This week, as coronavirus deaths in the U.S. spiraled up to surpass those killed on 9/11, the White House is conceding that an optimistic assessment of the coming death toll will leave between 100,000 and 240,000 Americans dead. But if the White House had heeded an Army warning nearly two months ago, it might have prompted earlier action to prevent an outbreak that threatens to kill more Americans than two to four Vietnam Wars.

An unclassified briefing document on the novel coronavirus prepared on Feb. 3 by U.S. Army-North projected that “between 80,000 and 150,000 could die.” It framed the projection as a “Black Swan” analysis, meaning an outlier event of extreme consequence but often understood as an unlikely one.

In other words, the Army’s projections on Feb. 3 for the worst-case scenario in the coronavirus outbreak are, as of this week, the absolute best-case scenario—if not a miraculous one.

So, WTF? How is it that the Army realized that COVID-19 was much more serious, while the WH and CDC were totally unaware?

This is what I don't get. We know China's numbers have been bull**** for awhile. There's no way they didn't have hundreds of thousands of deaths around the country. How were they seriously able to cover that scale of death up and our government be totally unaware?

Our intelligence community grossly dropped the ball here, and there should be answers after the crisis.

I do not see how the intelligence community dropped the ball, MovingPictures. Donald Trump was told of the nature of the Coronavirus by members of the WHO in January. Intelligence and information is useless when it is not acted upon.

Here are some answers to your questions in the identical DP thread ...

^ This. Trump pulled an ostrich on this one, because he didn't want anything interfering with the economy (and by extension, his reelection campaign.) He didn't WANT to believe it was serious, so he acted like it wasn't serious.

Confirmation bias as truth, vs. facts?

Nor do I see how the IC failed. From what I have seen they are top of their game

Sadly many will die from sheer incompetence & dysfunction at all levels (excepting those few counties that closed early ahead of Gov orders).

They were on their game, action and set.

To be fair to Trump, there is no evidence he knew of how lethal it was. We have intelligence that is supposed to watch for events like this, and it appears they dropped the ball and cost us valuable information on the impact the virus could have on a populace.

Now, once the virus was here and we understood it could transmit human to human rather easily, there was no excuse for the government to not get ready for extensive testing. The South Koreans didn't trust the Chinese and were able to coordinate in an effective way in those early weeks to contain the virus. Why the hell were not on the phone with them, asking what they knew?

Worse yet, when we saw that the virus was here and the war it had brought to Italy, we should have imposed social restrictions and led the world, then and there. Leaving the virus to its own devices for a month was insanity, and we are paying a serious price for it. And if that wasn't crazy enough, Trump STILL hasn't imposed social distancing orders.

Thankfully, many governors and mayors ignored the idiocy in Washington, and acted on their own to protect their public. Newsom, Cuomo, and DeWine deserve serious respect.

That is on Trump and his executive - among other things.

Hindsight is 20-20.

If you haven't noticed our allies aren't exactly on the best of terms with us thanks to the orange sphincter treating some of them worse than our adversaries like Russian and North Korea.

It's questionable if some of them will even share intelligence with us knowing how loose lipped and unpredictable our CIC is.

Hindsight is 20-20.

Yeah it sure came out of nowhere. China than Italy, France, UK, Germany

Damned how anyone could see it coming?

Those that did were attacked for causing panic.

Sadly many gone by Easter. 8400 plus dead as of yesterday, how many in the next months.

Note the plural

How do you suggest cutting through the red tape?

Red tape is not the problem. When this administration is at odds with it's own intelligence agency and doesn't listen well you get what we have now. Not to mention how utterly stupid, arrogant, and incompetent our CIC is..

I'll agree it is at odds with what the lying media tells us transpired.

Facts are very difficult to come by at those levels, and only a fool would think the media doesn't constantly lie about this administration.

The WHO was in league with China providing false information. They were denying that there was human to human transmission at this time

8400 is not many. That’s close to total deaths every single day.

If I recall correctly, the WHO was downplaying the effects of the virus based on reports from China in January.

In fact, on 01/14/20 they said there was no evidence of human to human transmission. WHO says no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of novel coronavirus

That is a very important distinction. Denying the primary vector even exists put the level of risk at a point where even Democrats were dismissing the danger.

Or did you not notice Pelosi and De Blasio encouraging people to gather in Chinatowns in both San Francisco and NYC because there was no danger?

People need to stop all the 20/20 Hindsight arguments of "woulda, coulda, shoulda" based on information coming months after the actions were being contemplated.

We keep getting snippits of this and that, but none of us was there at the time decisions were being made. So we don't know how things were presented, exactly when, and to whom. Nor were we privy to all the ins and outs of the issues as they were being discussed.

All of that is water under the bridge. This is NOW.

Blame gaming can be done AFTER the crisis is resolved...it does no good now.

Perhaps.

"While the Army briefing document was reportedly seen by the heads of US Northern Command and US Army North and sent to senior Army leadership, it is unclear if the document was passed further up the chain, the Daily Beast reported."

WHO officials are clearly compromised by China. We fund the WHO, through the United Nations. Every warning about China was laughed at by Democrats, who cowardly attacked Russia instead, knowing that Russia doesn't have the financial capabilities and military resources to compete with us. They're bullies, and now they have 8200 American deaths on their hands.

Funny how tabloids make this claim, but they don't link the Army report, which they say is unclassified.

I call B.S.

I, too, have suspicions about this report. I can't find anything about it other than The Daily Beast who was quoted by Business insider in their version of events.
We'll be hearing more about it, no doubt, next week.

After that I agree. When I look at the US-States- Canada - Provinces- Feds actions I cannot fathom the denial of C19

Up North we acted with, mainly lower numbers, not all Provinces, the majority acted quickly-

Trump was briefed on 18 Jan by Azzar- Azzar was delayed 15 days to provide Trump with the emerging pandemic. Intel agencies would also have been on top of this.

Failure is with the leadership, Cabinet levels, that could not persuade Trump of the dangers of C19 and his complete and utter lack of leadership.

Lies and BS, along with a con mans spin was spread. Lapdogs and FOXX entertainers, less 1, spread this.

The Intelligence Community did not drop the ball on this. Trump and his lapdogs did

Exactly! And MSM isn't even commenting on the obvious, that China's numbers haven't changed in weeks, and are blatantly false in a country with more than a billion citizens!
