Any Cruisers out there?

The patagonia area is on my bucket list. I was looking into a Buenos Aires to Santiago Chile cruise. I'd love to sail past Cape Horn. I want to go to perito moreno glacier bad. I took a helicopter to a glacier on my Alaska cruise. I was able to hike the glacier and it was the most amazing thing I have ever done. Seeing the inside of an ice cave is unbelievable.

Ironically I ended up not going on the above cruise because It was on Holland America which is mostly elderly people. That's the one that was stuck at sea until just recently.

Moreno glacier is probably the most incredible thing I have ever seen. Literally stood in front of the thing for hours. It’s so big that you can’t look at it all at once. There’s all these viewing platforms that you walk between seeing it at various angles. There’s also a boat to go out into the water to see it. Every few minutes, huge sheets of ice fall off the front and crash down into the sea and there’s this incredibly booming noise. Absolutely mesmerizing.

Knowing they can't keep the ship clean on a good day, and the fact that I can't leave at my leisure, the insane prices to be herded around, has kept me off the boats.

I You are smart to hold onto your stock.

Well, I would have been smart to sell it before I lost 75% of my investment. :doh But now I figure I'm in for the long haul, since worst-case scenario is the thing goes to zero and I "only" lose another 25%.

Right now most cruises are cancelled until mid May. I don't see any chance they start cruising that soon. I think it is possible that we don't see any cruises the rest of this year. If we do I think it will be very limited. There is talk of no destination cruises since it's gonna be difficult to find any ports open for ships at least early on. The cruise industry seems to be one of the greediest and very shady at times. They probably will figure out a way but I don't know when I would trust doing a cruise.

What do you all think about the future of cruising? Will Carnival make it out alive after this disaster? What kind of regulations will be put in place going forward? I can see immunity passports being a thing.

I think it'll be a good long time until I decide to cruise again. They were already having a lot of trouble with the diseases that were breaking out on boats and they tried their best to have everything cleaned every single day, down to having someone follow customers around and wipe railings.

It's simply too crowded and claustrophobic for me to fathom in today's environment. I doubt it would be relaxing at all.

You can only live in the now.

I was just starting to get into cruising. I'll just be doing some road trips up to Yellowstone or Yosemite and other national parks I've been wanting to go to. I'll revisit the cruise situation next year. I'll be curious to see what changes if any they decide to make regarding the safety of passengers.

I went to hubbard glacier in Alaska and saw some amazing calving. I have watched many youtube videos of Moreno glacier. I'm obsessed with it. I love that you can just stand on the other side and see it up close but in a safe way. That may be my next adventure until things get better with cruising.

If you would like to sail past Cape Horn, talk to Skip Novak -- Pelagic Expeditions

That's cruise is on my list too.

I agree some are just not into cruising. What's weird is how angry some people feel about cruising. The common denominator is they either have never cruised or they went cheap and got what they paid for.

BTW...I think we should take a drink every time someone say's petri dish or cesspool.

Hope they never sleep one night in a hotel...
I'm kinda hoping that some first-class, small-ship, all suite cruises will offer steep discounts to get the money flowing. I'd really like to do Windjammer for Alaska and Viking for Europe.

Me too. Expect another layer of cueing up for temperature checks and covid status.

Maybe they'll take a cue from Batik Air and spray everyone. ;)

I don’t think you’d like it. A “fun day at sea” get pretty boring once you’ve explored the ship.

As for the crowd, they were all very pleasant, and everyone seemed to be having a fine time.

But it is true the the cruise director would not have raised any eyebrows had he addressed the crowd with “Attention Wal Mart shoppers”.

I hear travel agents promote cruises as unpack once and visit several destinations. Sorry but visiting Rome and other cities with 9 hours in port is not visiting lol. I use Rome as an example, two hours each way from port to Rome leaves 4 hours in the actual city its self. On my land based visit it took me 4 hours with an Italian giude just to visit the Forum. I had 3 full days in Rome and did not see everything on my list. Sorry a cruise ship is not my idea of traveling.

I enjoyed many fine cruises with the Grey Funnel Line. Which actually paid me to go on them.

Most cruises in that region start or end in Rome. You can get their early or stay a few day's later.

I did think about rewording that! Airline emailed me saying I can reschedule for free so maybe I can go in July or something. Been off work for nearly 4 weeks so pretty broke at the moment anyway.

I had plans to go to Napa with my mom during the terrible fires 2 Novembers ago. United waived our transfer fees and we went in early Dec instead. If you speak to humans, Virgin, JetBlue, and United at least, will work with you. (Had to do alot of adjustments when my dad was passing).

I hope your trip works out. I think a trip to LA as a tourist would be a blast. I hope things have recovered enough when you go that you can have fun.

Some good information here. I’ve definitely never done something like this. Like POS, when I travel I much prefer the local tourism where you get to know a place and eat the local food, etc. Maybe it’s the sort of thing I’d like when I get older and need more comfort traveling.

Sounds like a cruise would be really cool for seeing things from sea that you maybe can’t overland. Someone mentioned the Norwegian fjords above which seen from a ship would be amazing. When I was in Chile, I went to the Torres del Paine national park which was so cool because of how remote and unspoiled it was. If you continue west from there, that whole west coast of Chile is basically uninhabited and inaccessible from land as it’s all islands. There are cruises you can do out there which look incredible.

Final note, this is a talk about cruises. Can we not be dicks to each other for once. I hate Trump as much as the next man, but Jesus give it a rest for 5 minutes while we talk about something better.

My aunt and uncle went to Antarctica for a cruise. If there's one type of cruise I would ever get, it would probably be that one since you wont be able to access that continent in any other way I think.

The closest I ever got to a cruise was the bunch of times I rode the C&O car/train ferries across Lake Michigan.

We had planned to do one in Retirement.

Oh Well

We did that many many years ago. Same with the boat that takes you over to Mackinac Island. After moving to Ohio, we took the ferry over to Bass Island a few times. One of my favorite ferry rides was the jaunt from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland. That was nothing but a drunkfest. Good times.

And, way back in the day, I had a GF who moved out to Lummi Island in WA state. The only access to her was taking a ferry....but, once I got there, we spent most of our time in bed.

**** I miss being young.

Actually, most of them origninate in Venezia (which is not Venice) or Barcelona.

This is bad short term for cruising although I'm sure the industry was preparing for this. Hopefully this pandemic will create a paradigm shift in the industry regarding the safety of passengers. I would have to think they are going to have to be more flexible with regards to cancellations in the future as well. The cruise industry has always done the bare minimum. If they want to operate in US ports any time soon this will have to change. There are three criteria for which cruising can potentially start back up. I don't think any of them will be met prior to the current one hundred day shutdown.
