What countries are the real “****holes” when it comes to COVID response?

These graphs show five of the worst.

No suprise for four. Mexico, Brazil, Russia, India. All impoverished and developing nations, often with a history of not really caring about their people.

Who’s the fifth?

The USA.

This is the worst avoidable public health disaster in US history. It’s patently obvious.

And its due to incompetence at the top.

...and given the logarithmic nature of the graphs, the magnitude of America's blundering is muted. Actual results are worse than they appear.

But if we stop testing and only listen to alternative facts, then everything is great.

I just saw this picture of the 2020 Republican National convention. Good for them; respecting social distancing.

Are you entirely sure that China doesn't belong on the list?

We're the third largest country in the world, population wise. To even things out, divide the population by a million and get the number of deaths per million.

Deaths per million population

Italy 508
UK 472
France 408
America 247

We're kind of spread out in some places and that makes it harder for the virus to feed, so that's an advantage.

Coronavirus Update (Live): 4,245,994 Cases and 286,736 Deaths from COVID-19 Virus Pandemic - Worldometer

..and, before people want to say ... look at Italy, look at France .... bear in mind that many of the European countries have lassoed the problem and are actually getting ahead of it. Deaths in the US continue to rise. With a fixed denominator and an open numerator, we are very like to be in Italy territory (500+ deaths per million - or 160,000 American deaths) soon. By most measures, the US had the most pathetic response to this. Its time to America Great Again as we are currently inept and pathetic. Its time to Dump Trump.

Are you entirely sure that China doesn't belong on the list?

... ah, our Mississippi .... If there is someone worse than us, then we aren't so bad. Case in point, even Trump supporters are ok with pathetic as long as someone else is worse.

It could be that putting a dim-witted gameshow host in charge of the federal government was a bad idea. Tens of millions out of work, tens of thousands dead. Yeah, could be.

I believe California soundly eclipses MS on most of the 'worst of' lists now, including education, poverty level, and certainly quality of life issues like crime and homelessness. But nvm, my point was simply that any list that purports to measure countries that have failed its citizens at preventing Covid 19 that doesn't include China, is kind of dishonest from the get go. Don't you think?

Good catch, and excellent point!

This is similar to those that claim the common flu kills 40K a year, so therefore 60-80K Covid is not so bad. Well, plot over time the skyrocketing two month exponential Covid function that was going nearly straight up, superimposed over the long slow gradual slope of the Flu over a 12 month period! The results of such a graph are astonishing. Then remind yourself, the spectacular Covid exponential rise is going-on despite extreme shutdown & mitigation the literally decimated our country!

I don't have that graph handy, but I have seen it. It is truly something to behold. Everyone needs to know basic math if they are to understand the physical & biological world around them.

California's problems are manifestations of wealth inequality. I have been both places (ok, I lied, Mississippi is one of the 5 states I have never been to, but I have been in every state around it). I would much rather be California than Mississippi. No one is going to cite California as an example of a loser state, it by itself would be the world's 5 or 6th largest economy; Mississippi, OTH (and even Mississippi has its virtues, but as a rule, its a loser state.)

Perhaps China did fail it citizens, but who cares. We are Americans and our federal government screwed up the response to the virus big time. It doesn't matter if we had the worst response, we had an pathetic response, which is the fundamental point. You cannot refute the argument that the American response was pathetic by injecting the notion that someone was worse.

We will never know how many covid-19 deaths there are since corpses are not tested and many have been instructed to list any death that MAY have been caused by or affected by covid-19 to be counted as a covid-19 death.

Imagine how much worse it would be if Trump hadn't done as much as he did so soon.

He's setting himself up in the same context with the economy. He's saying that unemployment could likely hit 25% and we'll be close to a great depression. That way, anything less than either he can say that everybody was saying it was expected, we were going into a depression and I saved the country from a depression. He'll say anything. He has so far.

