Brazil jumps to world No. 2 in coronavirus cases, behind the U.S.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Brazil became the world No. 2 hotspot for coronavirus cases on Friday, second only to the United States, after it confirmed that 330,890 people had been infected by the virus, overtaking Russia, the Health Ministry said.

Brazil registered 1,001 daily coronavirus deaths on Friday, taking total deaths to 21,048, according to the Health Ministry.

In Sao Paulo, the worst hit city, aerial video showed rows of open plots at the Formosa Cemetery as it rushed to keep up with demand.

So much for the virus going away due to hot weather. There's not a lot of cold days in Brazil.

Little wonder. Bolsonaro is essentially a latino Trump, and even uses the same terms and propaganda as Trump. Today, he called Covid - "a little flu".

Check out these excerpts from the article. Tell me if they, 'ring a bell'?

The former army captain has seen his poll ratings drop, hurt by his opposition to social distancing measures, support of the unproven remedy chloroquine, and tussles with experienced public health officials.

The true number of cases and deaths is likely higher than the figures suggest, as Latin America’s top economy has been slow to ramp up testing.

Since the outbreak began, Bolsonaro has lost two health ministers, after pressuring them to promote the early use of anti-malarial drugs like chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine. Several high-profile public health experts have also left. Many have been replaced by soldiers.

On Wednesday, Interim Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello, an active-duty army general, authorized new guidelines for the wider use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in mild cases.

Any of this sound familiar?

60's and 70's are "hot weather"?

well in Fla they were setting temp. records in March and Apr. and the CV rate was going up and up
high 80's low to mid 90's
so so much for " Hot Weather " killing it off
and in NY it was in the 40's or less , snow in May, so much for the cold weather killing it off
doesn't look like the Temps. matter
have a nice day

Well I believe that their President tried to blow this off as a simple flu, and their hospitals have become overwhelmed in the process.

Just like a lot of ours did
Have a nice day

I wonder if he has a hot daughter!

Covid-19 has hit the indigenous peoples living in the Amazon rain forests particularly hard. It's wiping out entire tribes. The poor people in Brazil are getting ill with coronavirus and have no other alternative to remain at home, self-treat and hope for the best. And yes, as Chomsky said, Bolsonaro is mishandling this pandemic in Brazil just as Trump has done here in the U.S. Thank God for the good sense and backbones of the governors that have had to take this situation into their own hands without much government support having to beg, plead and threaten for the little assistance they've received.

It pretty much just got there. It's a dense place. A lot of poverty. It all makes sense.

Brazil has a few dense cities. Overall it is not a dense country. The population is very spread out. Also it did not just get there.

That man like Trump is a nut job
Brazil will over the next few months or so surpass the US for fatality rates

Relative to the rest of the world it has. I'm not saying it showed up last week.

It was in Brazil around the same time it was in the U.S, possibly earlier. It took longer for it to go crazy because Brazil has a spread out population.

all too familiar.

It's winter in Brazil right now. You know, southern hemisphere and all...

It's actually kind of cold where I am.

Taylor already pointed that out. Somehow, I associated Brazil with tropical year round warmth. Guess not.

My neighbor told me the other day that most viruses die when the temperature hits 95 degrees. (I have no idea where-in-the-hell-he-heard-that) I had to bite my tongue to keep from saying " Oh, you mean like 98.6 degrees"? He's a decent chap but..well.. :)

Some would say the US is dense

Dang! I thought Brazil was tropical.

Brazil is a huge country, the largest land mass on the continent of S. America, the fifth largest country in the world. It's very close in size to the U.S., but the weather varies just as ours does depending on where you are.

Look to social media as to where many get their opinions/knowledge

I'm probably just used to seeing all of the parades and partying on tv. You know better than me.

A friend of mine was moving to Peru in early March so I was following how things were going on the Corona world map. It didn't seem so bad compared to the rest of the world. I didn't realize how spread out Brazil is so that makes sense regarding it's spread.

Little to no health care, massive slums, nutbar as President, what could go wrong
