US has three months to prepare for second Covid-19 wave say scientists

A group of nine leading scientists who advised President Barack Obama has warned that the US has just three months to rebuild its stockpile of emergency medical equipment if it wants to be prepared for a second wave of coronavirus in the fall. In a seven-page report, whose lead author was the White House science adviser for both Obama terms, the experts fault the Trump administration for failing to replenish the Strategic National Stockpile in preparation for a pandemic just like the one we’re living through now. 3 months. Does anyone believe Trump will take time from his reelection shenanigans to prepare for COVID round #2?

I certainly don't. Trump is betting all his chips on the economy. If he wins in November he'll call it a mandate, pandemic be damned.

If he loses, the tens of thousands of additional COVID dead will then be Joe Bidens problem.

Vote for your Democrat candidate for US Senate on November 3[sup]rd[/sup]

and then Joe Biden will somehow make the death rate go up

Re: US has three months to prepare for second Covid-19 wave say scientists

Why 3 months? Should not it be more like 1 month that we start spiking again after reopenings... Or is it because reopenings are gradual, but even then we should see an increase by July.

Update: I dug in and went to the source.

Unfortunately, the only thing they seem to be basing the 3-month projection is ...

"It is possible that the 2020 phase of the COVID-19 epidemic will decrease during the late spring, but it also may well be that there is a resurgence in the fall."

I hope someone can correct me if I missed why they are thinking 3 months...

You have to Hope and Pray there are ‘competent’ officials behind the scenes dealing with the Economy, Health, and Education. Even with Functionality, we’d still need Thoughts and Prayers.

With Pro Leagues and semi-pro leagues starting on June 1, ‘we’ll see’. They won’t look at Denver and PhIladelphia during the ‘Spanish’ flu for, and then use ‘safety precautions’. Insane.

MLB unresolved. More states getting worse than better. NFL drives the Sports World. Pressure to start filled stadiums’ is just shear lunacy.

Well, is Cuomo still requesting the 40,000 or so ventilators?

If not, then he's either not believing that 2nd wave story or he's hoping for killing off another bunch of "oldies". /s

"...

but it also may well be that there is a resurgence in the fall. Preparation for such a resurgence needs to be initiated now. "
"

I simply interpret it to mean that we need to start immediately preparing (coordinating supply chains etc) for a possible seasonal resurgence now, rather than later. Since there could be another wave in fall (~three months from now).
Seeing as the current administration is constantly blaming bare cupboards, without addressing the issue in 3 years, perhaps it would be a good idea to follow their advice and prepare for this uncertainty ASAP.

Re: US has three months to prepare for second Covid-19 wave say scientists

No doubt there will be future breakouts but now that we know what we are dealing with and who the vulnerable are we are now prepared. Wherever the breakout, a small area will likely be quarantined not the entire state.

We will no longer be short of PPE as we were in the beginning when China was hoarding all of it even though it was produced by American based companies as we are now producing ventilators, respirators, and all medical PPE right here in the U.S.. After China threatened to halt sending our medications to the U.S., drug producers are gearing up to produce our drugs here in the U.S. The biggest lesson throughout all of this is the need to produce all things health related here within our country.

We have had two months to evaluate the stats from all the states and the number one glaring fact is the greatest percentage of all deaths occurred in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. In Ohio, over 90% of all deaths occurred in seniors often with one or more underlying health issue. 60% of those deaths resulted from exposure in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. There are other states that were far worse. For seniors, life is fragile. The effort of every state should be to protect them the best as possible. That doesn't mean forcing them to live a life of a hermit but assist them in having everything they need to help protect themselves when going out in public. Things like masks, hand sanitizer, disposable gloves. And the fragile seniors need to take personal responsibility to protect themselves as well as those who care for them. I personally think it would be a good thing to allow seniors and the vulnerable to do their grocery shopping during restricted hours reserved for just them. I think doctor offices should set up some kind of system to keep the vulnerable out of a busy waiting room full of sick people.

Anyone who has had a year or two of high school biology know all about all the things that surround us daily that are invisible but could make us very sick. My two youngest grandchildren have been in isolation for 10 weeks. Not playing with any friends and both their parents are working from home. Their groceries and prescriptions have been delivered. The kids came down with a virus. My granddaughter , our youngest came down with a virus that sent her to Children's Hospital by her pediatrician. The child could not walk. They were baffled and did not have a clue what it could be after countless tests. But it is contagious because her older brother came down with it too but in a milder form. They are both doing better and my granddaughter can walk. My point is even if you quarantine you still can get something.

