Trump just acknowledged downplaying the coronavirus threat: 'I knew it could be horrible'

Trump says he downplayed coronavirus: '''I knew it could be horrible''' - Business Insider

While i appreciate his wanting to maintain optimism, this is kind of a big thing to fudge. Maybe we could have avoided the last few weeks of his followers saying it's just a bad cold if he had said something at the very least.

Trump imposed travel restrictions on China back when the mainstream opinion was that it was just a cold and that borders were racist.

It's interesting to see the media construct its lies in real time though.

No, Trump has done pretty good with this crisis with the tools that he has....few would have done better...

Wrong. He mishandled it in all kinds of ways. And continues to mismanage it to this very day - he is still refusing to lock down the nation (even after admitting discussing it) AND he is still not handling distribution of PPE and ventilators and making States fight each other (as well as the Fed Govt).

Leaving handling of this crisis to others is the only thing he is doing and it's damaging our response. Piecemeal shutdowns in different non-isolated parts of the country will only prolong the crisis and make the virus go back and forth between shutdown and non-shutdown states.

But yet you say Cuomo who has 42% of America deaths in his state did a terrific job? Trump did everything right. You demand he see things nobody else could predict.

1. I never said Cuomo did a "terrific" job. Don't know why you keep lying.

2. Cuomo was slow to lock his state down. However he was slow by a few days or a week. Cuomo is not in charge of testing. Fed Govt / CDC did not give Cuomo and rest of States any data on the state of virus. Trump was not just slow by 1.5 months, he also mishandled the crisis in many other ways that I had outlined in the past.

The problem with offering false reassurance is that once people realize you have been lying to them trying to reassure them, you have lost all credibility and they are going to be more neurotic and paranoid than ever before. And now you are left all out of any credibility ammo.

Trump supporters continued to claim he was credible, even after 15,000+ very poorly constructed, dangerous lies. But at this point, I can't believe even they will believe a single word he says.

But then again, members of this dangerous cult never stop amazing me.

Trump never apologizes, nor does he ever admit to being wrong. Don't hold your breath waiting for him to admit any mistake, ever.

Almost never....which is what makes him doing it so big.

The bigger problem is that the citizens are owed the truth when a lot of us are about to die because our elite ****ed up big, over many many years.....when we are dying because they failed.

Wuhan blew up because their leaders did not tell the truth..The people could not look after themselves because they did not know what was going on, because their leaders kept the information from them.

Trump watched that....and then decided to not tell the truth the best that he could to us....decided to slip into Trump the Salesman mode.

Not Cool.

That is the nature of TrumpSpeak. What he likely intended to say (but seems incapable of actually saying) is that he was presented with both worst case and best case guesstimates by "experts" and he chose to act according to the best case (good - in TrumpSpeak) guesstimates.

That's as good an explanation as any, I suppose. Best case, though, would have assumed a proactive and aggressive response, which Trump did not enact.

Almost never....which is what makes him doing it so big.

Is that what he did?

Quick recap:

He said he knew everything.

That he (knowingly) downplayed the dangers.

That it could have gone either way.

That he wanted to be positive.

Where's the apology? Where's the admission of a mistake?

When the same people who pushed the collusion lie and they phony impeachment are also the ones pushing this thing as catastrophic, I tend to be very skeptical.

When this latest *catastrophe* doesn't kill anywhere near as many people as liberals are hoping for, what will their NEXT arson attempt consist of?

It will be a WHOPPER for sure.

This was something Trump said himself. It's not some opinion piece from Mother Jones.

Tell your god-king. He admitted that he screwed up, he knows it's a serious thing. You want to deny it but when Dems and Trump are both saying the same thing.....

Well Trump is just the sort of person to say he "knew all along" because he hates to sound dumb. The hole that digs though Donnie, is which is it? You knew it was bad but lied and said it would be over by April, or you're dumb as a rock and didn't understand the severity of the problem...

Quite a choice for his supporters to make as well. Be interested if they have a creative excuse or just shoot the messenger again.

The president himself and his team have said now over 100,000 could die, maybe twice that. Ask them. Sounds pretty catastrophic to me.

The Trumpers are okay with people dying as long as the numbers don't look too bad for Trump.

Now that he has said this, I expect that his followers will change their tune.

I hope you have a big bag of chips and a hefty bottle of water. Methinks you'll be waiting a while on that.

Speaking of lies. You Trumpers are shameless.

So he underestimated the threat. Many Democrats were doing that even after Trump realized it was going to be worse than he originally thought.

But what's more important than words is action. He was also the first to start taking bold, necessary steps like suspending travel to the source country, while Democrats were calling it "racist", and saying that it shouldn't be done! Also while Dems were still telling people to go to crowded places, and while they were still having parades, marathons, etc!

Speaking of lies. You Trumpers are shameless.

Instead of making baseless, unprovable accusations like ^this one, without any specific examples of the "shameless lies" you stereotyped all "Trumpers" with, it would be useful if you actually mentioned a few of the alleged lies you are speaking of. Then post LEGITIMATE sources disproving their "lies". Otherwise it sounds petty and vindictive. That's not how you debate. You'll notice that many "Trumpers" tend to post actual links, videos or articles that actually include REAL evidence of their points(unlike what you see at CNN and MSNBC).

I'm sure there are cases of Trump supporters posting some info that may turn out to be inaccurate. But I'll bet money that most "Trumpers" here are more accurate and truthful than Don Lemon, Chris Cuomo, Chris Hayes, Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow, etc etc...

He knew it could be horrible or good? How could it possibly be good?

If Democrats, illegal immigrants, Muslims, law enforcement investigating him, media, and his critics caught it.

Irony of the day award as you post lies about people like Chris Hayes and Rachel Maddow without any "specific examples" (Rachel has made *one* partial error). Meanwhile, just today - CNN, if you want to attack the source, prove your points:

Fact check: Trump repeats falsehood that 'nobody' warned of ventilator shortages - CNNPolitics

He knew it could be horrible or good? How could it possibly be good?

If it wasn't for the fact that thousands are dying as a direct result of his gross incompetence, it would be hilarious to compare his original prevarication with his complaints about the Chinese hiding the extent of the outbreak. Is it because they did it in a foreign language? Same-same. Hard to deny.

Really?? I'm not aware of many/any Trump supporters here who think Covid 19 isn't serious. Trump thought it was serious enough to put in place travel restrictions and national social distancing measures, and last I checked, it's been nearly 2 months since he first started the travel bans. That sorta disproves the veracity of this thread, no??
