USNS Comfort Hospital Ship Was Supposed to Aid New York. It Has 3 Patients. - The New York Times

“It’s a joke,” said a top hospital executive, whose facilities are packed with coronavirus patients.

Such were the expectations for the Navy hospital ship U.S.N.S. Comfort that when it chugged into New York Harbor this week, throngs of people, momentarily forgetting the strictures of social distancing, crammed together along Manhattan’s west side to catch a glimpse.

On Thursday, though, the huge white vessel, which officials had promised would bring succor to a city on the brink, sat mostly empty, infuriating executives at local hospitals. The ship’s 1,000 beds are largely unused, its 1,200-member crew mostly idle.

This is a Navy ship. I blame the Commander-in-Chief - Trump - for the lack of an adequate resonse here. 'I'm not responsible' - Donald Trump.

They are working things out.

It should fill up soon.

It may have a lot to do with how some people use the emergency rooms.
With everyone mostly doing a shelter in place, fewer accidents, fewer shootings, ect.
Also people who might go to the emergency room for almost anything are staying away, for fear of exposure.

Personally, I am shocked - shocked - to hear that government provided healthcare might be ineffective and inefficient.

Of course, you do....

You won't blame him if a friend or family's life is on the line, and they are saved by the availability of the ships on both the left and right coasts.

The Comfort was scheduled to dock in NY Harbor long before news of the Corona breakout in China. Its presence here had nothing to do with treating virus victims and still doesn't. This is what happens when media BS flies. It docked here for resupply, with a crew trained for trauma response, not treatment of virus victims.

Blame the Commander-in-Chief?

It's a single hospital ship out of what, two in the Navy? USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) and USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) The US Navy -- Fact File: Hospital Ships T-AH

Each has a 1000 bed capacity. One is currently in NYC.

NYC has 63,306 confirmed Covid-19 cases as of this time/date 1:20 PM EST 04/04/20. United States Coronavirus (COVID-19) Tracker

What did you expect?

Oh wait, cue in the "woulda, coulda, shoulda" 20/20 hindsight armchair-CinC's refrain. :coffeepap:

And? It is what it is.

YOU "blame the Commander-in-Chief." (As usual, no surprise there.)

What's the gripe this time?

A thousand bed capacity. It's been there at least a week. And only 20 patients on board? This is a military facility. Where is the Commander-in-Chief's direction?

Blame Cuomo. He should be coordinating with the hospitals to move less serious patients to the ship.

Good that they take their time, unless you want to do a rush job and do the opposite of what you are trying to accomplish.

You're dealing with the military & their beaurucracy.

And how many people will die while they 'take their time'?

Strict rules are in place for not admitting those infected. They have to be tested before being admitted to either ship.
The Navy is in the process of speeding up this process.

Ambulances cannot take patients directly to the Comfort; they must first deliver patients to a city hospital for a lengthy evaluation — including a test for the virus — and then pick them up again for transport to the ship.

If he read his article he would admit that the numbers of people being admitted for non-coronavirus illnesses is remarkably low.

there is not a high volume of noncoronavirus patients. Because most New Yorkers have isolated themselves in their homes, there are fewer injuries from car accidents, gun shots and construction accidents that would require an emergency room visit.

Here's what the complaints are really about... They want the ship in NY to be open to coronavirus patients and to hell with the non-affected coronavirus patients put at risk by that decision.

I think as days go by, the Navy will iron out the bugs, and we will see a greater number of patients being admitted.
I am certainly grateful for the Mercy being in LA for those non infected covid-19 patients.

If you had watched a single briefing you would know what the ship is there for. Its been explained ad nauseum on national TV for days.

Thank you. :applaud

Trump is not "in charge" of what's happening in either NYC or NY State.

There is a city Mayor named De Blasio, and a state Governor named Cuomo.

As Trump has said, the Federal government is providing support to the State and Local governments. But he is (currently) letting them do their thing.

Seems like many people want Trump and the Feds to take over completely. Funny when many of those same people can't give him credit for anything, but are fully willing to lay all the blame on him.

Even funnier that they've claimed all along he want's to be a dictator, meanwhile he is actively trying to avoid using dictatorial powers.

This is the same caliber of Federal inaction that caused 2,000 deaths in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina under Shrub. 'Heck of a job, Brownie.'

So why is the mayor failing to put people on the ship?

I'd venture to say there are several major concerns (I feel "gripe" is too dismissive a term myself)

1. Patients are being mistakenly boarded.
2. The vessel arrived on Monday and after 4 or even 5 days has only 20 patients are on board.
3. Another vessel docked in L.A. has only 15 paitents but this has been docked only a day or so.
4. There is mounting bureaucracy and confusion over what types of patients exactly are to be brought to these ships.
5. The intention was to never treat Covid-19 patients but if the virus did get onboard (it will) then another minor catastrophe would befall the city.
6. The Confort was an expensive waste of time and money during an earlier challenge Hurrican Maria in 2017, again just a handful of patients were assisted.
7. And last but by no means least, if the press raise questions about this with trump during Q/A sessions they are invariably reprimanded by him for asking "nasty" questions.

None of this is surprising when we have an ill equipped, spoiled individual who has never experienced physical hardship or poverty, never actually had to attend a job interview, as the primary source of guidance and wisdom.

We are, quite simply f****d.

Yep, and in order to be "certified" as a non-COVID-19 patient one must test negative for COVID-19 - if only those who have "likely and serious" COVID-19 symptoms are being tested then how are those non-COVID-19 patients supposed to get tested?