Re: US has three months to prepare for second Covid-19 wave say scientists

He's announced there won't be any shutting down for a second wave. What was the point of the first? A gamble that he has a better chance of winning despite any skyrocketing death toll with better economic numbers. He is obviously to blame for his months of lying and denying, which guaranteed a much bigger outbreak in the states than there would have been. But, it is unfortunately also true that we mustget back to more economic activity. We very well may be heading into a depression. Repeated shutdowns of all non-essential businesses could produce a terrible domino effect, and it is no exaggeration to say that a true Great Depression will also get people killed.

I can only hope businesses can work out ways of changing operations but stay in business. One plus might be that in restaurants, tables are six feet apart. Like it used to be when I was young, for the most part. I'll pay more per plate to have space. I'm ****ing sick to death of having my table be 6" or 10" from the tables on either side of ours. I'm sick to death of the downright roar in most bar-restaurants these days. Too many people in too small a space.

I'd hope we can more intelligently do it next time, now that we know exactly what it looks like. Which businesses. Where. But this is Trump. You know his incompetent ass isn't going to get any alternative protections prepared.

Ah well, he can't order states not to take precautions.

President Donald Trump on Thursday said “we are not closing our country” second wave

Is this the same group who told us 2 million plus would be dead in the 1st wave?

The paper is from Obama supporters? Understand what is going on now? :peace

Considering that Trump repeatedly likes to reference that as a source of current information, one would think you would be disputing him from continuing to perpetuate something overwhelmingly acknowledged as revised to a much lower ceiling. BTW it's not the first group that made that model, not even the U.S. Surprised it's so latched onto, regardless.

"During his COVID-19 briefing yesterday, President Donald Trump suggested that the control measures implemented so far should keep the number of deaths from climbing above 100,000 in the United States. Although that is "a horrible number," he said, the death toll otherwise could be "up to 2.2 million deaths and maybe even beyond that."

Indeed, the professionals better be competent, because the confirmation anti-science and anti-medical covidiots will drive us into our graves.

Disagree, round 2 will be upon us sooner, with the States all reopening the virus will have a field day spreading among us, especially those that seem to believe they are bullet proof.
Will trump deal with, of-course not, he hasn't really dealt with round 1. Will the Governor's deal with it, some will others will take their marching orders from the donald no matter how many die.
Come November the voters are not going going to be in a good mood and the Repubs and trump will pay the price.

Why dont you take this opportunity to spell out exactly what you want Trump to do so we dont have to listen to your endless Monday MOrning Quarterbacking should the second wave arrive.

So elite and privileged. You should demand TWELVE feet of separation!

refill the national stockpile, listen to his advisors, and keep his mouth shut

Thats what you HOPE happens. Georgia opened up and there was no spike, but that didnt cause you to re-evaluate your position. Democrat led states are opening up as well because they know the anti science leftist position of keeping non-essential businesses closed indefinitely so that Trump loses is not sustainable.

refill the national stockpile, listen to his advisors, and keep his mouth shut

All based on Common Sense, so that means he won't do any of them.

Re: US has three months to prepare for second Covid-19 wave say scientists

Are these the same experts that predicted 2 million dead?

Should?

How exactly has our situation changed in regards to this virus?

Is it less contagious? Do more than maybe 10% of us have immunity to it? Do its carriers now all show symptoms?

Is diagnostic testing in place? Contact tracing?

Did someone send the virus a letter asking it nicely to stop making people sick so the economy can be pretty for the election?

I really don't understand why so many people seem to think we aren't in almost the exact same situation we were in when trump decided to try to wish it away for two months.

What would I like him to do?

What works.

What gave South Korea their outcomes as opposed to ours. Pandemic SOP.

They never had to shut down completely, are mostly back to normal. Because they got ahead and stayed ahead. They were never forced by wishful inaction into mitigation, as we were.

As I'm sure this is next:

SK has a sixth of our population on 1% of our land mass. So 1300 per square mile compared to our 94. About the same density as Nashville over the entire country.

As population density correlates to infection spread, we have the advantage here.

We have almost exactly twice the GDP per capita of SK. So we are twice as rich.

Advantage US.

We are reportedly the most technologically advanced nation in medicine. As well as the tech necessary to trace contacts etc.

Advantage US.

SK does have recent prior experience dealing with outbreaks.

So that gives them the advantage of containment measures not being a new thing to them. Something they've had to do before and know works.

And last but not least they are a capitalist constitutional representative republic, modeled on our system. They do have universal healthcare.

This isn't an advantage or disadvantage but is mentioned to avoid the "they're different!" dismissal that I've seen when SK comes up to try to dismiss their success:

11.6k cases/264 deaths

All of the examples I see from conservatives only include other losers, no winners.

SK is a winner.

And there is no material reason we couldn't have done better.

Except for trump.
