Rent strike idea gaining steam during coronavirus crisis

Rent strike idea gaining steam during coronavirus crisis

ST. LOUIS (AP) — With millions of people suddenly out of work and rent due at the first of the month, some tenants are vowing to go on a rent strike until the coronavirus pandemic subsides.

New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and St. Louis are among many cities that have temporarily banned evictions, but advocates for the strike are demanding that rent payments be waived, not delayed, for those in need during the crisis. The rent strike idea has taken root in parts of North America and as far away as London.

Great idea. The capitalists should share in the general suffering until this thing runs its course.
Landlords and apartment building owners have bills to pay also.
If you don’t pay rent, then eviction.

Excellent idea because then they can raise the rent before the next tenants move in to replace them.

People are rather silly if they think the cops are going to show up to evict people during a crisis where we want people to shelter in place.

While a crisis doesn't mean you suspend the rights of people and the rules in general, it does mean you have to focus and prioritize what you enforce and care about in order of importance.

You want to evict people over a couple of months rent during a crisis? Have fun with the judges you'll be talking to.

If I was a landlord, I would take what I could get in these times. When the economy comes back, the renters are going to have to pay the full rent.

Anyone who would use this event to refuse to pay anything is a piece of ****.

Here's a story I just heard so I can't provide a link- in the town near me a guy came home from a long week-end and found two guys had broken into his vacant basement suite. He calls the cops, they show up and the two guys claim they've been living there for months and the owner is just trying to evict them. Cops say it's a matter for the Residential Tenancy Branch and leave. The Residential Tenancy Branch is putting eviction cases on hold for the time being so now the guy has two freeloaders in his basement that he can't get rid of.

In the states the land owner could just shoot their asses. Maybe y'all need some different laws?

If government chooses not to protect my rights then I guess I'll have to protect them myself. I also guess that I can stop paying taxes because government is no longer providing me any benefit. I figure that's a pretty fair trade.

Speaking of that, I had my CPA all stressed out today when I told her I was going to tell the IRS to **** goat for my 2018 taxes, because of the outbreak...lol

tough situation. not many landlords can be expected to eat a couple months of rent. conversely, a lot of newly evicted homeless would have lots of time to say **** it and resort to crime for supplies, and some of them will probably be armed and really pissed off. not to mention that homeless camps would breed this virus like gasoline. i don't like this movie, especially since it isn't one.

Remingtons don’t need judges.

CA has a statewide moratorium on evictions of tenants who are suffering the economic effects of the virus. They must provide proof of said hardship. The moratorium ends on 5/31, I believe.

A lot of landords aren't big companies that own many rental units. Some have to pay a mortgage on their rental property and need that rent to pay that mortgage.

This is just another whiny attempt to take advantage of a bad situation. Pay your rent, whiny bitches or suffer the consequences when this is all over.

If nobody that's supposed to be enforcing the law is around to do so then it would sure suck for the squatters when that basement flooded.

Yeah well, good luck with that. Hopefully you don't run into anyone ready to fight back while you try to evict someone during an emergency that needs people to stay where they are.

Shouldn't a lot of these people be receiving unemployment? Whatever they are eligible for and an additional $600 a week? And they are receiving a stimulus check. So let me get this straight. They want their entire rent waived? Not a reduction, but fully waived.

If these people are that destitute, they need to move back in mommy and daddy's basement.
I think it is more of a timing thing, not everyone keeps 3 or more months of reserve funds,
While some people may have suspected we would be here at the end of February, most did not.
It takes about 3 weeks to start unemployment, longer now with the excess of people.
The stimulus checks are 3 weeks out still, but most rents and mortgage payments are due tomorrow.

In the UK the government has ordered a three month rent vacation and landlords cannot evict anyone during that period for no-fault rent arrears.

Do their landlords get their mortgages delayed? What happens to the lenders if enough peoples' mortgages are delayed that they begin to buckle, possibly failing?

I don't claim to have all the answers, but it isn't as simple as somehow legislatively suspending rent, assuming it would be constitutional.

If people "rent strike", they're looking at potential eviction.

In Britain mortgage vacations have been put in place (including for landlords), and the government has ordered that no evictions for no-fault can take place for at least three months. This is entirely the correct course of action; the government ordered a total lockdown for anyone but essential workers, thus the responsibility rests with them, not the rent payers.

This sounds like a fake story to me. There was no sign of break in? This guy is really gonna just live with these strangers until this gets resolved? I would expedite the situation and shoot them.

It's a great idea for you people. You get more free stuff for doing nothing. My service level as your renter is gonna go down in the future and I'm probably gonna slash your tires.

I agree, if the guys were tenants, they would have some sort of lease agreement.
I have stayed in AirBNBs in many places in the US and Europe, and everyone had some sort of limited lease agreement.

What's a "rent vacation?"

Many people who can't pay April now will never be able to pay it.

Same for May.

Is a vacation a (meaningless) delay, or rent forgiveness?

It's only correct if lenders are protected from going under as a result. Blow up the financial system to help renters, and you still hurt renters in the end. Ditto mortgagees. Ditto all of us.

What do you think it means? Simply put people are being excused mortgage payments, interest on loans etc. because of the government's lockdown strategy, preventing them working through no fault of their own. This is fair.

Thats not fair. I own property with no mortgages so to give renters a hand but not owners is despicable and not the American way.

You haven't answered the question.

Is it a meaningless delay, or is it forgiveness?

A delay means riots are just being put off for a bit; forgiveness means an ongoing cohesive society.

Capiche?

EVERYTHING must be forgiven across the board, including rent and mortgage, but if you have no obligations to be forgiven, count yourself among the fortunate few.
