US Shipping China Covid 19 Medical Supplies?

And?

China was in need then, now it is shipping medical supplies to countries that need it as well.

I would say it was a good move by Trump.

Also 17.5 tons is likely just 2 truck loads. In the grand scheme of things not a large amount of medical supplies.

I also read that.

From the article:

Concerns about a dwindling supply of PPE are not new. Back on February 7, the World Health Organization sounded alarm bells about "the limited stock of PPE," noting demand was 100 times higher than normal for this equipment.

Yet the same day as the WHO warning, the Trump administration
announced that it was transporting to China nearly 17.8 tons (more than 35,000 pounds) of "masks, gowns, gauze, respirators, and other vital materials." As Secretary of State Mike Pompeo noted in the press release announcing this shipment, "These donations are a testament to the generosity of the American people."

That most likely caused a shortage when the state Governors started trying to buy protective medical equipments for the hospitals in their states.

The industry in the U.S. was set up for a certain capacity for production with perhaps the general ability to produce an extra 20% more. The epidemic has caused demand to sky rocket. Industry in the US does not have the capacity to meet that demand in the short term. Hence the shortage.

It was more symbolic than anything else.....a show of coming to the aid of a nation in need.

Now granted this is The New Chinese Empire, so we can argue if that was a smart move, but let us be clear.....the problem is that through mismanagement we have not in a lot of years had a decent emergency supply of medical stuff.......which was really really stupid.

Its less than one truck load.

Masks and gowns are feathers not lead.

24 pallets to a truck. Two trucks 48 pallets. So 360 kg per pallet. Stacked to 6 feet. For tyvek suits that would be about right. n95 masks at least for industrial use are stacked on top of each other making the space they take up quite small.

I will stand by my estimate of around two truck loads.

What's the volume to weight ratio on respirators and other equipment.

I am in the logistics business. Its less than a truck load. Standard high cube container loads are 40,000 lbs or 20ton. Cube for a standard 53ft length high cube container is 3816 cubic ft. Like I said less than a truck load. The quoted tonnage is 17tons. That would load a truck with 30 pallets of gowns at 909.6lbs a pallet at a total weight of 27,288. On top of those pallets is 30 pallets of masks at 5600lbs almost cubing the container out.

Its one. One high cube container to be exact. Gowns would be in the 900lbs per pallet range while the masks are quoted in the range of 5-8lbs a case 32 cases to a pallet with average pallet weight quoted to be around 186lbs. The gowns would also take the most volume with them taking 48x40x96 inches per pallet. The masks will take less room height wise. its 32cases to a pallet 16 cases to a stack so about 20inches.

I love when you talk math.
