction?

It's like 2.5 million people die in the U.S. yearly(Normal)?

And this plague which we self destructed ourselves and created another 2 TRILLION more in the hole is going on 100,000 deaths?

Anybody that looks to media and government for any sort of guidance at all is very easily led, perhaps incapable of independent thought.

Be smart
Social distance
Wash your hands
KEEP YOUR HANDS AWAY FROM YOUR FACE.
Protect our seniors and the rest of us go back to work.

Protests against individual state shelter-at-home orders have drawn widespread media coverage throughout the country, however it seems those pushing for lifting such order represent a small minority of Americans.

Polls have consistently shown that the majority of people in the US do not want to relax social distancing guidelines or lift shelter-at-home orders until more is done to combat the effects of Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Why kill the elderly just so Trump can get reelected?

No, we could have protected the elderly from the beginning

Instead we self destructed ourselves

How do you propose protecting the elderly?

If they live in nursing homes, there are multiple vectors for infection to enter the home. From people working in the home, who have families, friends etc. If one worker gets infected, the home could be infected quite easily. So the workers would have to be protected from getting infected. That would require isolation for themselves and their families, unlikely to occur as most would not accept that as a condition of employment (the costs might be too high to be able to). For those living at home with occasional assistance, anyone coming to help them could be infected, requiring isolation for them as well

Without working hard to restrict the spread of the epidemic in the general population it would be nearly impossible to protect the elderly. Sweden was"surprised" at how Covid 19 effected their elderly and nursing homes. The only people who should be surprised by that are idiots who did zero planning and projections on it

If they live in nursing homes,

It's the people that take care of them that should be wearing the masks etc...

Is it True the Gov Cuomo put infected people in nursing Homes?

Holy ****!

Great, so the person who takes care of the elderly wear masks. What about their family? Their family could catch it, and spread it to the person providing the care. So now the family has to wear masks. What about the coworkers of the spouse and classmates of the kids? Any of those people could catch it and pass it on to the family who passes it on to the caregiver, who passes it on to one patient who then passes it on to the other people in the nursing home.

You know the way it actually happened.

I wear a mask when I am in public when I am visibly passing someone working or who areceldely or with children or servng me out of respect for them. As a tool to prevent the virus I know it has severe limitations. To me it is a symbol for many things, fear, omedical ignorance, lack of civility. It has taken on many meanings. Given how threatened some people feel especially those working it's not too much for me to acknowledge their fears. People working I believe are entitled to respect. It is the only way I can show it. Otherwise in the open I prefer distancing.

Masks do not black the transmission of the virus. They stop fluid from sneezes or blood or other physical sources that may contain the virus but not all of the virus. The best splash protection are plastic face masks but they are not practical for many.

The bottom line is distancing and frequent hand washing are more crucial. Masks are important for front line workers exposed to sneezing, coughing, bleeding, vomiting, breathing or physical
contact...but they are one of many protocols. They do not stand alone as being effective.

Bottom line is physical contact with contagious persons or their fluids is the biggest risk factor.

Where is YOUR mask?

they hand them out at work, and i have a couple in my car. also, my parents gave me some. we wear masks because we aren't detestable idiots.

Ain't no "perhaps" to it.

Where's my mask? On, every time I leave the house. I don't wish to make anyone sick, and I hope we can bring this pandemic to an end.

So your shocked that CNN is posting old stock photos that have people not wearing a mask? Hell one of your pics literally says, "VINTAGE PHOTOS".

There are so many reasons to wear that mask, especially if you want to reopen the economy. You have to protect the vulnerable, and the people who are paid to protect the vulnerable by serving them and the larger community because this cost of massive death is more than we are willing to tolerate. That mask is just one tool of admittedly limited value, but it is a concrete visible useful land un-invasive tool, that reminds us of the other ways we need to help protect each other. When we wear it, we remind ourselves and each other that we need to stay further apart, wash our hands more often and more deliberately as well.

You simply will not get a rebound in the economy if a third of the population is too scared to walk into the malls, the theaters, the sports arenas, the shops, the churches, and the events which involve commerce, tourism and exposable non essential income. Businesses with brick and mortar based customers (read older), that hope to gain back their customers back, have got to get these customers to wear masks so they don't scare other customers away. Now they can do it with soft sell tactics, or by providing discounts to those who are willing ( wear a mask, get 5% off your purchase) or they can re-write their signs to say 'No shoes, no shirt, no mask, no service, but they are going to need to get those customers to stop worrying about the guy coughing and sneezing who is standing in the middle of the aisle, so they can relax, enjoy themselves and make 'impulse buys' or they are toast!

Turning this 'mask' into a political or cultural war, only serves to get politicians more money in their war chests, and media more drama for their ratings. Once the election results are in, brick and mortar businesses won't care whether the new normal is masked or not, they will care if their customers keep avoiding going out and about because we keep having this virus killing people and constant visible reminders that nobody cares which is what the unmasked customers represents. They will be seen as a little dirtier, a little more selfish, and stores that have a lot of those, will lose those who cannot afford to take greater risks.

Just to be sure here. The word 'vintage' does not refer to the style of the mask, but to the time frame the picture was taken in or represented. I will stipulate that a year ago and prior, people in this country did not feel any need to wear masks and photographs that reflect those years will not have a whole lot of masks regardless of ideology. I will also stipulate that the wearing of a mask is not the only tool that can ensure a reduced risk of transferring viruses.

Those photos show a cultural sea change in expectations and social responsibility in response to this pandemic.
