A Ventilator Stockpile, With One Hitch: Thousands Do Not Work - The New York Times

WASHINGTON — President Trump has repeatedly assured Americans that the federal government is holding 10,000 ventilators in reserve to ship to the hardest-hit hospitals around the nation as they struggle to keep the most critically ill patients alive.
But what federal officials have neglected to mention is that an additional 2,109 lifesaving devices are unavailable after the contract to maintain the government’s stockpile lapsed late last summer, and a contracting dispute meant that a new firm did not begin its work until late January. By then, the coronavirus crisiswas already underway.

This is what happens when people who don’t believe in government end up running one. Chaos and mismanagement rules the day. No national response, with states bidding against each other.

As of today, there has been no ban on exporting critical supplies and needed supplies being exported abroad.

It's our tragedy and our legacy now.

Rather than whining, get them fixed ... like Gavin proudly did.

"... “Rather than lamenting about it, rather than complaining about it, rather than pointing fingers, rather than generating headlines in order to generate more stress and anxiety, we got a car and a truck,” Newsom said after touring Bloom Energy's ventilator refurbishing site in Sunnyvale, Calif.

“We had those 170 brought here to this facility at 8 a.m. this morning, and they are quite literally working on those ventilators right now.” ..."

LOL All you have done is proven that they actually were working on this issue in January despite repeated claims the administration wasn't doing anything.

Ventilators are sensitive machinery that Mr. Trump described on Sunday as so complex they were like “building a car.” But, experts say, like a car, they cannot be stored for lengthy periods without maintenance. So few are surprised that as the nation’s hospitals scramble to pull together every usable ventilator they can find, some have come out of storage with depleted batteries, missing oxygen hoses and other issues.
Most RCPs worth their salt can solve this rather quickly. As for the rest of the partisan grandstanding, lets just take a deep breath and take it for what it is worth.

They let the repair contract expire.

Where are the state governments when it comes to stockpiling critical supplies in advance? Are all governors totally dependent on Trump to immediately miraculously supply all their emergency needs in every situation as soon as it occurs?

Can’t fix them if they still are in a federal warehouse. There is no reason for respirators to still be in storage. That’s another leg in incompetence and mismanagement.

The Boston Globe says it plainly.

I wish all the anti-government tea party folks and other anarchists like Bannon had gone to Russia and messed up that country.

Try telling that to Cuomo; he's hoarding them like mad - in NJ, I believe -, wants everything the federal government has so that the other 49 states get nothing when they put in their requests.

That doesn't make sense. It makes more sense for the federal government to have equipment that then gets distributed to states as needed, opposed to 50 states having duplicate inventory.

I guess in just goes to show you can't stock pile ventilators.

Cuomo isn't hoarding anything. Considering New York has the highest incidence of infection they need all the respirators they can get. What option do you suggest?

What in the world? Do you really know better than Gov. Cuomo what is going on in New York?

The facts, okay Zack, somebody said on one of the cable news shows the ventilators that New York needed aren’t even being deployed. They’re in a stockpile. Yes, they’re in a stockpile because that’s where the supposed to be because we don’t need them yet. We need them for the apex. The apex isn’t here, so we’re gathering them in the stockpile so when we need them they will be there. We don’t need them today because we’re not at capacity today. That’s why they’re not deployed because they’re not needed. -Andrew Cuomo

When conservative ideology believes that government is incompetent, when conservatives run the government they make it a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It's a "heck of a job, Brownie," moment.

They may be at capacity tomorrow. So what option do you suggest; they pass their supplies on somewhere else and leave themselves unable to cope next week?

The Trump Extended Vacation.

HHS Secretary Alex Azar asked OMB in early January for $2 billion to restock the Strategic Supply. The Trump WH cut this back to $500 million. A 75% haircut.

Pence just found out yesterday that USAID was sending PPE pallets overseas. He had no idea.

Trump has been saying he's holding back 30,000 SNS ventilators in reserve for emergencies. I don't believe it. I think they've thoroughly ****ed up the supply/logistics chain.

If Cuomo isn't hoarding then why do you ask: "What option do you suggest?" ...

So they were hoarding. Gotcha. I'm sure no one else needs ventilators today, so might as well sit in a New Jersey warehouse in case New York needs them sometime in the future.
