A tiger at the Bronx Zoo has tested positive for the new coronavirus, in what is believed to be the first known infection in an animal in the US or a tiger anywhere, federal officials and the zoo said Sunday, per the AP. The 4-year-old Malayan tiger named Nadia—and six other tigers and lions that have also fallen ill—are believed to have been infected by a zoo employee who wasn't yet showing symptoms, the zoo said. The first animal started showing symptoms March 27, and all are doing well and expected to recover, said the zoo, which has been closed to the public since March 16 amid the surging coronavirus outbreak in New York.

"These are extremely hard days for all of us—no matter where we live and work. We will ensure that whatever we can learn from these circumstances will be used to better understand and combat this disease," says zoo director Jim Breheny. The finding raises new questions about transmission of the virus in animals. The US Department of Agriculture, which confirmed Nadia's test result at its veterinary lab, says there are no known cases of the virus in US pets or livestock. "There doesn’t appear to be, at this time, any evidence that suggests that the animals can spread the virus to people or that they can be a source of the infection in the United States," says a USDA official, but there are reports of pet dogs or cats outside the US getting infected after contact with contagious people.

CNN)Nadia, a tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York, has become the first of her kind to test positive for the coronavirus.

The 4-year-old female Malayan tiger tested positive after developing a dry cough and is expected to recover, the Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx Zoo said in a news release.

Samples from Nadia were taken and tested after the tiger -- and five other tigers and lions at the zoo -- began showing symptoms of respiratory illness, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). No other animals at the zoo are showing symptoms.

It is not known how this disease will develop in big cats since different species can react differently to novel infections, but we will continue to monitor them closely and anticipate full recoveries."

I read this, and my immediate thought was:

"Whoever violated the 6ft social distancing with the cat had some real brass!"

But seriously, I wasn't aware CV was hosted by cats. Apparently, it does.

I've read articles recently that suggest various COVID-19 tests either give a ridiculous number of false positives (mistaking basically any cold or flu for COVID-19) or give an unknown number of false positives.

I've also read that these kinds of human-to-canid and human-to-felid transmissions are so rare as to be next to impossible.

The more time goes on, the more I wonder whether half the world's epidemiology/virology "experts" have any clue what they're doing. Stories like this don't help.

We can't test nurses in some areas, but a zoo animal can get tested. Messed up. Only in New York.

It's clearly Trump's fault that they had no masks on. ;)
Maybe the cats got it from Trump? He like to grab, well .... you know!

Hmm... what is the age of consent for a tiger? ;)

But wait! All is not lost. We can send them Hydroxy!

We already know domestic cats can catch the virus, the protein in a cats lungs is similar to that in humans. Does this mean we can catch the virus from a cat, no evidence of that just yet. I believe these are isolated cases, otherwise we would have seen many cats sick with the virus by now.
