Should everyone wear them or not. The CDC is still undecided on the issue ..for me this wavering speaks to a lack of confidence and basic common sense.

For once Trump is right on the issue of covering ones nose and mouth IMHO.

Most countries in the world are saying everybody WEAR THEM!!!

Should You Wear A Face Mask? The CDC Is Reconsidering Its Guidance : Shots - Health News : NPR

How does one get masks at all? And, w/o taking them away from medical staff on the front lines?

Trump: “The masks are being made by the millions,” Trump said on March 14. “Millions and millions. We have plenty now, but we're ordering for the millions. We're ordering worst-case scenario.”

Since the virus is spread airborne through our mouths it only makes sense if there was a barrier to oral spray it would drastically help.

The problem now is a continual lack of masks.

Then there are the over reactionaries. I have seen people alone driving in their vehicle wearing a mask. Unless you are driving a taxi that does not make sense.

I would only suggest wearing a mask while out in public shopping such as a grocery store to protect others from your micro spit lauched from our mouths.

But too often the mask may give the person a false sense of security. Because of the days when I wore a facemask during surgeries the first thing I did when exiting the surgery is to fling that mask off and rub my face with my hand.

Here is an additional thought that I haven't seen brought up. Mouth breathers.

You know, you see them all the time . Those people walking around with their bottom lips hanging down like a broke tail gate on a pickup.

If one breathes through their nose the nasal hairs do help some filtering of air entering and exiting.

Make one for yourself ..any kind of a barrier is better than nothing.

I think them not saying everyone should be masked out in public, is simply about keeping the supply
for the medical professionals who really need them.
Were the supply unlimited, I suspect they would be saying to ware masks.

True, common sense is the key. Or, if a mask is homemade and doesn't fit right, fingers constantly going to face to adjust defeats the purpose. 250 years ago when plagues were common people had the basic common sense to cover there faces. The CDC can't figure it out, how sad.

Its as simple as telling people to make a mask for themselves ..there lack of authority is the issue ..Shell-Shocked.

I've started wearing a painting mask not because it provides me protection but because it contains my germs should I catch it and not k ow and more importantly to keep me from touching my face when I'm out. I am terrible about that and only realize I'm doing it when I do it.

Lots of folks are making masks. They started doing it when healthcare desperately needed them. Now that it looks like production is up from manufacturers it might he time for them to shift to making them for the rest of us.

The reason they haven't advised people to all start wearing masks in public is the physical shortage for healthcare workers, concerns of runs and theft and hoarding and gouging.

Somebody a couple of days ago said adoption of wearing masks when in public is also about normalizing the practice and peer pressure. Because it does help if done properly.

The latest direction we have is to wear a mask only to help deter you touching your face. If you are taking care of someone with corona and you should wear a N95 mask for droplet precautions. Washing your hands or using hand sanitizer often is the best preventative. And if you can just stay home. I'm still amazed at the people that go out with their children for beer. But they can't show up to work because they are afraid for their family.

When you look at photos of Americans during the 1918 influenza pandemic, one feature stands out above all else ..masks. Fabric, usually white gauze, covers nearly every face. Across the country, public health experts recommended universal mask wearing, and some cities ordered residents to wear them under penalty of fine or imprisonment. The Red Cross made thousands of cloth masks and distributed them for free. Newspapers published instructions for sewing masks at home. “Make any kind of a mask ..and use it immediately and at all times,” the Boston commissioner of health pleaded. “Even a handkerchief held in place over the face is better than nothing.”

Now, enter 2020 and the CDC's lack of common sense.

I agree, Trump said something about a scarf, which would be better than nothing, but people want guidance.
I think, what they really want is for people to stay isolated as much as possible.

There is a move underway to have people with sewing machines to make cloth masks.
One fabric store is giving away kits, for people who are willing to make masks.
( I hear my Wife in the other room, grumbling that the instructions are poor.)
My wife is making the masks for the fabric store, but is also making 20 some odd for all the members of our extended family.

How to make a twelve-layer mask in 40 seconds without a sewing machine.

What you are asking for is a declaration that everybody must wear something most people who do not already have them will not have access to until long after this crisis is over. You are just adding to the mental anguish that America and the world has enough of right now. If you want to wear one, then wear one.

Masks don't keep you from getting infected. There's been a study that shows they help you get infected because people are always adjusting their masks and touching their face.

But masks do prevent you from infecting other people by blocking your spit when you cough. They say it's up to 50% effective at stopping you from infecting others.

So they work, but only if everyone wears them.

That gives me an idea. How about EVERYBODY WEAR THEM?!!

The problem is if the Government wants the public to wear masks,
- not everyone has masks or the ability to make one.
- how often can the same mask be used
- what is the filtration spec needed. In some other post some said the COVID virus is .125 micron in size. Most dust mask filter down to .3 micron. So unless the virus is bound to something increasing the size the mask is worthless.

Lack of information and supply of mask is going to hinder the public ability to use them. Like others medical workers and first responders would be my priority for mask and other PPE.

If wearing a mask increases the likelihood you get infected, how is that working?

It looks like it's a wash at best.

It's not. It decreases the chances because all the sick people who don't know they are sick yet will be wearing masks too.

Wear a mask and don't touch your face. Actually don't touch your face in any case. But wear a mask too.

People who've never worn masks might not realize that unless they are really fitted, you wind up touching them to reposition and to just get relief from them. They can be stifling.
I'm all for covering up in public to protect others. But the risk is that sick people will go out thinking they're not infecting others, and people who don't think or know they're sick will put themselves and others at risk.
As Birx says, our best tool right now is to stay home.
Giving the green light to wearing masks will have to come with a lot of caveats and warnings. I'm afraid too many people are too stupid and/or selfish to fully understand.

My sense is that it would be a wash, given all the factors. If you're not wearing a properly-fitted N-95 (or equivalent) mask, you are not protected by wearing a mask.

The goal of the mask isn't to protect the healthy person. It's to stop the sick people from spreading it.

People who get the virus are contagious but asymptomatic for up to a week. They will be going out and infecting others. If everyone wore a mask, then the virus would spread more slowly.
