You may be able to spread coronavirus just by breathing, new report finds | Science | AAAS

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has given a boost to an unsettling idea: that the novel coronavirus can spread through the air—not just through the large droplets emitted in a cough or sneeze. Though current studies aren’t conclusive, “the results of available studies are consistent with aerosolization of virus from normal breathing,” Harvey Fineberg, who heads a standing committee on Emerging Infectious Diseases and 21st Century Health Threats, wrote in a 1 April letter to Kelvin Droegemeier, head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

IOW, no place outside your home is safe.

Well, that's it. Nobody can leave their house ever again. Grocery stores are now a public health hazard and will need to be closed. Odds are it's in your water too so, basically, you already have the bug. The only thing they haveen'
t told you yet is that the mortality rate is really 97.6% and you're going to die by the end of the week unless, of course, someone gets Trump out of office and appoints Don Lemon president.

Yep, which is why nobody, being a just a regular person, could ever benefit from wearing a mask. ;)

I think it will be found that those who wore so much as a bandanna wrapped around their faces experienced lesser degrees of infection than those who wore nothing. I see it like wearing a condom: it doesn’t confer God Mode immunity on the wearer, but goddamn if it doesn’t give him better odds.

Poor lutherf. Reduced to heckling facts from the sidelines during a health crisis.

Will it make a difference or not?

Mandatory masks for people working in San Diego starting Saturday. I'm surprised they didn't mandate this earlier. We're in uncharted waters, and the new rules and guidelines seem to change by the day. According to the O/P, nobody is safe anywhere. What's next? Duct tape?

"The order will make it mandatory for businesses that interact with the public to use cloth face coverings for their employees starting Saturday; that includes grocery stores, pharmacy's and gas stations, according to Supervisor Nathan Fletcher."

Based on the article, there still is more work to do before they can conclusively state it spreads through the air, I wouldn't be surprised if that is indeed the case. We'll be at a point where everyone going outside will have to cover their faces to reduce the odds of spreading the virus. I'm really hoping some headway is made with a means of treatment soon; I support the current social distancing/shelter in place strategies, but they're not going to be sustainable over the long term.

There's a study out that says people who wear masks are more likely to get infected. They adjust their masks throughout the day, touching their face.

What the masks are good for is to help block your infected spittle when you cough. It helps keep others safe, not you.

Wouldn't something like a bandana create a sponge for the virus to attach to directly over your mouth exposing it to you longer?

You know, after typing out my reply and hitting "post," I considered that.

Personally Ive started wearing one because I touch my face too much.

I only remember not when I do, and then it's too late. Its reflex.

But if I touch my mask, I will have an opportunity to not touch my face or adjust my mask to the point where I touch my face.

Conservatives tend to ignore facts if they interfere with the economy. Climate change is one example.

I am genuinely curious about that answer. I see a lot of conflicting information online.

My understanding is that it's not ideal for attempting not to get infected BUT if you are infected and asymptomatic, it's harder for you to spread it.

Just off the top of my head info I've picked up along the way, could be wrong.

Because Trump!!!!

It may. This does appear to have been a tricky issue that we learned about sort of in real-time.
Early on they thought it would compete with hopsitals/ehalthcare for masks, and that made it really hard to suggest..probably a good call.
But as we have learned about asymptomatic carriers and the incredible ease at which is spreads through breathing, talking, and that even a home-made or cloth covering may provide some protection (to others, not so much from others), that it seems to be a good move. But risks from touching the mask...who knows if it net-helps/hurts. Only a good study would tell us, and we're in the middle of the war.

Even my respiratory doctors office is not currently wearing masks, its very unsettling. They could be asymptomatic and infecting patients. I told them this, and they just cited CDC guidelines saying its only if you have fever. So I hope it makes it to CDC as a guideline.

If there is any time to be a try-hard, it's now :)

Well I think your question is completely valid. I'm guessing that a large part of the n95 design is relevant to your point.

For Trump!

Duct tape for Trump!!!!

If not for his words, we wouldn't all be about to die!

In other news, the WuFlu is responsible for a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction of global deaths.

Or it could buy time for you to get home and get the mask in the wash before that happens. it's still gotta be better than just letting that droplet sit on your face or worse rub it onto your finger and scratch your nose.

Yup.

I recently came across a study that found that people who duct tape a garbage bag over their head successfully live the remainder of their lives ever catching any virus.

Stupidly, I didn't think about it from the spreading perspective. Only receiving the infected. That makes a lot more sense.

That is why initially I though Japan had very low numbers even though they were one of the early infected countries, a lot of people from school kids to old people wear masks as a general practice and in general, extremely clean country that values cleanliness highly.

But oh man, there is a ton of controversy over the current numbers and why they spiked after the PM delayed the Olympics and all of a sudden it seems they may have a problem.
