Trump administration cut pandemic early warning program in September | World news | The Guardian

Predict project wound down three months before outbreak

Project had identified 160 potentially dangerous coronaviruses

The Trump administration decided to end a $200m early warning program designed to alert it to potential pandemics just three months before it is believed Covid-19 began infecting people in China.

US underprepared for coronavirus due to Trump cuts, say health experts

The project, called Predict, had been run by the US Agency for International Development since 2009. It had identified more than 160 different coronaviruses that had the potential to develop into pandemics, including a virus that is considered the closest known relative to Covid-19.

A decision to wind down the program was made, however, in September, just three months before the first reports of people becoming infected with Covid-19 in Wuhan, China. The end of the program saw the departure of dozens of scientists and analysts working to identify potential pandemics in countries around the world, including China.

Not to mention the fact that the Trump administration in 2018 did not approve the construction of a rapid mask making machine that would produce in excess of 1.5 million masks per day

Field work ceased when the funding ran out in September, and organizations that worked on the PREDICT program laid off dozens of scientists and analysts, said Peter Daszak, president of EcoHealth Alliance, a key player in the program.

It is unclear whether another five-year grant would have dulled the impact of the current pandemic.

Never let a good disaster go to waste seems to be their way of thinking.

They ignore the positives, and instead declare negatives. It's been going on since the election results November 2016.

I've pointed the problems with their way of viewing the world in thread after thread, but this recent one explains it best:

What it's like to have Trump Derangement Syndrome and how you can help people overcome it.

She explains the cognitive distortions used by the TDS members of our society.

How they view things through a distorted lens.

It will always be via one or more of the following confirmation bias filters.

Emotional Reasoning; Catastrophizing; Overgeneralizing; Dichotomous Thinking (black-and-white, all-or-nothing); Mind Reading; Labeling (racist, fascist, etc.); Negative Filtering; Discounting Positives; Blaming.

As the source in my second post to the thread stated: "It is unclear whether another five-year grant would have dulled the impact of the current pandemic"

but as you said above, "never let a good crisis go to waste" and he didn't; JacksinPA babbles.... "In his murder trial, this move is equivalent to him loading his revolver."

It was just like the Oblama Derangement Syndrome displayed by Repubs for eight years prior. To include hanging lynched presidential effigies.Ring a bell or twas you born in 2017?

Trump sure has not let a crisis go to waste...

From your article:

"Two months before the novel coronavirus is thought to have begun its deadly advance in Wuhan, China, the Trump administration ended a $200-million pandemic early-warning program aimed at training scientists in China and other countries to detect and respond to such a threat."

While I do not consider myself an expert investor, I find the ROI on saving $200 million in order to spend $2 trillion later to be of dubious wisdom.

No, he works his ass off 24-7.

What have you done that is comparable?

I haven't let a massive pandemic that will kill over a hundred thousand people sweep across the nation.

If not for politics he would be held accountable.

Hmm, I voted for Obama.

While I did see some talking heads online, and a few Republican congress-critters spouting off...the MSM treated him with kid gloves. I don't recall the same levels of all-hate, all-the-time as I've seen among so many members of this Forum, the slice of humanity on twitter, and the MSM all-out propaganda war which has raged since Trump was actually nominated. Much less elected.

So while I can say there were some naysayers back then, that would be like comparing a match flame to a supernova; it is that different a level.

Hmm, not that I don't believe you, it's just that I don't believe you...The level of hate for Oblama is not less or greater than what Trump is getting....I don't care for any of them as long as they treat the US citizen like they are owned instead of actual free citizens and they all treat us like we are owned by the rich and the govt.

Hello Trix, hope all is well with you. What is happening right now with the media and the left in their revisionism of everything from timelines to false accusations of anything related to Trump is our country's enemy within in full bore to destroy this country, every institution that made it great and replace it with something it was never meant to be. And in order to do that it takes power and that is what they seek at all costs. These ignorant assholes make China, N Korea, Russia proud and don't even realize it. The left's ignorance on basics of how our government was designed and still is the greatest successful experiment to mankind in all of history, are so ignorant. Just look at all the Bernie supporters.

During this time of a horrific pandemic worldwide where death and sickness are everywhere, you would hope people would pull together and stop the partisan charades but not these people. Not the poster of this OP and his fellow circle jerk of friends on this forum. "Never let a good crisis go to waste". That's their motto and Alinsky would be so proud of all of them.

I am all for debate on policies in politics. One reason is because it makes you have to think why you believe what you do and defend it. But what goes on here at DP 98% of the time doesn't produce those types of discussions.

Trump is never going to get an ounce of recognition for anything from these people. It is what it is. Do the majority of voters see through what is being fed to them? We will know in November. If by some chance they are successful, I will mourn for my country for a time knowing this is the beginning of the end of the great experiment.

Nonsense. Are you EVER going to blame the actual criminals that brought this situation about: the Chinese government? The treachery, misdirections, lies and delays in informing the world are what got us to this point. Calm down, have a nice bowl of bat soup and relax.
