Cup is half full ----is there any good that can come out of the pandemic?

I think we will learn to take viruses more seriously now. I have long been a proponent, since the country no longer operates on farm-time, of moving the long break for school kids from summer to winter to minimize the spread of flu during peak months... maybe it will get some traction now and save lives, in the long run.

Also, the sudden push for employers to accept telework, maybe we'll get a reprieve from the eternal encroachment of road infrastructure projects on living spaces and natural habitats.

The long winter breaks sounds like a great idea.

I think different geographical/climate areas could adjust this to suit their specific needs.

We had modified year round for several years (6 wks summer/6 weeks winter if I recall.) and the only reason it did not work is that child care issues were a nightmare - but that could have been fixed.

I am a cup is half full kind of person.

As horrible as the pandemic is, can you see any good (either trivial or substantive) to come out of the pandemic?

On a trivial note....it will be harder for bosses and teachers to push sick employees to come in to work. It is beyond obnoxious when sick employees and students come in....

Nice not dealing with traffic and lines at the gas station.

I am not a sports fan, 'nuff said,

Biggest trivial thing...I hate close talkers. It will now be more acceptable to back them the hell up and to get out of my personal space.:lamo

On a serious note......health care issues are pushed to the forefront.

Emergency preparedness is a real thing...we are paying more attention. Emergency kits don't only have to be for earthquakes and hurricanes.

Politically it could go either way. It is hard for me to tell - I am in the health care field and most folks I come in contact with are disgusted with Trump's disconnect from reality. I am also in a blue state.

Any thoughts?

Hopefully some people will learn that have some basic supplies at home in case of emergency is a good idea
Think a lot of families will become closer and stronger for it.
Think in 9 months there will be a whole new baby boom.
The State and Federal governments should be far better prepared for the next pandemic, and yes there will be another one, and another.
Some will learn that the stock market can take away what it gives over night, diversif your investments.
That many employees will discover that people working remote saves them a lot of money in overhead costs, also reducing traffic and polution.
That some companies that ignored the safety of their employees and find them to be far less popular in the future.
Those just a few off the top of my head.

There might be, but I don't think there's going to be a wide scale work from home shift right away. Many corporations either own or rent office space; in the case of the latter, the long leases they're in will likely keep them using the office space for the next few years. There's a lot to be said about direct interpersonal contact that I don't think is going to go away any time soon.

I think the shift we be significant, if not massive. Maintaining office space is a huge overhead: cleaning services, utility bills, lease/buy a building, insurance, office furniture, fewer sexual harassment incidents. Insurance alone is a big expense.

From the employee's perspective: less gas and wear on their personal vehicles, the ones who don't have vehicles won't have to worry about getting to work, less child care expenses in some cases, no more buying clothes to meet the company dress code, etc.

Then you're saying the gov is responsible for our welfare since we are the gov?

I'm not responsible to support you. YOU are responsible to support you.

I hope when this thing is over, all Americans learn never ever to take their freedom and liberty for granted it again.
Sometimes, like now, with the various state lockdowns and social distancing, one has to realize what loss of freedom actually means.

The failure of the private health care market is good, and its replacement with single payer or MedicareForAll is good.

The end of the conservative economic policies of the GOP is good, and the move of the entire GOP to a Big Progressive party is good.

The working of the governments with business for the effective care of the people and the economy is good.

The exposure of Trumpism as not a failure but as an anti-American system of governance is good.

Is this an April fools joke?

The exact opposite is true. A big benefit will be that we don't need to worry about Bernie, AOC or Warren types for a while.

So, you agree with trickle down economics?

I agree with trickle-up economics, when the wage earners are paid fairly, the economy and companies boom.

That is countered by the fact that consumers more (most?) often prefer to buy the least expensive (often foreign made) among similar products.

Trump could catch the virus and succumb to it, that would certainly improve the way the crisis is being managed, with Trump no longer pulling the strings all of would stand a better chance of survival.

Annnnnnd this is why you will not be taken seriously ever in the future.

That's only because the dominant competition is willing to offer these cheap imported products. Pay employees more and maybe they'll upgrade to more expensive domestic-made products.

When wage earners (working class) are working at all, the economy booms. Unemployed people don't have disposable income. In this scenario, they may not have anything. Unfortunately there aren't as many James Braddocks left in the world.

Then the products will cost more to cover the increase in wages. Labor is the single biggest overhead any company has.

Loop argument with no winners. Try again, please.

When it's time to roll up our sleeves and face adversity, it's NO time for fear or panic.

We give the media too big of a pass to engender fear and negativity in our every day lives. Cut it off.

Just get to work and do what we have to do to beat whatever challenge we are facing, and do it together with no fear.

There is no more you vs me vs them. We're all in this together so lets act like it.

That's what I'm learning.

That is not likely to happen since price competition is not going to disappear even when only among US suppliers of goods/services. Employers are apt to pay little more than that required to attract and retain qualified labor, while trying to gain a market (consumer choice) advantage.

Hmm... I take it that your job not been declared 'non-essential' by your governor, your pay stopped and been given instructions for filing for UI benefits.