Fair point. We also need to look at the mortality rates too, where we were around 4+% which is not so good, but not a disaster as much as some. But in some places like DET & NYC, I've seen as high as 10% which is atrocious. I don't have links to formatted data, but one can poke around on sites like Johns Hopkins.

Got that list of things tRUMP did to share with us all?

I bet not.

He did stop Chinese nationals from coming into the country in Jan.
Other than that, I don't know what else he did to slow the spread, ie flatten the curve.

15 will go to ZERO soon.
It will magically disappear.
Those are the comments made, so I don't think he as of the mind set to address the future problem.

That is the way death certificates work. The actual cause of death is listed as the primary cause and agrievating conditions included as contributing factors.

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/misc/hb_cod.pdf (see page 10)

What is your point? Deaths overall are WAY up in the 1st half of 2020. The prevailing thought is the many Covid deaths were actually attributed to something else. IWO, the actual covid death count is likely higher than reported.

Would that make you feel better?

It would certainly lend credibility to the list, and then I'd feel more trusting of it. So yeah, it would make me feel better.

Is China your yardstick for a government to aspire to?

Do you have a self awareness deficit? The DNC and its supporters are mouthpieces, in some instances paid mouthpieces, for the CCP. Their most trusted news sources like the Washington Post for example, are owned by sweat-shop magnates who rely on China. The DNC's game plan for America is to turn it into a nation of low skilled, low paid workers who eek out a bare existence at companies like Amazon. This is the literally what they're driving at! Where have you been the past 30 years friend?

Waiting for any of you to explain what doctors wear inferior surgical masks rather than N95s? I guess they WANT to infect patients and get infected themselves, huh? It certainly has NOTHING to do with how restrictive N95s quickly become. Rather, it is that doctors don't really know anything about infectious diseases. Really, they should just tie a piece of a torn up sheet. Anything will do.

Many progressives seem to hope there are more deaths anyway.

The "common flu" AFTER the Spanish Flu (which actually was another Chinese flu) has killed over 100,000 a year more than once and at a time with the population was half what it now. To equal a bad flu year, covid-19 will have to kill at least 200,000 people.

However, that doesn't work either because never before has the government implements rules causing people to be infected - such as ordering infected people be put into nursing homes and shutting down most retail stores to maximize congregating people together. Nor has the government claimed wrapping a piece of T-shirt or scarf around your face protects people before. Simply put, the government never before deliberately ordered putting people into harms way.

People just accept it when the experts said "everything we told you for weeks was a lie. Covid-19 is real bad and we were wrong about masks not protecting you too. Anything at all you put over your face protects everyone." And idiots just accept that absurdity.

There has been a RATING for masks for decades. SUDDENLY the experts all claim all those rating are irrelevant to anything. Anything you put over you face is just as good as a $1000 positive pressure Class A bio-hazard mask - and forget about what the experts said about vulnerability to the eyes. All studies claiming people can be infected by virus thru their eyes was all wrong. Decades of studies all were just a bunch of liars. No reason to wear face shields. Just wrap a piece of an old T-shirt around your face and you can safely be around anyone - and you can safely be around anyone with a scarf around their face too.

And most people 100% believe that too, don't they? Anything on TV is edicts from god - even if if the truth is the opposite every other day.

And the Democratic Party went berserk over it too, claiming closing the borders is racist.

You must get this bogus information from the same source that supplies you with your global warming alarmism.

The countries with the highest death rates per 100,000 are

Belgium at 76 per 100,000
Spain at 57 per 100,000
Italy at 51 per 100,000
UK at 48 per 100,000
France at 41 per 100,000
Netherlands at 33 per 100,000
Sweden at 32 per 100,000
Ireland at 30 per 100,000
US at 25 per 100,000

Claiming this was avoidable is just complete liberal idiocy. Unless, of course, you are talking about the 5000 who have died in New York nursing homes due to Cuomos mandate that they take in Covid patients. Yeah, that was avoidable but Cuomo is a liberal so you dont care
