US coronavirus live: Cuomo to seize ventilators from owners to give to hospitals in need | US news | The Guardian

New York governor Andrew Cuomo said he would sign an executive order to seize medical equipment from hospitals that are not as overwhelmed with coronavirus patients right now.

Cuomo said the National Guard would be used to take ventilators and personal protective equipment to help hospitals that are particularly hard hit right now, presumably those in New York City and Long Island.

Cuomo said the equipment would be returned or reimbursed, but the move is likely to spark outcry from hospitals in upstate New York, which has seen fewer coronavirus cases.

Cuomo is a one-man death panel.

That's the go to excuse dictators have used for centuries.

I can't imagine a hospital not sharing ventilators that they aren't using.

Is it even a thing?

Note to all Republicans who condemn using a state of emergency to seize medical equipment from underburdened hospitals in order to save lives: you supported using a national emergency declaration to divert tax dollars to build a ****ing wall.

So settle down.

Cuomo is doing what he has to do to save lives.

I'm sure the folks in Schenectady who die because the governor sent all their ventilators to the Bronx will understand.

Have you seen where Trump's government is importing equipment to give to wholesalers so the hospitals have to bid against each other "like we were on Ebay!"? That's how it should be done, right?

Cuomo is a one-man death panel.

Are you a foreign intell disinformation agent? Or just ignorant about the current epidemic in New York?

The "death panel" members are POTUS, Pence, and the slow-witted state governors who refuse to tell citizens to keep their asses at home.
If we limit exposure we reduce infection transmission. That would slow the flood of severely ill needing hospitalization--and use of rare ventilators.
But of course Trump and the slower governors are unable/unwilling to tell folks to stay away from each other.

Were those private funds, confiscated from private citizens? No? Didn't think so.

Link?

Nope, he is deciding where (which?) lives "should be" saved. It's not as if the mighty Cuomo knows where a ventilator is no longer going to be needed. It's not as if ventilators (or other ER/ICU gear to become under his personal control) are only needed to treat COVID-19 patients in (his personally selected?) "hot spots".

Folks can and do experience the need for such medical care (and without any advance notice) for reasons (like motor vehicle or construction accidents) totally unrelated to COVID-19. There is no way that Cuomo should be granted that life and death power over what medical care equipment is allowed to remain available for use by medical care facilities outside of COVID-19 "hot spots".

What a goofy attempt to seek out some kind of meaningful distinction.

A democracy aims for the good of the majority.
Cuomo's marshaling of all available heavy artillery in order to defend the front where the enemy are doing the most damage is classic military strategy.
You suggest it would be better to leave life-saving equipment unused in communities currently experiencing little Covid-19.
I'm glad you're not in charge.

Well said, and I wonder how many today realize that Churchill bombed the French (an ally) fleet in 1940 in order to eliminate any risk that that fleet would fall into German hands?

This was not done lightly and gave no joy to Churchill and his cabinet but was done to further the aims of the war, to eliminate the Nazi military threat which was hell bent on subjugating Western Europe.

Cuomo is facing this kind of reality, difficult decisions something our president has never had to do because every decision he takes is easy, whim is his only tool.

Easy for you to say. But you ignore the deadly body count we are suffering here in "down state" New York.
Cuomo's marshaling of all available ventilators in order to reduce immediate deaths will save more lives than sticking with the status quo.
You suggest it would be better to leave life-saving equipment unused in communities currently experiencing little Covid-19.
But Cuomo's decision will reduce death rate in crowded hospital hallways.
All those systems can, and will be returned to other locations as the epidemic grows elsewhere in the state.

How, exactly, does a hospital know that they will have no need for a given ventilator? If they had no expectation for needing a given ventilator then why, exactly, did they have it in the first place?

Until then, those with need of returning ventilators (or other medical care equipment/supplies) taken for use in other locations should just wait patiently until Cuomo realizes that need? Do you understand that life saving medical care needs are not limited to COVID-19 victims?

Thanks Sherlock. As you know Churchill knew if those French war ships remained in German hands they would be used against the Allies.
I'm sure that decision required extra measures of drink that night! But he acted! If I told some of the Trump defenders who post regularly in this forum that
Churchill is one of my few heroes, they most likely would point out the man was known to have made some grievous errors in his lifetime.
We have so many pompous know-it-alls among us.

I am still waiting for POTUS to take effective action. But you want to piss and moan because Cuomo is doing what a Commander in Chief must do--make difficult tough decisions.
Trump simply kicks the can down the road to the 50 governors. I am GLAD Cuomo is a thoughtful courageous leader rather than a reality-challenged windbag like The Donald.

BTW -- has the governor of Texas yet decided to limit all you folks from rubbing shoulders?
If not you might require some NY ventilators in the future.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul is not "taking effective action".

Wouldn't he be better served utilizing the ones he has stockpiled?

Cuomo is a one-man death panel.

Ignorant post. A hospital that isn't using a ventilator and is not predicted to need one in the short term, is effectively acting like a "death panel" if someone in an different area of NY is dying because they don't have that ventilator.
In Cuomo's case, he's saying tehy will maximize saving lives. Which you oppose, because...you tell us why you want more people to die. tell us.

You have to use your brain cells to understand these things.

If someone gets really sick from the Chinese Flu in the towns that had their ventilators confiscated, will Cuomo send them back? If not, then he prioritized who would live and who would die and "one man death panel" is applicable.
